On Saturday evening Claudia Faniello snatched the Eurovision crown in Malta, and as the dust settles PBS, the national broadcaster for the island nation, has released the full results of its annual Malta Eurovision Song Contest. The top three were announced during the live broadcast, and now us Eurovision nerds have some more votes to analyse and geek out over. Yaasss!

A total of 18,967 votes were received during the February 18 show, and the top two finished almost neck-and-neck with Claudia Faniello receiving 4,996 votes, putting her around 450 votes north of runner-up Janice Mangion, who earned 4,544 votes. Given the thunderous applause and standing ovations these two ladies received it comes at no surprise that the two vocal powerhouses came close so each other. Splitting hairs, y’all!

A bit of a gap separated Janice and third-place finisher Kevin Borg.

The Swedish Idol winner gained 2,502 votes, closely followed by our poll winner and our Wiwi Jury favourite Brooke Borg who clocked a neat 2,000 votes.

Both Kevin and Brooke slayed vocally and we think their placings are well deserved.

Rounding out the top five was the young man with the clean and clear falsetto, Franklin Calleja.

Franklin’s previous attempts at Malta Eurovision Song Contest have been a bit hit and miss.

This time his song “Follow Me” was received very well by the audience in Malta, which earned him a total of 1,303 votes.

@Purple Mask: D’OH! I forgot it was restricted to one-phone-one-vote. I’m thinking like a former ‘Idol’ viewer (one who quit watching the show after the 2011 season; for which, now the networks are desperately trying to relaunch it in the U.S.), where the rules were unrestricted, where people could vote as many times as possible. One phone, one vote, 19 minutes? Quite a decent amount of time under the rules. But with that being the case, I would have expected maybe more than 100,000 total votes, if 90% of the Maltese public watched the show. @Ari: If there’s a revamp… Read more »

@CookyMonzta: Yes, possibly. On the other hand, it doesn’t take 15 minutes to pick up the phone and only vote once. (Unless one happens to have difficulty in doing that.)
Also, Sweden’s Melfest seems to manage with only about 3 minutes of voting time! I really don’t know how they do it!

18.000 votes overall, with 14.000 of them being spread among only 4 acts. I’d say that Claudia, Janice, Kevin and Brooke have blew the competition away in every way.

If you’re perplexed as to why there were so few votes in a country of 450,000, maybe it’s because they were given only 19 minutes to vote. Now, if they were given 30 minutes, maybe the outcome might have flipped.

They should announce how long the people will have to vote, BEFORE they hit the button on that stopwatch! 🙂

I am not a ballad fan as I think Eurovision should be about energy, like a big party and celebration, not a snoozefest or crying… Still, I have to admit there are certain ballads over the years that stood up: Lane Moje (Serbia and Montenegro 2004), Lejla (Bosnia and Herzegovina 2006), Molitva (Serbia 2007), Is it true (Iceland 2009), Running scared (Azerbaijan 2001), Spain and Georgia 2012, etc… To name just a few. Not to mention classics like Johnny Logan’s “Hold me now”… BUT, this is not the case for Malta this year. If a country really wants to send… Read more »

Btw, does anybody have a clue if or when the revamped version of Ira Losco’s “Chameleon” will be made available? I found it quite enjoyable, I wish she’d performed it in full, instead of “Walk on Water”.

I am delighted by the results, albeit the televoting numbers strike me as shockingly low. My two favorite acts actually placed 1st and 2nd. Hardly ever happens. While I would have been curious to see how Janice’s more unique song would have gone down at Eurovision, Claudia was my favorite. She should have won in 2012 with “Pure” and I find “Breathlessly” equally enjoyable. They’re just special enough for me to find them decent instead of bland and dated. Fine line. I hope Claudia manages to make the final somehow. Also, I am hoping for a revamp of the song.… Read more »

Diva you sound like a typical eurotrash lover, (I am one aswell) although im not a ballad hater, as ballads do win 2006, 2014,2016, so people saying ballads wont win the public are stupid, also if they won the national finals fair and not in spanish fashion then we have to respect the results, Malta picked this and the lyrics are great and proper english! even though I wish she won in 2012 and janice won this year, anyway less ballad hate please

Malta is such a disappointment this year… Poor Brooke, she was the best in both 2016 and 2017 Maltese national selection, but in 2016 PBS, the national broadcaster preferred Ira Losco (she had 2 competing songs, who else was allowed with 2 songs in the same night?). And this year, by pity they allowed the poor Claudia Faniello to finally see her dream come true and represent Malta, after 9 unsuccessful attempts. But oh, what a boring song. And the thing is it’s a ballad, too. So the up-tempo songs will definitely stand out and fly to the final, while… Read more »

@Anabela SakamTe Well that’s not completely true in this case since you were only able to vote once from any device. So you would either need to buy lots of phones and phone-cards or have a huge fangroup. But tbh I don’t think Claudia cheated her way to the top…. at least I hope

That’s so easy to cheat in such competitions. Just invite all of your friends and family vote for you many times and that’s enough to win. They should also have jury panel included to the show.

To me, Malta is a non-qualifier this year. Another song to add to the “getting very long list” of boring ballads.
My top 3 so far:
1. Italy
2. Hungary
3. France

During the performances, it became apparent it’s between Claudia and Janice. Those were the only two acts which literally brought such standing ovations during the song. Sometimes the claps were audiable almost as much as the song. Both Claudia and Janice deserved it so much. I hoped for good results for Brooke and Maxine and here they are. Being 4th and 6th in the competition of 16 is still good. They should both try out next year. Personally, I was for Maxine for her fresh and different pop style. Even Raquela’s result is okay, considering the song was never considered… Read more »

Hmmm. Aren’t these voting points? (Not actual votes.) But anyways… That makes sense to me that Brooke was 4th. I’m hope she’s not too disheartened with the result – I definitely think she should try her luck in somewhere like Sweden, or even perhaps Germany next year? Malta doesn’t seem to appreciate her style of song enough. I’m really happy for Claudia – I think she gave the best performance on the night and really deserved it. Miriana Conte’s song I absolutely slated in the reviews, and sure enough she did come last! (So it’s good to know my musical… Read more »

Small tournout of votes…but yes only one vote was allowed from each telephone/mobile line…nearly 20,000 people voted…being Malta…not bad 🙂 🙂

Richard Edwards was the real FLOP here. You’d expect more from a previous representative who qualified to the final.

Wrong choice, Malta.
Not a lot of votes, though.

Polegend Godgarina

But omg those are such FLOP televoting figures for a show watched by 92% of the market share in a country of 450,000.

Yaasss @ Raquela Dalli Gonzi being in the top half! I knew she would outdo everyone’s expectations. I’m still shook Brooke Borg flopped so hard, she deserved to win much more than Claudia Faniello.
