It’s the country that qualified for the grand final for the very first time in 2016. Now the Czech Republic is one step closer to selecting its act for Eurovision 2017. Ceska Televize has shortlisted five songs it is considering for Kyiv.

Late last year, the broadcaster held an open submission period where they received more than 300 songs. Escportal.cz reports that from that 300, a shortlist of five songs has been selected.

As the process is an internal selection, the broadcaster has not revealed any details of the five artists or their songs. Ceska Televize’s selection panel will later decide which of the five will get the ticket to Kyiv. The decision is expected to be made in late January or early February, and announced some time after.

Last year Ceska Televize considered only three bids in the end. Some have speculated this indicates the broadcaster was working to higher standards than in previous years. Will this new system again see the Czech Republic in the grand final of Eurovision?

Czech head of press Martin Broz says they were looking for suitable artists to enter into talks with. This might sound alarming for fans of Mikolas Josef, who was ready to go with a complete package. However, there is nothing to suggest he is not one of the five shortlisted acts.

There are numerous other talented Czech artists ready to jump on the Eurovision train, like Thom Artway, Dasha or Light & Love — three artists that were rumoured last year. If that’s not enough you can always check out our Czech Eurovision wishlist here.

I really hope for the best this year by Czech Republic! They did a great come back in 2016 where they managed to qualify for the first time in its history to the final! I was so glad! And what a wonderful song! So, make a good choice Czech Republic!

I am Czech and I hate name Czechia, it’s always been and always will be Czech Republic either you like it or not 😀 A lot of people in here didn’t want to change our official name in English to Czechia, but our stupid government did.
Anyway, I hope that ?eská televize will choose song which will be good enough to qualify into final again, maybe it would finally made Slovaks change their mind and participate again, in my opinion their music is better than ours.

What does everyone keep discussing Czech Republic vs Czechia issue under every single article about this country on Wiwiblogs?

@an esc fan There have always been Czech Republic (?eská republika) and Slovak Republic (Slovenská republika), even in the times of Czechoslovakia. Slovakia had its one-word name (Slovensko) used by every Slovak, meanwhile the Czech Republic didn’t have an one-word name that would every Czech use – some Czechs call it ?esko, others ?echy (which is not right, because ?echy is just one of the three parts of the republic) and part of the Czechs don’t use neither like any short name. Not all the Czechs like the word Czechia, some would prefer Czechland, Czechlands or Bohemia. So, it is… Read more »

My country would never use Czechia (Cechia). It’ll always be Repubblica Ceca for us, lmao. Even Czechia sounds odd.

It would be nice if they had an NF. They did in 2007 and 08. And esp 2007 was brilliant I think. Sadly – for me the story of Czech Rep / Czechia in ESC has been a bit so for me….started brilliantly, then just fell down….Kabat is a great legendary metal band at their market. For many decades. Maybe a mixof Black Sabbath and Rolling Stones. The song was a masterpiece of melodic metal (regardless of the unfair result, thankfullly Lordi won with hard rock the year nefore though!) After that, their entries have been average at best forme.… Read more »

I hope they will decide for Czechia, because in my opinion, is the real name, and this is how they are called in so many languages (maybe all except english).
The name ”Czech Republic” exist because they wanted something as different as possible from ”Czechoslovakia”, but now is time to stop this.

I’ve asked the Czech broadcaster CT, and they said that they will make a decision (wether they would call themselfs the “Czech Republic” or “Czechia) at the same time as they reveal their artist.

I think that most languages have Czechia, but as Gabriela Guncikova said, Czechia is not wrong, but that they prefer the word Republic to be next, to be sure that people will not be tempted to say Czechoslovakia.

Czech Republic is always the country that I want to do well. Then the contest happens, and it’s like a black hole just swallows their act up for no reason. 🙁 So this year they must choose people tough enough to survive such phenomena. Humour aside, I don’t think that the Czech Republic acts thus far have been “visible” enough, either with the music, the presentation (live staging) or the PR. I’m not suggesting they need an overly visible act, but perhaps they need an act that would remind the rest of Europe why they should be loving the Czech… Read more »

Now that they qualified for the first time last year, I hope they take the contest more seriously. Anyways, not sure who I want, so I’m crossing my fingers for another great entry from the Czech Republic.

They’re one of the countries that could afford to host, so they better get to work. It amazes me how a country like the Czech Republic has flopped so hard so far.
