They’re taking a Shakespearean epic and turning it into Eurovision duet dynamite. But before their big win at the final of Eesti Laul 2017, Koit Toome & Laura didn’t have victory on their minds.

“I didn’t think we were going to win until the end,” Koit admits to our media partners and on-the-scene queens from DELFI.ee, Estonia’s largest tabloid. “The competition this year is tough.”

Laura’s concern was nailing the performance, as she’s been fighting illness all week in the run-up to the show: “To be honest I was worried about my voice and condition, and wasn’t really thinking about whether we’d end up second or third or tenth.”

The star-crossed singers’ draw in the running order had raised concerns about their chances of success and during the jury voting those concerns looked justified. Koit & Laura only managed to place fifth with the jury, but pulled it back in televoting, and went on to storm the superfinal, knocking Kerli and Rasmus Rändvee out in the process.

I must share what I heard from a video on the portal Delfi, where kids commented on songs (before the final) and about Verona they said: “They seem to be really worried. I don´t know what their problem is though. But I think they must be homeless. By the end of the song, I think they managed to buy an apartment.” now tell me if that´s not a better interpretation? Maybe Koit and Laura should dress up like homeless people and end their song on the balcony of a luxury villa? btw thank you for using the correct dotted letters,… Read more »

OH, and I forgot. I’m glad in Estonia it’s all about “power to the people”. Great to see the winner of the televote actually winning.

Rasmus Rändvee gets first place for the most awesome name. It’s so awesome to pronounce. I want him to win some time in the future. I am ambivalent about Sven Lõhmus- songs, generally speaking. I like the fact that he has a lot of different ideas and tries out stuff, but none of his songs quite get me there in the end. I might like parts of his idea and approach but feel like somewhere it all went wrong, in the execution. A lot of my criticism stems from clumsy lyrics, which seem to be THE constant in all of… Read more »

It is funny how many esc fan and fan from this bloggs don t like their song and almost hated them. They win only thanks to televote in superfinal with 100 % televote. In frist round of voting, they got so small points from juries and only thanks to televote they got ticket to superfinal with other 2 songs.

I’m still confused about why so many people hated “Verona” once it won Eesti Laul selection recently. Maybe if Koit and Laura change the staging a bit for Kiev, then hopefully those haters would learn to show some respect to Estonia’s entry.

I like their song, but they need to change Laura’s hair. Now she looks like Chewbacca, especially her silhouette in the beginning. With a slightly more exciting staging this could make the final. Good luck!
