It’s the country who has already made a major impact in the two years they’ve been competing in Eurovision. Now Australian broadcaster SBS has started igniting the flames of their Eurovision 2017 participation across their social media. SBS has teased fans, saying “all will be revealed soon”. The suspense is killing us!

Australia have a stellar record at Eurovision since their competitive debut in Vienna in 2015, when Guy Sebastian placed fifth. Last year Australia achieved even bigger success, with vocal powerhouse Dami Im slaying her way into second place in the final.

The only way up from here is to actually win, we have made a list of three potential artists that could snatch that trophy out of Ukraine’s hands and take the glass microphone down under.

The Veronicas

The Veronicas seem like the most likely candidate to represent Australia at this moment in time. And their calendar is clear. There are rumours of a new album in June, and the duo are booked at a music festival on May 23rd – both of which would fit in right after a potential appearance in Kyiv.

The Origliasso sisters are signed to Sony Music Australia, alongside Jessica Mauboy, Guy Sebastian and Dami Im. They have also had a longstanding career in Australia with some success throughout Europe and the USA during their debut in the mid-2000s. Their new sound is modern, current and radio friendly and would slay the scoreboard.

We’ve continuously mentioned The Veronicas even before Guy Sebastian was announced in 2015. And back then, The Veronicas openly said that they thought the idea of participating in Eurovision would be fun.

Samantha Jade

Another name being tossed around the Eurovision community is former X Factor Australia winner Samantha Jade. She is also signed with Sony Music Australia, and her bubble-gum pop style mixed with her drop-dead gorgeous appearance would make her an ideal candidate for Eurovision 2017.

Apart from a duet with fellow X Factor winner Cyrus, Samantha Jade has been a little quiet on the music scene lately. The same was said for Dami Im before the contest in Stockholm last year, and Eurovision seemed to re-launch her career. Maybe Samantha Jade could benefit from a similar profile boost.

A Facebook group has been created recently to get Samantha Jade to Kyiv, and has gained over 1,400 likes. Power to the people!

Isaiah Firebrace

And just when you thought we were done name-dropping former X Factor Australia winners, we have to mention Isaiah Firebrace. As the most recent X Factor winner, the 17-year-old has also come out publicly expressing his interest in representing Australia at Eurovision.

His debut single, “It’s Gotta Be You” didn’t share the same success on the charts in Australia as his X Factor predecessors did, but he had better luck in Europe. The single charted in the top 20 in Sweden, the top 30 in Denmark, and in the top 100 in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and The Netherlands. Keep building that European fanbase, gurl! It might come in handy one day.

The artists we’re unlikely to see

Unfortunately for Eurovision fans, it seems unlikely that we’ll see the likes of Delta Goodrem representing Australia this year. The pop icon has signed on to coach another season of The Voice Australia. She could perhaps apply her talents in writing the song for Australia the same way she did at Junior Eurovision 2015.

Another unlikely choice for 2017 is Jessica Mauboy. Although she’s already graced the Eurovision stage, a lot of people would love to see her actually compete in the contest. Jessica has recently signed up for another series of the popular TV drama “The Secret Daughter”. But we would love to see her face again on the Eurovision stage.

Who would you like to see represent Australia at Eurovision 2017?

It’s being reported that SBS has chosen Isaiah Firebrace, winner of 2016 X-Factor, as their representative for 2017 Eurovision. If true, this is a HORRIBLE choice and I doubt Australia even advances to the Finals.

After last years contest I thought that it might be Marliza Punzalan because of her minority/X Factor background. But it seems that she isn’t involved with Sony anymore

I’ve been mentioning The Veronicas since last year it would be a dream come true to finally see them on ESC! I wonder what song they could send and what show they would put on. Anyways what ever act Oz is planning to send, its gonna tough to follow up on Dami Im’s performance last year.

Dannii Minogue can’t sing. Plus she’s blatant racist. She’d be a huge embarrassment for Australia.

An interesting choice that no one’s mention is Empire of the Sun. They’re already hugely popular in Europe so that would give them a leg up. Plus their flamboyance is perfect for Eurovision.

But SBS will go with the safe pick: the Veronicas, which kinda worries me because their dark Goth look can scare some people. And they’re not afraid to speak their mind which could rub people the wrong way. They’re obviously not Dami Im, who won over the Eurovision press and the fans with her elegance and charm.

Still, I don’t like how it’s essentially Sony Music Australia who are the participant, not SBS. Organize a damn national final! Have public submissions!

@Darren Spain was fantastic in 2014 and 2015’s song was great though the live performance was a little overdone at the expense of the vocals. I think Spain has a problem getting support but I don’t think it’s Australia’s fault. All we do is take it seriously and put in great entries. It’s not our fault that from time to time countries get screwed. I think voting blocs are to blame there, but in any case the advice to whinging countries should always be: “be better”, not “ugh, I can’t believe Australia is in Eurovision.” PS. I’m not going to… Read more »

@D
Well it’s easy really, UK have entered songs like “Tonight Again” in 2008, as too have Germany in 2009…then really there is a few songs silimiar in sound and quality to “Sound of Silence” every single year! But some of my examples are Spain 2014, 2015. Malta 2015 which didn’t even qualify! U.K. 2014, Ireland and Norway 2010…the list continues really.

I really would love to see Samantha Jade at Eurovision shes got an amazing voice and she absolutely slays on stage but I do think it will be the Veronicas which I’m fine with. The Veronicas are great and with the right song I’m sure they Will do very well.

There’s indeed a favouritism towards Australia! They do send great songs, well produced, which stand out among others due to the production. But, there’s such a buzz around Australia. For example, personally, “Sound of silence” wasn’t my favourite song last year. Dami Im is a great singer and performer but the song wasn’t great. And it came 1st with the jury vote?? Said what?? 4th in the televote was normal for me. It wasn’t the best song of all. Same for Russia, as the juries ranked it low most of the times, whlile there were songs worse than this. Sorry,… Read more »

Australia send good song , but is overrated by juries votes because they are EBU baby. Dami In don t deserved 320 points from juries and second Ukraine 211 and coutnries from 3rd to 10 th place got from 115 to 148 points.
We all knew that juries will pushed so hard Australia and Ukraine to neutralize points for Russia in televote and Russia was favorite 1 for win.

@Darren, do tell us about all theses times a country sent a song, performance and live vocal of Dami’s quality and weren’t rewarded? It’s easy to throw out a line like that but you need to back it up.

Darren
Darren

@Zack Many other countries have sent songs similar to Guy’s and Dami’s and they wouldn’t even have broken top 10. Many haven’t even qualified, but it’s simply because it’s Australia and the EBU wants Eurovision to appeal to more countries and they want to launch a new contest in Asia that Australia suddenly becomes the king of Eurovision. And no, you don’t have to be “hating on Australia” that’s not what is going on, it’s just the blatant favouritism towards them that annoys me. Of course SBS will allow Australia to participate if they have a special relationship with the… Read more »

People hate on Australia because they send quality songs. If you just look at the Tele-voting, Guy was 6th, and Dami was 4th. Yes the jury rewards quality songs but don’t make it sound like the public rated them bottom 5 for both years.

Remember, Serbia won on their first year (2007), yet people were despising the fact Australia nearly won on their 2nd attempt.

@Rich Australia is only a force to reckon with because they are new and the EBU is totally in love with them. I’ve got nothing but love for Australia, beautiful country and beautiful people, but no! Their success story in ESC is only a success because the EBU want it to be. I’ll never get used to Australia being here BUT they are here now and they are not going anywhere. They will win soon, because suddenly nobody makes music like Australia. 😉 If I had to choose one act from that list it would be The Veronica’s. They are… Read more »

I’d still bet the farm on Jessica Mauboy to be selected this time around. Between her and the Veronicas, it will depend on whose window of opportunity is closing faster. Despite the fact that the Veronicas have been in the spotlight longer, it is Jessica who may need this even more.

“The Veronicas” are such a big flop in recent years. It’s 2017, not 2008 xD
We don’t need more bad generic songs like “In my blood.

EBU is desperate for them to win in order to justify their presence at the EUROvision – but again, they take it very seriously, and I’m confident this year it’ll be no different. The Veronicas haven’t been interesting in years though, I’d prefer someone else like Samantha Jade.

I used to be a huge fan of The Veronicas, but I want ANDREW LOADSMAN to represent Australia this year. He placed 4th in The voice Australia 2016, and answered to my comment on youtube, that he will release new music in early March this year. That would be amazing, if he participates, as we need some more male vocalists and rock music in Eurovision 2017!

Anyway, since Sony music paid a large amount of the fee and I’m pretty sure they have a contract with SBS, you can probably narrow down the list to a handful of popular artists signed to sony

I’m curious about Australia’s entry, because is a country that wants to win NOW.
Australia wanted VERY much to win since day one, and now more than ever, Asiavision might exist soon, and Australia wants to stay in Eurovision I guess.
Forget about Veronicas, Australia will send a winner, number one or nothing.
I like Isaiah, he seems talented and likable

if I was paul Clarke and they all wanted to do it, the veronicas are a no brainer, but they are NOT family friendly and maybe loose cannons, they cant be corralled and they may embarrass Australia, the young fans might love them, but the older viewers will hate them, and the juries may hate them also , so the song has to be good to counter the Juries. In order to win they have to slay every time in the rehearsals and in the finals like Dami did, otherwise no win. Good luck to who ever it is, and… Read more »

@Hugh – Josef Salvat would be an awesome choice, but alas, I would expect him to turn up representing the UK before Oz. Which might be smart, voting for an Australian might be the only way we give the UK 12 points.
I think it would be hilarious if Gina G turned up to represent Australia one year.
Salvat’s single heading home even reminded me of the Eurovision We are One Malmo butterfly logo.

All three would be worthy….although The Veronicas in my own opinion would obviously become a huge fan favourite if chosen. Austrailia certainly knows how to keep us in suspense. Something which the UK should adopt if we ever go back to a solely internal selection process. The year Molly was selected in my opinion was a very wise move, choosing an up and coming singer/songwriter who has huge success at gigging at music festivals, events and has had internet exposure. The momentum she had coming into the contest i believe was high, the most the UK has had in years… Read more »

I don’t like any of these three. The Veronicas write boring songs, Isaiah doesn’t have enough experience. Samantha Jade is absolutely terrible live.

I don’t think it will be Samantha Jade as SBS has stated that they want someone to represent their brand; and we all know their brand is minorities. #celebratediversity

I have a lot of love for The Veronicas so would love to see them do Eurovision but also do well. They’re great songwriters, just genuinely lovely women every single time I have encountered them, and their Hook Me Up album was quite the gamechanger back in 2007 and they still are making quality music now I feel. It makes me a little sad still seeing their Neon ‘The Veronicas’ light hanging up almost rather proudly on display at the Warner UK offices every time I walk past the building knowing their woes them and feel it’s the perfect time… Read more »
