pedro goncalves poll winner festival da cancao (1)

Olá, olá! After months of build-up and a concerted effort to turn its Eurovision track record around, Portugal‘s national selection Festival da Canção 2017 comes to an end tonight. While we’re getting ready to enjoy the three-hour long show with tones of saudade, glitter and Portuguese fabulosity, we’ve paused to gather our readers’ opinions.

Over the last week, we asked you to vote for your favourites in our poll. You cast a total of 1,717 votes and we have a result. Our readers want Pedro Gonçalves to be Portugal’s entry for Kyiv! He amassed a total of 561 votes, which means he’s the favourite option with 32.67% of our voters. He also happens to be the only act who will sing in English. Will he “walk away” with the trophy tonight?

1. Pedro Gonçalves – “Don’t Walk Away”

In second place, we find the Wiwi Jury favourite, Salvador Sobral. His melancholic entry “Amar pelos dois” won the hearts of 531 of you — or around 31% of the overall vote.

2. Salvador Sobral – “Amar pelos dois”

And from the Wiwi Jury favourite we move to the Wiwi Jury’s least favourite entry Viva La Diva. That diva Kika and her two counter-tenors are your third favourite to win. They received 185 votes, or around 11%.

Festival da Canção 2017 poll results

  1. Pedro Gonçalves “Don’t Walk Away” 32.67%  (561 votes)
  2. Salvador Sobral “Amar Pelos Dois” 30.93%  (531 votes)
  3. Viva La Diva “Nova Glória” 10.77%  (185 votes)
  4. Fernando Daniel “Poema a Dois” 10.19%  (175 votes)
  5. Celina da Piedade “Primavera” 7.16%  (123 votes)
  6. Deolinda Kinzimba “O que eu vi nos meus sonhos” 3.67%  (63 votes)
  7. Jorge Benvinda “Gente Bestial” 3.61%  (62 votes)
  8. Lena D’Água “Nunca me fui embora” 0.99%  (17 votes)

Festival da Canção 2017 – running order

  1. Jorge Benvinda – “Gente Bestial”

YESSSS!!!! I’m so happy with this result!!! 😀 Timeless, gorgeous music sung beautifully won tonight in Portugal. And the duet between Salvador and Linda at the end was the cutest thing ever. Portugal straight to my top 3! 🙂

Salvador is winner , first with juries and secod with televote. First with televote Viva la Diva , who finished on 5 place with juries.

Salvador sombral is NOT going to fare well in Eurovision with that song, as much as you will like the song, Eurovision fans in general will not appreciate it.

also, it’s ANOTHER ballad in a VERY ballad heavy semi final, it stands no chance

I’ll admit: I’m so exhausted from watching this event and I feel like 3 hours is way too long 🙁 , compared to other national finals (though Sanremo is also a pretty long event as well). Does anybody know when this event is going to end, specifically in Portugal’s timezone?

Portuguese results are on and the jury is buring Pedro Gonçalves and Fernando Daniel, the favs of the televote and giving 12 to Salvador Sobral… suspicius eh?? I want those saying OBjetivo Eurovision was rigged talking now!

I don’t remember Italy’s Sanremo Music Festival being this long. RTP should have had their anniversary its own television special. I get them wanting some synergy but it shouldn’t be this long.

* I mean, you DID mention 3 hours, but this still goes on and results aren’t in. I get this is also their 60th anniversary and there is really A LOT of stuff. Seams very nice, but it’s so late.

I believe that Wiwibloggs could have mentioned the fact that this intervals last extremely long into the night and that we get ready for no sleeping if we want to see results live.

I am watching RTV live right now. The only artist to get applause of the audience was Salvador Sobral. I believe in his victory soon. I could see tears in some people eyes.

I decided to become nicer when reviewing. Of course, I can dislike a song, but I never want to spawn hate or attack someone for their style or preference.

On that note, I still find Lena’s song one-note and it would, if chosen, be my semi-last, but I think it was enjoyable seeing Lena having a good time. Salvador’s voice is truly divine. While I think Pedro’s song lacks ‘it’ factor, kudos for courage to stand-up alone in his style. Best luck to all in Portugal!

I must be the only one who doesn’t like Salvador’s song at all x3 Boring, unmemorable for me and I find the performance quite creepy. Hoping for Pedro 🙂

A song being folkloric is never “dated”. A generic pop song however is.

If this was Sweden, None of these songs would even be Andra Chansen Material.
Imagine what this could do at Eurovision.

Gonna be another drama when he won’t win. Portugal is in shade though, so not that much.

OFF TOPIC: Imri Ziv’s song snippet has leaked. Sounds very upbeat, clubby and tropical.

ON TOPIC: I personally would love to see Pedro go based on the fact Portugal needs to take a risk and send an English song.

Please pick Salvador, Portugal! I’m not happy with viva la diva getting the last draw, but hopefully the jury ranks them sufficiently low that they aren’t a threat.

@Penguin: Most fans seeks uptempo songs to dance to because they are desperate with the lack of party songs and circus/joke numbers this year … nobody is willing to listen to anything with lyrics on much less lyrics that prevent your feet to stomp and demand your body to not move hyperactivity … It’s irrelevant if the song has meaning and emotion … again … they want the next uptempo rubbish to come along and entertain them all … it’s desperation … vocal qualities? Who cares? This is Eurovision today and the Ballad-syndrome that scares and angers the hell out… Read more »

@Jake: Don’t be fooled by those numbers … Loreen has had many views with Statements as well and we know what happened … it’s all the international fans feeling drawn to hear the music as many times as possible … but not necessarily the portuguese viewers themselves … Just don’t take those YouTube views seriously … dangerous trap!

@Paul D.: Doing Justin Bieber-esque music is itself a bullet you shoot in your foot from the get go … so why would he even stand a chance with such rubbish music choices? Bieber? Why not throwing up on stage? Offending fans? Or asking Ed Sheeran to come up with some substantial song to be in his album so that it does not sound all empty and meaningless? Wow what a powerful inspiration to draw from ..

@Héctor: You DO know that FC is actually taking place without Eurovision in RTP’s mind much less under the jury’s concerns but only in the fans’ desperate will to see Portugal in the 2 week gay extravaganza (a pride parade that gets to get broadcasted 3 times in a week) … RTP is not using FC to create a bridge towards Eurovision … that is the least of the contest’s ambitions … they want to showcase Portuguese music and promote it because that is part of RTP obligations as a state broadcaster. Eurovision is nothing but a last minute bonus… Read more »

Is Eurovision 2017 becoming the year of teen pop Bieber/Mendes-wannabees? Sweden? Iceland? Portugal? Only surpassed by an Italian gorilla? Seriously? Using Eurovision to extend Junior? Eurovision is 63 years old … have some respect for music and for your adult self … expect the best not the most disposable for heaven’s sake … it’s enough already all the rubbish we have in the real world of music.

I don’t think they stand a chance qualifying with ANY of these songs in semi final 1 which pains me to say since I think Portugal is always underrated

Hopefully not, his song is dated + it could be from anywhere in Europe + some of his vocal virtuosities are questionable and offputting.

The jury will probably bury Pedro. They want something in Portuguese and folkloric (aka outdated). Portugal is going to struggle to qualify anyway, so at least send a current decent song.

Pedro’s song screams last position in the semifinal, while Salvador has changes to pull out a surprise with her delicate song, like Gualazzi did back in 2011. Please Portugal, choose wisely. Pedro has ZERO chances to get to the finals

Antenglo : ”I once read Portugal wanted to make great effort to send a mind-blowing entry.”

The only effort Portugal needs to do is to open its mind a little more.
Hope for Pedro Goncalves, but that jury………..

I once read Portugal wanted to make great effort to send a mind-blowing entry. The point is that going thru this year’s Portuguese songs, it’s been hard for me to spot a prospective qualifier in Kyiv (taking into account powerful entries such as Denmark, Italy, Poland, Netherlands).
I really looked forward a strong Portuguese entry this year, so we could see Eurovision being held in Portugal for the first time in history.

But… what’s another year?

Completely disagree, Salvador song has so much emotions in it, it’s alive, it captivated me after few seconds, it’s unbelievable. And he has clearly better vocals.

Salvadors song is forgettable, like a disney song that got rejected by walt disney. Also his looks and mannerisms dont help either. Pedro has a catchy tune which will stand out amongst a semi final of ballads, and he’s cute, has carisma, should win. Please Portugal don’t do the same mistake as Estonia.

Colin

Salvador’s song is rather nice. I’d like to see him win. If it’s Pedro, Portugal is probably in big trouble. Pedro’s song next to other English pop songs, like Anja’s, Kasia’s and Timbelle’s, seams so forgettable and bottom-list material. Salvador would make Portugal more typical for them, but still more distinctive compared to others.

Gah, these songs would have been outdated 20 years ago. I want Pedro to win but I’m not gonna get my hopes up as the jury will probably screw him over. 🙁

Salvador has nearly 400,000 views on YouTube. There’s never been a Portuguese entry to get as many views in such a short amount of time. Pedro is still under 100,000. Salvador entry might be mermite but at least it’s not forgettable.
