Maika Manel Navarro

The Eurocasting in Spain is finally coming to an end. On Thursday, either Fruela, Javián or Leklein will win the preliminary phase of Spain’s national selection, and will go on to compete against a number of undisclosed artists in the Objetivo Eurovision final, which is scheduled for February.

Back in December, several artists emerged as rumoured candidates who had been handpicked by RTVE — namely Rafa Blas, Mirela, Paula Rojo and Mario Jefferson. Now, two days ahead of the official announcement, there are two more names in the rumour mill: Maika Barbero and Manel Navarro.

Maika Barbero

Maika may be familiar to you. Last year, she tried her luck in Switzerland’s selection with her song “The Reason” — and topped our Wiwi Poll. She had previously competed on The Voice of Spain and another talent show called Levántate All Stars (where Ruth Lorenzo was a part of the judging panel).

Known for her gravelly voice, Maika’s career hasn’t really taken flight in Spain. Following The Voice, where she finished third, Maika has released two singles, including “En Tus Manos”, which had moderate success.

Manel Navarro

Manel, the other rumoured artist, is a 20-year-old singer from Barcelona. In 2016, he released his first single “Candle”. The song got some attention, especially in the Catalan radio stations.

Three years ago, he won the contest Teen Star in Catalonia and released his single “Brand New Day”. On his YouTube channel, he has uploaded cover versions of Drake, Ed Sheeran and 5 Seconds of Summer.

Line-up revealed at Eurocasting

The line-up of Objetivo Eurovisión will finally be revealed on Thursday during the Eurocasting show. As of now, no names are confirmed. Will any of the rumoured names be on the list? And will Romania’s Ovi take part? We’ll have to wait and see.

In any case, what do you think of Maika and Manel? Do you think either of them have a chance of representing Spain at Eurovision? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

I’m not sure exactly why but this blog is loading extremely slow for me. Is anyone else having this problem or is it a issue on my end? I’ll check back later on and see if the problem still exists.

@ Alex from Spain
I know that spanish citizens are not racists, I was thinking about the jury who is very traditional, and about the head of delegation that Barei complained about last year, do you still have him ?

@ Robyn Gallagher
I’d sabotage nothing, but ”conflict of interest” is a legal term, maybe I was thinking too technical.

@an esc fan Language is a really big deal in Spain. Half of the people are opposed to singing in English at Eurovision. But nobody gives a fck about skin colour, it’s just that the song wasn’t good enough.

Am I wrong if I say that the elephant in the room here is that Brequette is black?
I know that Spain accepted very hard to send Barei with english lyrics, maybe now english lyrics + black person is too much for Spain.

@Mark
It’s the partial selection for the actual selection. Basically: a waste of time.

Wait! So what have we doing all this time? Brequette wasn’t good enough to be in the real selection?

I just don’t understand the rules of Objectivo Eurovision, but I guess that as long as viewers are not spending money on televote, only the jury to reverse everything later, it is fine.
Also I don’t understand the international jury. Do you think that international jury wants your country to do well ?
Another situation is Azerbaijan : they choose DiHaj (I know, 3 members : Diana + husband and friend), I wonder if Jamala style and genre winning last year, had any influence over choosing DiHaj. Azerbaijan always wanting it the most.
Just saying random things.
