Earlier in the month, Czech broadcaster CT confirmed their artist for Kyiv would be the jazz singer Martina Bárta. Now more details have emerged about her song for Kyiv. The song is titled “My Turn” and it’s a ballad.

Martina has been shooting the “My Turn” music video

Broadcaster CT filed a report from the “My Turn” music video shoot, which included snippets of Martina’s song. “My Turn” is said to explore the issue of intimacy in relationships. From the snippets, it appears to be a gentle ballad, suited to Martina’s classically trained vocal style.

The music video involves Martina performing the song while surrounded by underwear-clad models. But it’s not quite as saucy as it might sound — the models represent people of different genders, ethnicities and body shapes. Celebrate diversity, y’all!

In an earlier interview, Martina revealed that she had been offered two songs. One was a pop song in a Katy Perry style written by a Swedish team, and the other was “My Turn”. Her chosen song was written by a British team and Martina felt it was a better match for her style.

The full version of “My Turn” is expected to be released later in February. Watch the news report and listen to the song snippet here.

Czech Republic at Eurovision

Since their Eurovision debut in 2007, the Czech Republic has only competed five times — and not always with the best results.

After Gipsy.cz scored nil points in their semi-final in 2009, Czechia took a four-year break from the competition. They returned in 2015 in much stronger form.

In Vienna, Marta Jandova & Vaclav Noid Barta’s entry “Hope Never Dies” still didn’t qualify for the final, but it managed 13th place and was a fan favourite. Then in Stockholm, Gabriela Guncikova made history when she became the very first Czech act to reach the final with her power ballad “I Stand”.

What do you think of the “My Turn” snippets? Will Martina continue the Czech Republic’s comeback and place even better in Kyiv? Share your thoughts below!

Oh no – ballad isn`t good choice. I prefer different genres of music but I don`t like ballads. These are so boring.

I See this being amazing tbh. I Could just sense it in the song from the 5 second snippet lol!

An artist has to be true to themselves. I just wish we could get some artists who are true to a more up tempo song.

@Purple that’d be half a million Euros.
Or you can enter with contigo for free and win ESC 2017 for San Marino.

BTW, 5 seconds IS enough to tell this is going to be a ballad, unless she really shifts genres after the first 30 seconds. Somehow, knowing CT, they won’t be bringing anything upbeat, catchy or original. It’ll just be NICE, but that’s about it. 🙂

Mon dieu! Not another ballad…*sigh*. Do we really need more of them this year?? How about NO. Sorry, Czechia, this is not going to get you to the final. Same vibe as Finland, which is arguably better. Something more mid-tempo or up-tempo would have been better, with some Czech language thrown in or something…disappointing. 🙁

It’s an open door for San Marino it seems. Second half of the second semi-final – all they need is an uptempo song and they would qualify! How much do I need to pay them again? 😀

This year to me is far worse than last year. I can’t even find a favorite song.

@Robyn Gallagher
What do you mean¿ Uptempo songs always rank better than slow ones¿ They are more successful¿ So lets do this contest as Eurovision Party Song Contest ,fair¿ Good songs can come in all forms and genres. If your music taste is limited with uptempo party songs, that doesnt mean ballads are bad and less successful. Please stop this ballad prejudice and uptempo song yearnings¡

Hard to judge from just 5 secs, but it seems promising.

Btw, wasn’t Czech Republic going to start suing the familiar “Czechia” name as from ESC 2017?

Another ballad 🙁
I got to the point where I don’t even care if a slow song is good, I just don’t want any more ballads.

Of course we can’t judge from 5sec. We have to listen to the full song.
However, I have to say her voice sounds so beautiful and unique. It seems a ballad, but I believe it fits her style and voice.
For me, what I heard is promising and I think I’m going to like this one.
Looking forward to the song!

She reminds me of a young Carrie Fisher “Princess Leia” in appearance.

It sounds as if she has a nice voice, of the five seconds i heard of the song.

Time will tell….

It sounds pretty promising imo!! I like her full voice – it might stand out from other ballads. Let’s wait to see how it looks as a whole. Well done, Czech Republic!

Frau Von Storch – It was literally 5 seconds long, and you can’t “definitely” dismiss songs at this point even if it was the full song. We’re still waiting for 30 other songs to be released lmao

I’ll reserve judgement until we can actually listen to the song, but it doesn’t sound like something I’m gonna like so far. For some reason I’m getting a knockoff version of “A Million Voices” from the snippet and video concept.

This sounds like a decent midtempo ballad, could be good.

I think it will be the best ballad of all the ballads so far. It were only like 5 seconds but i liked what i heared xD

@ AzeriBoy96 – honestly, we need and deserve our share of dance bops. Or else the Eurovision will turn into Festivali i Kenges with all those ballads. I hope an uptempo song will win this year to change the trend for 2018. One of Bulgaria’s candidates could be the quality uptempo song we’re all looking for, I hope BNT chooses that instead of the other shortlisted singer with the ballad. Also, I have high hopes in Demy’s dance song (which I haven’t heard, but Greece is Greece).

Snippet is a loose term here, and I’m relishing in all the up front “It’s too boring” comments here already. It’s a ballad, You don’t like it, we get it. Not enough of a snippet for me to tell how good it is, but it’s a little concerning sith so many ballads already announced. It might get lost in all that unless it’s particularly good. Time to play the waiting game!

Polegend Godgarina

I can’t tell anything from that five-second snippet, but come on… didn’t they learn the lesson from last year? Ballads will get them nowhere. Just send something with personality.

@Frau Von Storch
And what made you think that way? It was just 5 secs snippet of the song. If it’s a ballad it doesn’t mean it has to be bad. Enough with all those pop, shake-shake entries in Eurovision, it’s just doesn’t work anymore, please

Kinda wish she chose the pop song, but nonetheless the message of it sounds intriguing.

The snippet doesn’t offer much of a listen to judge it, but it sounds okay so far.
