Over the past month, the Bulgarian broadcaster BNT has been running an open submission for their Eurovision 2017 entry. Now the broadcaster has compiled a shortlist of six — and their always active Twitter account has been dropping plenty of hints.
BNT were looking for well established acts to partner with the broadcaster for their Eurovision entry. They weren’t just looking for songs — interested entrants needed to provide staging concepts and artistic ideas as well.
After the 20 January deadline, the broadcaster had received a total of 10 submissions. From that, they have now made a shortlist of six that will be assessed by an international focus group.
BNT says they can’t reveal any names at this stage, but they have been sharing information and dropping plenty of hints. They revealed that there’s an even gender split between the six acts: three women and three men. And we can expect the successful song to have English lyrics.
Hints to potential song titles came in the form of a word cloud made up of all words in the shortlisted titles. “Ride your mess”, perhaps?

And big hints were dropped about each song. @bg_eurovision described each song using keywords.
They also promised that “Almost all the songs fit in the current trends. The ones who doesn’t are extremely catchy.”

Next the songs will be assessed by the panel, which has been selected to represent typical Eurovision viewers. They’ll be working online and won’t know each other. Panelists will consider their initial reaction to the song, the potential for a revamp, the potential for Eurovision staging, and the personality of the performer.
After Bulgaria’s triumphant comeback in 2016 and Poli Genova’s fourth-place finish, it seems Bulgaria is even more determined to bring home a good result from Kyiv. And after successfully hosting Junior Eurovision in 2015, Bulgaria seem ready, willing and able to host the big one.
The broadcaster aims to announce the successful entry in mid-February, but it may be earlier if things get sorted out faster.
What do you think? Do any of the song descriptions sound like a hit? Is Bulgaria on the right track? Sound off below!
From this cloud I’ve instantly got “One of Kind”. But from all those entries I’d like to know more about the song #4. 🙂
Hints? We might as well use a crystal ball at this point to better imagine the songs. 😀
I would love it if Bulgaria did well again this year though.
okay wow i don’t know what happened to that comment but ! ! ! lets get those #1 / #6 party songs out ! ! !
<<>>
Number 4 – rock please! And any group/band!!!
I’m sorry for sounding childish now, but I still can’t unsee “memes” as part of the word cloud of song titles.
I’m glad to see that they seem to be taking it seriously this year.
I really hope Gery-Nikol is one of the participants!
Lets hope that they will not be another 9 years on the semi finals as it happened before. it seems that they take it very seriously
By the description, song 4 looks most promissing. They have had some great rock songs in their past NFs
I was so glad when Bulgaria finished 4th last year, I hope it wasn’t just an one-off.
So the only #3 carries the meaningful realness. Thanks for roasting me so far if I would stick to any other numero 😀
Let’s see for that club-banger coming.
uhh 10 submissions only? oh well quality is better than quantity.
from the descriptions… i think i’ll enjoy song #1 (club banger), #4 (traditional-tinged rock) and #6 (summer pop).
