javian no somos héroes

Last night, the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of musical unprofessionals — gathered in Sevilla, the capital of Andalusia, and one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. While dressing up for La Feria and enjoying our fresh rebujitos, we reviewed Javián’s entry for Objetivo Eurovisión, “No somos héroes”. Was Javián our hero or was he more of a villain?

Javián – “No somos héroes”

About Javián

Javián was one of the contestants of the first edition of the talent show Operación Triunfo. He was evicted in the first weeks, but then gained fame as a part of popular group Fórmula Abierta. He has a rocker soul, but he can take anything, from Latin beats to the country vibe of his entry “No somos héroes” (We are not heroes).

Wiwi Jury reviews “No somos héroes”

Bernardo: Javián channels major barnyard realness. Bring the cows, bring the horses — because “No somos héroes” will get you dancing like an animal. This is probably, until today, the most fun song in national final season across Europe. The Spanish lyrics are the essence here and I’m loving it.

Score: 8/10

Deban: Javián exudes a relatable quality that spans all ages. This is an asset when trying to court a wide demographic of listeners. Furthermore, this track is so sing-a-long, yet undeniably Spanish in flavour. The fact it’s a tad familiar in presentation may be its downfall, but also its strength.

Score: 6.5/10

Jason: “No somos héroes” serves up some Spanish country music realness, and I must admit, I’m not mad at it. It wasn’t what I expected it to be, and it caught me off guard with its cheeriness. In a year which will (probably) see many dark and twisty Jamala-inspired entries, the light and joy of Javián and this catchy track can only work to Spain’s advantage.

Score: 7.5/10

Jordi: Knowing Javián from Operacion Triunfo, I wasn’t expecting this type of song. But I really loved it! It definitely has that Spanish essence which I think many fans want to hear from a Spanish entry. It’s fun, catchy and provides a varied mixture of sounds: from country music to Gaelic tones adding some Álvaro Soler vibes. However, I’m concerned about how he’s going to deliver. He’s all about rock, and this song is all about pop.

Score: 7.5/10

Jovana: “No somos héroes” has a radio-friendly, non-Eurovision sound — but that’s its biggest weakness. This is not a typical ESC track and therefore fans might not appreciate it enough. But it’s still a decent song and I can see it doing either really well or really badly in Kyiv. It reminds me of France 2016’s entry “J’ai cherché” and of Álvaro Soler’s hit “Sofia” – but both of those songs did well with audiences. I like “No somos héroes”. I’m not crazy about it, but I can imagine myself dancing to it and singing to it while driving. An extra half point goes for singing in Spanish.

Score: 8.5/10

Luis: There are so many positive things about this song that I’m still surprised this is placed in the pre-qualifying round. Actually, “No somos héroes” could perfectly represent Spain this year. It’s fun, catchy, fresh and instantly likeable. That said, I have some major reservations as of now. First, the song is a bit plain. It’s hidden behind the catchy chorus and the happy-clappy feel, but the climax of the song is a bit underwhelming. Also, I’ve said it in our videos, I’m not completely sold on Javián as a performer. I really want him to prove me wrong though.

Score: 7.5/10

Robyn: I love the contrast between edgy black-clad rock singer Javián and his upbeat, inspirational song. “No somos héroes” is ridiculously catchy and fun to listen to and it always puts a smile on my face. But most importantly: it sounds Spanish! This is Spain playing to their strengths and a song like this would not do poorly in Kyiv.

Score: 8/10

William: Javián makes me want to grab a tambourine and ride a bull — this is very Spanish hoe-down. And with that comes thrusting traditional sounds feel-good fiddle plucking and plenty of foot-tapping, high-energy realness. On the one hand the song sounds cliché and Lucia Perez 2011. On the other hand it’s authentic and inspirational. If we vote on positivity this wins the day. But if we want a song that could slay at Eurovision, I’m afraid it’s only my runner-up.

Score: 7.5/10

I see a couple of comments about Javian’s song being a happy song, it makes you dance! Even I made such a comment. But I just thought that there was the same feeling about Spain with ” Say yay” and we all saw what happened at the end of the day, Nevertheless, the Spanish mood of the song makes it different and it can really stand well at ESC.

If Spain will send LeKlein I really hope that EBU will start allowing negative points : -1, -2, -3, -4, etc. LeKlein is so bad.

You must understand that Spain is a country that did everything and they don’t know what to do anymore. Send Placido Domingo ?
If were up to me I would say : Tamara Valcarcel.

I actually find it quite cheap…

Good toe tapping rhythm, although the entire thing feels a bit sloppy and incomplete. Not horrible by any stretch of the imagination, but you gotta think there’s something better to offer from a country like Spain.

Of the three remaining wildcards, this is my favorite.

BY FAR the best of the three. I disagree a bit with the “sounds/not sounds Eurovision-y” since the contest is all about weird genres and variety. This Soler-guitar-uppity song is something that is trending nowadays, and is something Spain has yet to send. It’s a bit messy in the chorus and may drag, but you can’t deny its catchiness.

7.5/10 and the OBIVOUS wildcard choice.

IMO Javian is the best out of the three songs for me. This is the only one that makes me feel contented or happy when I hear it and I love the fact that his song contains Spanish lyrics, because a lot of countries in Eurovision nowadays seem to use English more rather than their own language. In addition, his chorus doesn’t sound as annoying as “Ouch”‘s chorus or “Live It Up”‘s chorus. Both of the choruses from Ouch and Live It Up are a bit annoying, so this stands out a bit more for me.

Sounds like something you would hear at On The Border.
Without bottomless chips and salsa, I don’t know if it is as enjoyable. It sounds more like background music rather than something to entirely focus on for three minutes.
It would get murdered in Kyiv but I don’t dislike it.

Like this song a lot. It’s a happy song, with a good message. It has something Spanish, it is different.

It’s a nice happy-clappy song with a good message, but I honestly struggle to find something special in it. It does stand out because it sounds quite Spanish, so it could do well at Eurovision, but I still think Spain can do better.

Such an overrated entry. I liked it until the chorus. It sounded cheesy.

I will vote for LeKlein because of the production and the voice. The crowd won’t vote for Spain anyway… We have to find the right song for the jury.

Thanks, Wiwibloggers! His score is well-deserved! Slight edge over LeKlein. Agree with most of the above comments. With a few tweaks and appropriate staging which is not overdone, this genre could do well in Kyiv. Definitely won’t be forgotten. It’s insanely likeable and makes you move! It has no annoying chorus line (ex: “OUCH”), and doesn’t sound so generic as “Live it Up”. In the end, it’s the best of the three, and should move on to the final. Spain, send a SPANISH song this year, I beg you! 🙂 Good luck, Javian!
