Elena Gheorghe Body Song 2017 Romania Eurovision 2017

She’s the daughter of a preacher man who flaunted her assets at Eurovision 2009. And now, almost eight years later, Romania’s Elena Gheorghe is releasing the appropriately named “Body Song”.

Elena is very much a Jekyll and Hyde kind of girl – her songs are either po-faced ballads or frothy Europop. We’re happy to report that “Body Song” lies firmly in the latter category.

The opening lines set the tone – “Baby, I’ll be all you need, set your gasoline on fire”. Hey, no one ever tuned into the “Balkan Girl” for her lyrical depth.

This is pure unabashed nonsense, and all the better for it. And just in case one were tempted to try and decipher the meaning behind the single’s central hook – “All night we’re dancing like all alone in the zone, you know what’s on my mind, that’s my body song” – the flame-haired beauty throws in a timely pop-drop, leaving nothing but the dancefloor on our minds.

The fun continues into the music video, which sees Elena channel her inner domestic goddess in a bid to impress an extremely photogenic photographer.

She prepares an array of decadent baked goods especially for him, before her harem of backing dancers magically transform her geeky attire into sleek evening wear.

The pair meet again by the swimming pool – all the better for the object of her desires to show off his muscle-toned arms and torso – where Elena’s dancers helpfully push the man into the water.

But, of course, these shenanigans are only temporary diversions on the path to true love, or at the very least a date night.

Romania at Eurovision

Romania is one of the powerhouses of modern Eurovision. Since the introduction of the semi-finals, they’ve only missed the grand final once — and that was only because the EBU had expelled them from Eurovision for not paying their bills.

That was last year. For 2017, the country will be hoping to secure its first top ten placing since Paula Seling & Ovi in 2010.

But first it needs to select its representative. The Selectia Nationala 2017 final takes place on Sunday, 5 March.
