It’s one of the most anticipated national finals of the season. And on Monday Swedish broadcaster SVT will keep the hype going as it reveals the running order of the Melodifestivalen 2017 semi-finals. The news will give fans more clues as to who the hottest acts — and potential winners — of the contest will be.

In what’s becoming an annual tradition, SVT will present the running order via a live stream. Show host Clara Henry will introduce the event, with Melfest boss Christer Björkman presenting the line-ups.

The pair will reveal the news live on the Melodifestivalen Facebook page, Monday 9 January at 13:00 CET.

The Melfest sticky note system

In previous years, the line-up has been revealed using the Melfest sticky note system. Songs are colour-coded according to genre, with asterisks denoting songs with Swedish lyrics and/or female writers.

The entries are then carefully arranged to ensure each of the four shows has a good blend of styles, and that each episode will provide a good night’s entertainment.

Melfest 2016 winner Frans performed fifth in his semi-final

The songs in closing position are thought to give clues to the year’s favourites. The last slot in each show is usually given to the strongest song of the evening, one considered likely to qualify direkt till final — if not win Melfest outright.

While the closing position is often given to established acts, that isn’t a guarantee. Last year newcomer Wiktoria closed her semi-final and went on to placed fourth in the grand final.

But running order isn’t everything. Melfest 2016 winner Frans performed fifth in his semi-final, and surprised some by significantly outperforming closing act and expected heat winner Molly Sandén.

Melodifestivalen 2017 begins in less than one month. The first semi-final starts on 4 February on Gothenburg. We’ll have full coverage.

@Purple Mas?:
Suprised you read all of this, I don’t know if I would read such a long comment. Nevertheless, sometimes you need more space in order to fully express your opinion. Thanks BTW.
@D: Thanks for the answer. Swedish Finn you mean she’s a swedish speaking Finnish, if I am correct. Though, can she participate with both countries?

(J)ESC Fanatic

2012 Thorsten Flinck & Revolutionsorkestern 9 of 10 with international juries , and 3 od 10 in televote

2015 Hasse Andersson 11 and 12 place of 12 with intenational juries, and 3 place with televote.

Who had no good taste in music, juries or televote. We see like at Eurovision that juries push so hard some singers and song at MF and some countries at Eurovsion, whatever they sang . I think if Mans in 2015 sang Hasse song that he would be in TOP 3 with juries and TOP 2 with televote.

I don’t see why international juries would not like songs with Swedish lyrics. I guess it’s just a coincidence and people make a whole fuss out of it.

With international juries song in swedish don t have chsnce for win. See in past, many was in bottom 3 with international juries and on top 5 with swedish televote

The Fooo Conspiracy is favorite for win, thanks to televote, only if juries put them down like Yohio they will be second, theymust be in top 5 of 12 with juries infinal and they will win.

You beat me to it. The odds-on favorites will close out every round, like they did in 2015. If not, they’ll certainly sing next-to-last, with the 2nd-favorite in that round closing it out. Anyone who thinks neither Loreen nor Ace will close out their rounds hasn’t been paying attention.

Who will close each semi final? Haha good question! It’s Sweden my friends…. :
1. Ace Wilder 99,9%
2. Mariette 99,9%
3. The Fooo Conspiracy 99,9%
4. Loreen 100000000%

Loreen had a fantastic album after Eurovision. Find some songs like “In my head” and you will see she has much more in her portfolio.

Year after year the same people at Melodifestivalen. And they had like 2000 entries applied for the competition?!

It is so clear that Loreen will not win. She competes again after 4 years, having in her portfolio only Euphoria. That says it all.

First of all, while excited for this Melfest, really hope they don’t pander to Loreen by giving her the final spot…give it to a Swedish language act like J-H Fjallgren-Aninia (one of my favs)….she’s had her day in the sun, as has Perelli. But, as we saw last year, final spot in a semi or final doesn’t guarantee the top spot! Very excited to hear the song snippets from SVT!! Bring it on! 🙂

Everyone thought Molly would win last year and she didn’t even make top 5. I feel like it’ll be hard for Loreen to win, since everyone has such high expectations for her and I feel that if people even feel like her song is slightly worse than Euphoria, they’ll support someone else. I’m still super excited to see her back though, although, I’d rather see someone like Ace represent Sweden this year who’s been trying really hard and who came really close twice already

Pretty sure we all know Loreen will close her semi . I was really hoping for Wiktoria to represent but it’s obvious now that Loreen will win. The chance of Loreen not winning melfest is the same as the chance of Helena Paparizou not winning the Cypriot or Greek selections. so basically zero. sigh….

Does anyone know when the songs will be released? I’m looking forward to Ace and Loreen

@ AngieP – Krista is a Swedish Finn. There are many ethnic Swedes living in Finland, because Finland used to be a part of Sweden many years ago. They continue to speak Swedish as their first language and while they have assimilated into Finnish society fairly well, it’s still quite easy to point out a Swedish Finn from a Finnish Finn.

@AngieP: Because Krista Siegfrieds is just THAT AWESOME! 🙂
I like your comments by the way – quite a good preview analysis there.

I feel like with Loreen at MelFest it’ll be a runaway winner 🙁

I’m personally hoping for Wiktoria to close a show.

I think this might be Ace’s year if Loreen flops (which she won’t).

Some more comments here:
I think Sweden will choose an English song, so Swedish songs haven’t a big chance to win. I’m sure we’ll see Swedish songs in the final, though!
I expect the best from Melfest as always! May the best song win! Really looking forward to listening to the songs!

Question: I remember Krista representing Finland in 2013. How can she compete in a swedish national selection as MelFest?
If anyone here can give me an answer I’ll appreciate it.

Though I am not familiar with some artists but love Melfest I’ll say my opinion. 1st semi: Charlotte Perrelli: I liked both her entries at ESC, but I don’t think she’ll win, unless she has THE song! That’s because she has already represented Sweden twice, she doesn’t need a third time. For me, it’s a bit boring to see her again. There are such good artists who have never gone to ESC. Ace Wilder: I’ve seen her performances at MelFest, I was not excited by her songs but I like her voice. Shouldn’t she go to ESC some time? I’d… Read more »

Why Swedish lyrics + female writers must have asterisks ?

Anyone else noticed in the picture above from Melfest’s instagram, the title of Eclipse’s song and Swingfly’s song is different from their *actual* titles?

I hope not the rap-songs will get the dreaded 2nd spot…as usual!

MF can be very predictable.

I hope for good draws for Dismissed and Les gordons 🙂

Won’t surprise me if Loreen is the last singer in the last semi 🙂 Usually the favourites (among SVT, not necessarily the BEST songs) come last in their semis.
