Folk music, a Sia cover, spray-on leggings — this week’s episode of Israel’s The Next Star for Eurovision 2017 did not disappoint. Another five artists managed to pass their audition as they continue their quest to sing for Israel at Eurovision. The audition phase ends next week and we’ll then move on to the next segment of shows, ahead of the February 13 final. Things are changing fast and you need to watch this roller coaster.

 WEEK 3 QUALIFIERS

The Alaev Family
Accordions, tambourines, traditional costumes and major self-belief — the Alaev Family own the Bukharan folk music genre. Consisting of three generations of a single family, the group includes a charming 85-year-old who hasn’t slowed with age. Hardcore Eurovision fans might remember them from Kdam — the Israeli national selection back in 2005. The Eurovision dream remains on their mind. Do you think they can make it?

Audition score: 77% (votes from three judges)

Michal Shapira
Michal brought smoky vocals, power, drama and just the right amount of cleavage to her theatrical performance of Sia’s “Chandelier”. She didn’t just swing from it — she tore it off the ceiling. An actress and singer, she included a very long pause for dramatic effect — and it worked. She impressed the audience and most of the judges.

Audition score: 76% (votes from three judges)

Chen Maximov
She’s a shy girl who dreams of becoming a singer — even if her friends have repeatedly told her she doesn’t stand a chance. But the Eurovision dream has compelled her to give the show a try and, despite some obvious nerves, she pushed through. When Harel Skaat saw her he immediately thought of Kylie Jenner, while some of us saw Voice of Russia star Aminata. Either way, she’s made it through. Can’t dim her light!

Audition score: 80% (votes from three judges)

Beta Zinq
Young, cool and trendy, this group captured the judges’ attention partly because of the lead singer’s spray-on leggings, which appeared to be painted on her gym-honed legs. But there was substance beyond the look as they have a unique, experimental sound that seems to mix electronica, dubstep and pop. Some of the judges weren’t convinced that their sound will translate to the Eurovision stage. What do you think?

Audition score: 77% (votes from three judges)

Ron Buhbut
When you’re trying to become a successful singer, having a sister that is a already a star isn’t so easy. Just ask Solange Knowles. But Ron is determined to make it on his own and rise above the shadow cast by his sister, Agam. She’s only 13 years old, but she’s already a famous singer in Israel. Since winning a kids’ talent show on Israeli TV a few years ago, she’s released a couple of hits and her debut album will drop soon. This family is truly blessed with good genes, as Ron also has a beautiful voice that helped him pass the audition with the highest score of this week’s episode.

Audition score: 82% (votes from three judges)

Check the account name on DM and you’ll likely see upcoming episodes shortly after they’re aired on Mako.

@mawnck
Since Mako is an Israeli television company, those not living in Israel cannot stream the channel without paying a monthly fee.. It’s so upsetting!! At least they post the relevant performances for free….

OK, I’m probably a moron, but when I click on the complete episodes link and then try to select an episode, I get what appears to be a request for money, and I can’t figure out any way around it. (I can’t read Hebrew, shocking though that may be.) Can someone please help a guy out here?
