It’s a new day and the sun is shining in beautiful Lisbon. And we’re just one week away from the Grand Final of Festival da Canção. Following a ballad-heavy first semi-final and a much more contemporary second semi-final, we’ve entered the final stretch in the race to sing for Portugal at Eurovision 2017. On Sunday March 5 eight finalists will compete for the ticket to Kyiv. The lines in Portugal are already open but we always love to have a poll of our own.

The eight finalists are Jorge Benvinda, Pedro Gonçalves, Lena D’Água, Salvador Sobral, Fernando Daniel, Celina da Piedade, Deolinda Kinzimba and Viva la Diva. You can listen to all of their Festival da Canção 2017 songs below. Then vote in our poll.

JORGE BENVINDA – “GENTE BESTIAL”

PEDRO GONÇALVES – “DON’T WALK AWAY”

LENA D’ÁGUA – “NUNCA ME FUI EMBORA”

SALVADOR SOBRAL – “AMAR PELOS DOIS”

FERNANDO DANIEL – “POEMA A DOIS”

CELINA DA PIEDADE – “PRIMAVERA”

DEOLINDA KINZIMBA – “O QUE EU VI NOS MEUS SONHOS ”

VIVA LA DIVA – “NOVA GLÓRIA”

POLL: WHO SHOULD WIN PORTUGAL’S NATIONAL FINAL FESTIVAL DA CANÇÃO 2017?

You can vote for as many acts as you want, but you can only vote once. Be sure to tick the box next to each act you want to support before pressing submit.

This poll will close at 16:00 CET on Saturday and the results will be published before the National Final.

After you vote, feel free to defend your choice in the comment section below and by using our new app. Who deserves to win Portugal’s ticket to Kyiv and why?

Pedro is by far the best choice, and Salvador is overrated imo.

Gosh, Salvador’s song is a copy of a disney instrumental. Should never qualify. David was mediocre. Can’t remember the others.

Pedro should win, his entry would stand out with all the ballads.

Salvado has the best song by far. Celina is catchy and original. Pedro song’s is a bad remade version of Paradise- Cold Play.

As a swed, i can only see Pedro being picked by our judges. Or even seeing his song on Supernova. EVERYTHING else was so…old…and sad. This year is already being depressing enough with many good ballads…if Portugal sends a ballad, they won’t a survive a semi final. Salvador sounds like brazilian music, and his mannerisms are wayy too weird, will scare the judges.
I hope the guy of ‘Dont walk away’ will represent Portugal, because otherwise, you wont qualify with Salvador or the others. We are in 2017. Send something modern like Pedro gonzalves!

After listening to the 8 songs I will mention only those that I think guaranteed choices for the final:
1. Salvador Sobral ” Amar pelos Dios” it’s a wonderful unearthly love song, a real classy one. Easily stands out among the dozens of ballads this year in ESC.
2. Celina Peidade ” Primavera” a catchy happy folk song.
The others songs can eventually reach the final but not shure.

I wouldn’t be surprised if RTP was looking into calling the whole thing off after reading these comments! 😀 Some of you just have no respect for the artists, do you? Where’s the love, hmmmm? 😛 Having said that it’s my turn now, and I might be just as critical, haha… Firstly the good: I love Deolinda’s voice; she is my favourite, and i’m loving the Motown feel of the song as well. Salvador has a beautiful song from the mid-20th century, but at least it’s not as dated as Fernando Daniels’s lyric poem that belongs in the 19th Century(!!)… Read more »

Oh I enjoyed so well half of finalists, exactly from Salvador till Deolinda! ‘Primavera’ is a cacther for me 🙂 Salvador’s ‘Amar Pelos Dois’ is a very classy in second half when sung by him. Either you need nothing or super-romantic stage with his half-tricky geek attitude, bless his health. So concerned to enjoy songs twice in final, not sure about time.

Okay…Pedro goncalves, for sure. Portugal has been trying the same old formula all these years with ballads in portuguese, the jury DOESN’T CARE! Neither do Eurofans, we can’t understand what the singer was saying. Deolinde and Salvador both awful, won’t survive the finals. Go with a song in english with a modern pop beat, and that’s what you’ll find with Pedro. He will stand out, plus he’s cute and young, which might help. I’d vote!

The whole festival was awful but Pedro is the only option if Portugal wants to reach the finals. Salvador would never survive a semi final, it was dull, the other ballads will crush him hard.
You better pick ‘Don’t walk away’ because everything else was OLD FASHIONED, BORING, SLOW. We’ve seen that from you in other years. Send Pedro. See ya.

I’ve watching the first semi final because of Fernando Daniel. I Voted him because I am a fan of his voice . I didn’t pay any attention for the others entries . Very very low expectancy. Later I realise that I was not fair at all. At the final I’ll vote in SALVADOR SOBRAL because his song is clearly the best.

Uh, I don’t get these comments talking about Salvador maybe not doing well with televote. Didn’t he finish 3rd in the televote in the first semi? That may well be good enough.

The song by SALVADOR SOBRAL is clearly the best… No doubt will be the winner. Even by televoting he will get it.

If that is the actual running-order for Saturday, then Viva La Diva have been given an advantage, possibly a decisive one. It’s an awful mess imho, but it could well appeal to televoters, and the juries will respond to the operatic voices. I’m even more sure now that Salvador’s chances are very slight. It is a heartbreaking, beautiful song, sung with great feeling and tenderness, but it’s just too fragile a flower to survive the brutality of televoting. The juries will probably secure him a decent placing, but not a victory. My prediction is now (in view of the running… Read more »

I voted for Pedro but I regret. I hope my country pick Salvador. He gives me chills. I don’t care if Salvador doesn’t do well in Kiev, but would make me proud to have such an outstanding perfomance. And what is Eurovision? It’s more than a competition! I would like to win, but I prefer to send something that makes me, as a Portuguese, proud because in the end is all that matters.

A list of songs world wide acclaimed that are simply not modern (if that there is a modern concept of music…:
Amy Winehouse – Valerie;
Michael Bublé – Haven’t Met You Yet
Conchita Wurts – Rise like a phoenix
Adele – Send My Love (To Your New Lover)
Meghan Trainor – All About That Bass

Salvador Sobral must win…

First of all: things are not looking good for Portugal this year! Unfortunately! I really want them to do well and come back to the final! They’ve experienced so many non-qualifications! From the 8 songs I like Salvador Sobral with “Amar Pelos Dois”. Simple yet beautiful! And we’ve seen that a song doesn’t have to be too “noisy” to do well. From the 2nd semi no song stood out but I have to say Celina da Piedade with “Primavera” reminded me of songs like Malta in 2013, or even Portugal itself in 2008-09 (I’m not sure) when they sent again… Read more »

I think Salvador’s song is the best by a country mile, but is is not ‘modern’, which is the ultimate crime these days. I fully expect Portugal to choose Pedro and for him to finish stone cold last in the first semi-final in Kiev.

Salvador is not going to win Eurovision, but he would add a touch of class to the contest. Sadly, I can’t see the song being picked, and I think it might even shock people by finishing near the bottom of the pile. Perhaps the running order will do him a few favours . . .

Salvador. Pedro’s song may be modern, but his vocals weren’t up to par and the song itself isn’t actually that great. Salvador has a great voice and a very pretty song.

Just because Pedro sound modern it doesn’t change the fact that the entry is a total mess. Plus, we have too much plastic eletropop from the swedish lobby. So I say no.

Salvador is the only acceptable choice. Charming, haunting, genuine. No one can be indifferent to this piece of art!

Salvador’s song is so beautiful. It sounds like it’s taken from a Disney classic, in a totally grown up way. The lullaby aspect brings a sense of peace and serenity.

Salvador clearly has the best song. But for real, can someone teach him something about stage presence? It’s an absolute beauty to listen to, but I can’t bear to watch him perform. He’s just hunching over in his ugly and distracting over-sized suit, while fiddling with his fingers like some movie villain conspiring his evil masterplan. Not to mention all the times he looks to be dozing off and almost falling over. Please, it’s so awful. Fix that, and Portugal can definitely qualify.

Salvador and Fernando have nice songs. I’m not sure either is a top 10 material, but they are both enjoyable.

Deolinda sounds good, but the song needs more times to get into it.

Pedro’s song is overrated just for being in English. Nothing special for me.

Celina and Jorge have songs sounding like carnival background music.

Lena’s song is the most boring song ever. No chorus, no musical build-up. Just awful.

Viva la Diva are a car crash. It’s memorable, but over-the-top. A woman would be so much better on her own.

It’s amazing how the 1st semifinal is full of female ballads and songs in full english, whereas the 2nd semifinal is much more diverse…
