He played with fire in 2010 and made us believe in miracles in 2014. Now, Ovidiu Jacobsen, aka Ovi, is hinting at a possible comeback in this year’s Eurovision. However, it might not be for Romania or Norway — the two countries he considers home — but for Spain.

On Saturday Ovi shared a photo on his Facebook page with a Spanish producer named Isaac Luque. He’s quite explicit about his intentions, writing: “No year without ESC. Not exactly Barcelona weather in Bucharest for my Spanish friend, but music keeps us warm.”

He also used the hashtag #escspain. This left us thinking: is he behind one of the prequalified songs for Spain’s national selection? Or is he preparing for Romania’s Selectia Nationala? Let’s dive into the uncertainty a bit…

Spain is hosting a national selection in February, with the winner of the internet Eurocasting phase competing against a number of other established artists directly picked by RTVE. This means that Ovi and Isaac may be writing for another artist or for Isaac himself, as Ovi is ineligible to take part: Spain requires contestants to hold Spanish nationality or to have lived in the country for at least two years to take part.

Elsewhere, Romania is keeping its submission period open until January 22. Still, the #escspain hashtag is confusing. In the past Ovi has entered Norway and Romania’s national selection and was behind Belgium’s 2014 runner-up 2 Fabiola and their song “She’s after my piano”. Moreover, Ovi was in the promotional advert for Romania’s selection:

Who is Isaac Luque?

If the hashtag actually refers to Spain’s national selection, then Ovi’s musical partner Isaac Luque should be the one taking part (or perhaps they are working with another Spanish singer). Isaac may not be in the spotlight in Spain, but some of his songs have had an impact.

He has written for Operación Triunfo stars like David Bustamante, Lorena Gómez and David Bisbal. His most well-known composition is “Miénteme” by Bisbal and Elena Gadel.

David Bisbal & Elena Gadel – “Miénteme”

Since Operación Triunfo came to an end, his best known hit is a version of the popular “Paquito el chocolatero”. Sigh.

King Africa – “Paquito el chocolatero”

He doesn’t only write. He’s also a singer performing under the name Isaak. Here’s some more of his art…

Will we see Ovi and Isaac in any national selection this year? Are you excited about the Romanian artist’s potential return? Tell us in the comment section below!

Ovi’s just ‘playing with fire’ when using those hashtags. He knows it will be a ‘miracle’ if Spain chooses his song. Ha ha ha.
Happy New Year. 😀

The Spanish selection process should give more weight to the international juries. The Spanish in-studio voters and the televoters have not had the best of luck predicting what resonates with the people of Europe.
Again, slightly important if you intend to do well at Eurovision!

I understand that until now only the jury said their opinion, so the fans did not lost any money to vote. It is all about wild card, an open door for public favourite, or just a way to play with artist’s feelings. I’m a fan of Javian and if Spain will decide oterwise, it is fine.

Maybe you are right, I just don’t understand why a country pretend to have a national selection, when in the end will be an internal selection. This is the biggest lie in ESC. Some countries accept that, while in others would be a big scandal.

I’m pretty sure that Spain isn’t at their last three songs. One of those three songs are going to end up being a wildcard in a final that’s gonna happen after one of them gets chosen. I think Ovi’s trying to compose a song for someone that got internally chosen in the final.

Agreed with the “too many Swedish composers” comment. I don’t have a problem if they do the producing or final remixing (i.e. Georgia 2015, 2016) or co-writing with local composers, but I’d love to see more local composers entering songs to the selections.

On the other hand, when you don’t have a country to represent, then everywhere is fair game.

I like that he is interested in ESC. His quote ”No year without ESC” sounds good to me. I just don’t understand how he can help Spain if they are already at the last 3 : Javian, LeKlein and Fruela. Anyway is always good when writers make music, and call me hateful, but I’m tired of Sweden being everywhere, so good to see that another nation is still wanted and allowed.

Now that Romania’s out and Norway wasn’t that kind to him in 2009, looks like he’s writing for any country that’s willing to take him.

Not really sure about him writing a song for Objetivo Eurovisión, but since I liked both of his songs and performances from Dusseldorf and Copenhagen, he might be able to compose something of good quality.

Ovi…and Paula have to one of my favourite duos from recent years. Nice to see he’ll be back in one form or another!

He’s writing a song for a male artist? No way he’s gonna win then, not in Spain.
