Hovig Gravity lyrics eurovision 2017 cyprus (1)

In recent days he’s been teasing his Eurovision 2017 song “Gravity” with a series of interstellar snippets that looked sleek, chic and totally expensive.

And this afternoon fans are finally experiencing the full force of Hovig, as his entry leaked several hours before Wednesday’s scheduled reveal. That prompted the official Eurovision channel to publish his music video, which you can see below.

HOVIG’s track brings a new flavor to the contest. The dark and mysterious opening includes deep electro beats and syncopated clapping, both of which set the tone for this on-trend, contemporary and intriguing track.

Thematically the song addresses Hovig’s wish to support his beloved. Like gravity, he does that by keeping her centred and secure. As he says: “Let me be your wings/ When you’re flying high/ I’m gonna raise you up till you touch the sky/ I’ll catch you when you fall/When you’re falling free/ Let me be, be your gravity.”

The video sees Hovig dancing in darkness — and seemingly on the horizon of a celestial body — as his special lady strikes poses opposite.

The polished sound and sleek finish come courtesy of Swedish Eurovision legend Thomas G:Son. G:son, who has written hits including “Euphoria”, “In A Moment Like This” and “Invincible”, wrote Minus One’s “Alter Ego” last year.

A number of Eurovision fans have been quick to point out that there’s a slight whiff of Rag’n’Bone Man’s “Human” — particularly in the introduction. Thankfully this dissipates as the song goes on.

So what do you think? Are you feeling Hovig’s sound? Do you think that Cyprus can improve on its placing from last year? And what do you make of the Rag’n’Bone comparisons? Let us know in the comments box below.

“Gravity” lyrics — HOVIG (Eurovision 2017)

No matter where you’re going
No matter where you be
Wherever the wind is blowing
Let me be your gravity

I can be your hero
I can be your fantasy
I can be the cure
Yeah
Let me be
Your remedy

Right beside you
I’ll never leave you

Let me be your heart and your company
I’ll let you be the one who can lean on me
I’ll catch you when you fall
When you’re falling free
Let me be, be your gravity

Let me be your wings
When you’re flying high
I’m gonna raise you up till you touch the sky
I’ll catch you when you fall
When you’re falling free
Let me be, be your gravity

Touch me, inseparably
Like gravity

As high as the highest mountain
As low as the deepest sea
Oh settle down, just let me be your gravity

Let me be your heart and your company
I’ll let you be the one who can lean on me
I’ll catch you when you fall
When you’re falling free
Let me be, be your gravity

Let me be your wings
When you’re flying high
I’m gonna raise you up till you touch the sky
I’ll catch you when you fall
When you’re falling free
Let me be, be your gravity

Touch inseparably
It’s all we’ll ever be
You be gravity

Let me be your heart and your company
I’ll let you be the one who can lean on me
I’ll catch you when you fall
When you’re falling free
Let me be, be your gravity

Let me be your wings
When you’re flying high
I’m gonna raise you up till you touch the sky
I’ll catch you when you fall
When you’re falling free
Let me be, be your gravity

I’ll catch you when you fall
When you’re falling free
Let me be, be your gravity

I hope Cyprus does well. It’s not great but a decent effort.

I expected that they would produce a better song. I’m not impressed but it’s not bad it’s okay I guess!

One of the 3 Greek national final songs leaked today. ERT deleted the video on YouTube, but you can still watch it here:

It’s pretty good actually. Not the best, but obviously better than Slovenia’s bland ballad and Poland’s incomprehensible song

Honestly this is pretty good! Catchy, contemporary and great beat. Won’t be in the top 5 but it’s definitely not bad!

@Purple Mask Thank you for extended comments! I remember another cool, thoroughly made for Angeelia 🙂
Your suggestion means detailed rework which I couldn’t guess due to not having prof musical education to explain vision. I also probably was incorrect while writing ‘fasten’ instead of ‘increase’ for bpm so that made you to add 2 par.
Percussion doesn’t evolve here at all, bogging down looped melody without bridges, which results in non contagious track – that’s enough for it 🙂

The comments are harsh. It’s not the song of the year but I think it’s catchy, interesting and the production sounds professional! A good entry from Cyprus.

I wonder if the Cypriot broadcaster specifically ordered a song like this. I doubt they wanna win. Maybe they told G:son to pull something out his wastepaper basket that might give them the chance qualifying but at the same something barely able to make the Top 20 in the final. If that’s the case, he nailed it. I don’t even wanna watch the music video, the one listen to audio still exhausts me. I won’t bother with this again right until he performs in the semi final, where he’ll hopefully stay. Otherwise, I’ll suffer through it two times. I didn’t… Read more »

Eh it’s nothing special. Not bad but doesn’t do anything for me either. It’ll probably stand out in the semi with all the emotional ballads but itll be forgotten in the final.

can we just put a ban on tragic song titles like “Gravity” or “____ Stars” or “____ Fire” like as soon as you name your song that all of my interest dies

the song is promising for like five seconds and then it gets annoying
I guess I have to count on like Belgium or one of the Balkans for true quality music because this year is really bland so far

I really do like it on first listen, it sounds current and has a good beat to it. A catchy little number i must say. Thumbs up from me!

next up… a second listen is beckoning.

First listen it does not impress. I agree with people who think it is more dated than modern. This does not deserve to be in the same conversation as “Human”.

I like this, it’s very enjoyable, it’s catchy. Of course, if it were Russia it’d be Top 3 for sure and everybody would go “Moscow 2018”, but yeah, it’s only Cyprus.

Meh. G:son definitely lost his touch. Cheesy lyrics and dull instrumental not to mention that is plagiarized from Rag n Bone Man. Nothing original or interesting whatsoever. They will need a lot of work on stage to even dream about the qualification.

@Zebb: That’s an interesting idea. I think changing the supporting beat would also be an option, so that in addition to higher bpm there might also be more syncopation allowed. The problems are two-fold with this song: 1. The “Gravity” concept is very “grounded” (pardon the pun) and arguably can only really express one idea across 3 minutes. 2. Increasing the tempo might mean the song comes up short in content. (I know bpm is different to tempo.) The lack of creative options for this song make it lose a few marks on its content score – it’s not that… Read more »

Modern production, but that chorus though, a big LOL at it! Sounds soooo weak, yes its catchy, but at the same time rather weak, doesn’t impress me at all! I expected something better from Gsson this time. You cant wint eurovision with a song like this. Qualification is possible, but it really needs a strong performance. No contender.

The more I listen to this, the more I think: it’s catchy, it’s enjoyable… but it’s so uninspired. It’s basically Pioneer 2.0 – a completely formulaic song that might make it to the final, without leaving too many people impressed.

This is a great song….. I don’t understand all the hate that it is getting. Hovig CAN sing, if you watch him in the Greek X factor, and the Cypriot national final. He will get to the finals, people are forgetting he is an Armenian Cypriot, and is in a Semi-Final will both Greece, and Armenia.

Haha, the second guess is that vocal line reminds (just a lil) Londonbeat’s hit. ‘Human’ was good for me only in Rudimental remix, so I don’t care about resemblance. Maybe it would be good to fasten bpm here too so it could raise wish to dance but that’s just personal guess. Can’t say I’m in, but in the end it’s not bad.

@Frau Von Storch “Of course I heard him perform live” I didn’t know. That’s why I asked. So sorry about that. “Why do you bring up Germany specifically, if I may ask? Is it out of jealousy?” No, it’s not out of jealousy. I have nothing against Germany. Why should I? Because I was referred to it? And I didn’t speak about Germany but also about Sweden 2015: ““Perfect life” is similar to “Titanium”. Even “Heroes” was similar to “Lovers of the sun” and it won.” (that’s what I wrote) The first examples came to my mind. My point was… Read more »

‘Gravity’ is a current track and Hovig’s voice adds something special to it, the production seems expensive too. That said, this lack the power of a winner, not to mention that it lacks of any emotion and sound a bit prefabricated. Overall, I kinda like it, but I don’t feel anything while listening to it. Cyprus is in the 1st semifinal, so will struggle to qualify, an innovative staging would help to.

This year, Cyprus is trying hard, but ‘Alter Ego’ was better for me. Anyway, I’m happy they take the contest seriously. Keep this way Cyprus!

It is not bad. But I swear we need a vintage song, all of these “modern/contemporary” entries sound almost the same to me. I think, after 20 songs, it is still between Italy and France. And I started to think with the abundance of over-produced songs like Germany, Cyprus, ..etc, and the elimination of Tayanna in the Ukrainian national final, the simplicity of UK started to stand out. I predict that they will sandwich Ukraine between two “modern/contemporary” songs in the running order and millions of old farts, like myself will vote for it.

Good song but… He won’t qualify or will be on borderline. Semi Final 1 is mooooooooore hard than Semi Final 2. There are many great and popular songs like Moldavia , Latvia , Poland , Finland.. then join Sweden , Iceland , Armenia , Greece , Australia and Czech R… so I don’t see Cyprus at Grand Final.

My opinion: It’s a good song. I actually like it. It’s contemporary, it has electronic sound and the music video is interesting. To be honest, it was a bit of a let down listening to the intro as “Human” came straight to my mind. But I think as the song progresses this “Human” vibe is lost and we listen to a different song. Every year is difficult for Cyprus to qualify, but they did it in 2016 and 2015. It’s a difficult semi. However, it’s different from the songs of the 1st semi we know so far. He’s a man… Read more »

Oh, look! Another English pop song written by a Swede! How original! *wink* Cyprus is becoming Azerbaijan 2.0. Seriously. Mid-table for me. Nothing special, unique or notable here. We’ve heard this before. Similar result as Minus One. He’ll get votes mostly from Armenia and Greece. 🙂

@Purple Mask “I much preferred last year’s rock entry from Cyprus” Yeah, me too. I absolutely loved this song from the beginning. Probably the best entry ever! @Frau Von Storch “What did you expect? Did you really expect it was going to be a song in the likes of Sam Smith or something?” Of course not. Cuprus isn’t known for sending GREAT, AMAZING, BRILLIANT songs. At least they try and the last couple of years successfully. I believe they’re on the right direction. “It’s an extremely poor PARODY imitation of Rag’n’Bone Man” Yes, it has similarities with “Human” but don’t… Read more »

The two songs share that midtempo synth element, but Human has more of a gospel sound to it and Gravity has more of a Backstreet Boys boyband sound to it. Speaking of copying, did Cyprus borrow Montenegro’s hair-flipping woman from last year? 🙂

Anyways, I like the song but don’t love it. I think the melody (especially in the chorus) is a bit too early 2000s boyband mixed with early 2000s latin style like Ricky Martin. I’d probably stick this around 10th right now for me.

It’s good – a little bit understated, but it suits the song very well. I reckon this will end up around 10th-12th in my list once all countries have been revealed. (For Cyprus, that pretty good.)

Indeed @James about “The Killers,” but I happen to be a fan of their music as well, so Cyprus 2016’s track sounding a bit like that didn’t bother me so much. – I liked the similarity.
@Evy: Correction: “Apollo” isn’t plagiarism; it just happens to be an old song that is being used. Small difference there. 😉

I don’t think Hovig’s good looks alone will save this entry, but good staging (and a good video) might put it higher in my list – we’ll have to wait and see for that.
