Loucas Yiorkas - Den Pao Sti Douleia 2017

He finished a very respectable seventh while representing Greece at Eurovision 2011 in Düsseldorf. And now Loucas Yiorkas is reminding us why he did so well, with the release of his new single “Den Pao Sti Douleia”.

Translating as “I Won’t Leave”, it’s a steaming hot ethnic dance number, sung entirely in Greek.

“Den Pao Sti Douleia”starts off slow, with a strong ethnic beat and Loucas’ signature sound. But by the chorus he’s mixing in modern pop and traditional Greek folk.

The track tells the story of a young man who is so head over heels in love with his woman that he refuses to leave her side. Not even to go to work, because she has mended his broken heart.  Attachment at its finest?

The Mediterranean heartthrob, who was born in Cyprus, made our heart beat just a little bit faster when we watched him dance in Düsseldorf and has stayed busy ever since.

He still holds a special tie to his native Cypriot/Greek roots.

As we reported late last year, the Cypriot broadcaster CyBC — who went internal for their 2017 selection — allegedly had a shortlist of three potential contestants to represent Cyprus in Kyiv in May.

Loucas was on top of that list, along with Andreas Leontas and Charis Savva.

However, the 2015 Eurovision Song Project finalist, Hovig was chosen to fly the Cypriot flag instead, and we’ll have to wait a while longer for Loucas to make a re-appearance in our beloved contest.

Until then, we can always feast our ears on his music.

Loucas Yiorkas – Den Pao Sti Douleia English Lyrics

What can I say?
I didn’t even know you existed
I believed it when someone said I love you
What can I say?
With your first glance, you saw me.

If you love me, if you kiss me,
you take me to the clouds
I won’t leave
I won’t leave for a minute
I’ll do all the crazy things
you want

I won’t go to work
I won’t go anywhere
I’m bored with all of that
I won’t go to work
If you are in my arms
I’m better every day

What can I say?
You undo words and actions
You’re above everything else
What can I say?
Stay like this, don’t ever change

Yes these things happen
Our dreams that laugh like little children
Now that you´re close
these things happen
Big love happens again
and everything comes undone

So many people back in 2011 were pessimistic about Loukas’ chances. Even Dimitris Kontopoulos was critical of the entry.

“Watch My Dance” was a great stage production. Frankly, the juries were very unfair to it. Not that #7 is a bad position, but it should have done better.

As for Loukas himself, he’s very stiff when he performs. He has a great voice (and he’s easy on the eyes), but he doesn’t look comfortable performing.

“Den Pao Sti Douleia” actually translates to “I won’t go to work.” Sadly Loukas is very underrated in Greece which is a shame. He has such a clear, pleasant voice, especially amazing when he sings laiko songs. Good article Kristin!

He was my favorite in 2011 (unpopular opinion for some reason) and I would love for him to comeback and represent Greece again or even Cyprus. He has a really attractive voice!

Unrelated: Alexey Vorobyov (Alex Sparrow) was cast on Lifetime’s UnReal. Pretty random if you ask me.
