Kaliopi Rodjendan FYR Macedonia

She is one of FYR Macedonia’s most successful artists. She’s a two-time Eurovision star who rocked her way to the grand final in 2012, only to narrowly miss out on qualification upon her return last May.

Most recently, Kaliopi has been working on new music, dropping “Rodjendan” just after Christmas.

In November, Kaliopi proved that she’s doing just fine outside the Eurovision bubble with the release of the edgy rock song “Kesteni”.

The rock vibes continue on “Rodjendan”, which translates as “Birthday”. As with so much of her back catalogue, the track is a powerful anthem.

The song kicks of with Kaliopi rotating and singing over a simple guitar and percussion beat. Then the chorus comes and everything goes mad — guitar, bass and drums combine with the Balkan diva’s flawless vocals.

The result is impeccable. And when you think it can’t get better, it does. The bridge comes and Kaliopi does her “Crno i Belo” high note.

The accompanying video is quite mysterious and dark, with lots of black and white effects and special lighting. Kalopi might be a music veteran, but she’s well able to keep up with any young rivals.

She and her band move to the rhythm effortlessly, while a couple of dancers join them to give the video an ethereal touch.

The song is yet another Romeo Grill collaboration. And the diva and her ex-husband have done good once again.

The unexpected result in Stockholm certainly isn’t holding our favourite doughnut loving singer back.
