The grand final of Hungary’s A Dal 2017 is this Saturday. But earlier this week, we asked wiwibloggs readers who you would like to see follow Freddie in representing Hungary at Eurovision. Y’all were enchanted by Gabi Tóth and her bewitching “Hosszú idök”.

Gabi Tóth — also known as TOTOVA, who performs as part of Gabi Tóth & Freddie Shuman feat. Begi Lotfi  — was the clear winner. Her song “Hosszú idök” picked up 35.14% of the vote.

In second place was Joci Pápai whose combination of Eastern styles and hip hop on “Origo” saw him pick up just over a quarter of the vote, on 25.85%.

And in third place was Hungary’s 2014 representative, Kállay Saunders. Now part of the Kállay Saunders Band, his 2017 song “17” picked up less than 17% of the vote, only managing 12.04%.

The other five acts didn’t fare well, with the bottom three picking up less than 5% of the vote a piece. In last place was Gina Kanisza, whose jazz ballad “Fall Like Rain” wasn’t a hit with wiwibloggs readers. She only managed 3.66% of the vote, but she does still have at least 56 fans out there.

Readers poll results: Who should win the grand final of Hungary’s A Dal 2017?

  1. Gabi Tóth – “Hosszú idök” 35.14% (537 votes)
  2. Joci Pápai – “Origo” 25.85% (395 votes)
  3. Kállay Saunders Band – “17” 12.04% (184 votes)
  4. Gigi Radics – “See It Through” 8.77% (134 votes)
  5. Soulwave – “Kalandor” 6.74% (103 votes)
  6. Zävodi + Olivér Berkes – “#háttérzaj” 4.45% (68 votes)
  7. Leander Kills – “Élet” 3.66% (56 votes)
  8. Gina Kanizsa – “Fall Like Rain” 3.34% (51 votes)

I’m rooting for Origo. It would stand out more and would be something unique. Hosszu Idok is not moving away enough from last year winner’s style, which is always needed tho. Be brave and choose something distinctive, Hungary!

@ CookyMonzta

– Each semifinal has 2 halves
– Countries can’t change the half they are in
– The running order in each half is not decided yet
– It will be decided after all countries reveal the song, because EBU does not want genres of the songs to be the same in a row
– EBU want to alternate : dance – ballad – summer hit – slow – up tempo – low tempo

My 2 cents on the English language songs: I was unimpressed with Gigi’s song, and I spent some time wondering why. Gigi has a good voice, I usually like ballads and the lyrics are good. So, what is missing? Then it hit me – What’s missing is the emotion! Unlike Lucie Jones from UK or Leena from Finland, Gigi doesn’t seam to be putting any actual emotion into the performance. She tries so hard to sound good and to hit the right notes that she leaves out the most important thing. She might as well be reading the phone book.… Read more »

Really crossing my fingers for Origo. Such a fabulous tune and just what Eurovision needs. What does Eurovision not need? Another over the top over dramatic female singer with a song which has no relevance outside ESC circles. Good luck Joci!

@CookyMonzta – What has been decided of the running order is what semi a song will perform and in which half. For instance, if a semi has 18 songs, it has been decided which will perform 1st-9th place and which 10th-18th place. The exact running order isn’t know and wether the song will perform 4th, 5th or 7th in it’s respective semi half is not yet decided. On Wikipedia the countries in their halves are sorted out in alphabetical order until the exact order is known.

@(J)ESC, Robin: I thought they had already decided the running order. Or am I mistaken, and the 2 halves of each round are NOT the final stage in the decision-making? Is it that, in each half they decide the order in which they sing (in other words, the 10 countries in Hungary’s half of the Thursday draw will be rearranged for the final order for that upper half, and they could end up singing anywhere from 1st to 10th in the order)? @Kris: I hope you’re right. But with regard to Soulwave, they have a major uphill to climb, having… Read more »

Yeah so jury can collude against a performer but not with a performer.Even if the jury places a pathetic performer first in their ranking the Televote will be the ultimate decider. No way they get rid of all three Gabi Toth/Soulwave/Papai Joci.

“HUN sings 3rd in the second semi”

What do you mean exactly? As far as I’m concerned, the complete running order of the Semi-Finals has not been decided yet.

@kris: If I’m not mistaken, the final 4 (the super-final) will be decided by the jury (BEFORE the people decide); and this part scares me, because the jury could throw anyone under the bus to clear the way for something the people are not that enthusiastic about.

@D: I’m more worried about Gina stealing this than I am about Gigi or KSB, especially given the scores from last week; even more worried that Gabi and Joci will be thrown under the bus by the jury to clear the way for Gina. I don’t think Gina will even come close to qualifying for the ESC Grand Final because HUN sings 3rd in the second semi and the song is short. Gigi needs a huge musical makeover to even have a chance to qualify. I’m thinking KSB may have a better chance of making the Grand Final with the… Read more »

@an esc fan – ” but I’m afraid that if Gigi or Kallay-Saunders will win, some people will say that old fashion jury rigged the vote”. Well, if Gigi or Kallay-Saunders have their personal friends in the jury and they all vote the same, giving lowest points to Gabi and Joci and putting Hatterzaj and Fall Like Rain second, it will be highly suspicious. But, if they just win over the circumstances including more genuine liking, I will not argue with that, and rarely who would. Mind you, both Gigi and KSB would score pretty low on my list, but… Read more »

What is generic for one country, it is interesting for another country. My guess is that Hungary is not so impressed by ”Hosszu idok” and ”Origo” like western countries are. I don’t care who wins, but I’m afraid that if Gigi or Kallay-Saunders will win, some people will say that old fashion jury rigged the vote. Not another Spain please!

Whoa whoa whoa! Hold up, let’s not get carried away…
@(J)ESC Fan & @Polegend – Please remember that everyone is entitled to a musical opinion on here without being personally called out. Do at least respect that side of it.

Obvious winner for Hungary is Gabi Toth, although they all look and sound interesting enough to me. It’s a good selection from Hungary! (I wish Norway could borrow a few of these songs.)

@Polegend Godgarina

I would advise you not to pay attention to him, he is just one of those trolls who automatically reject anything with proper structure or “specifically made for Eurovision” and only like “different” songs (a.k.a. messes which rarely compete in ESC). Very narrow-minded behavior, if you ask me.

@ Music is the key – you’re complaining about Hosszu idok being generic (bish where?!) and yet you stan for Sound of Our Juries and Pioneer which are the most formulaic songs ever? K.

I mean, it’s obvious. Nothing comes close in terms of quality in any of the NFs from this year!

Europe loves culturally charged entries with a great rhythm and a charming aura.

Hungary always have many interesting, innovative qualty songs….considering that, I find the song by gabi Toft quite dull and predictable. It’s more of an ESC-tailormade song. More generic. So I dn’t hope it wins!

Something better would be “Origio”. Really brave and original. Great song! Wonderful Hungarian / Arbaic mix. Stands out. Will be much more noticed in ESC too.

They usually have good sngs. i have liked them in ESC since 2012. “What about My Dreams” was last boring Harugian song.

“It’s a Riot” was the best song of all the 30 entries though….real garage rock 🙂

I’m really hoping for Gabi Totova to win, she would be amazing in Kiev! But Hungary never usually go for the fan favourite so I’m worried about a potential Gigi win….

I’ll be somewhat happy with the winner as long as Kállay Saunders Band, Gigi, and Gina don’t win. I’m rooting for Gabi, but I’d be completely fine with the others if they won. Hungary has a pretty strong final this year.
