Tamar Kaprelian 2017 Sareri Hovin Mernem Armenia Eurovision 2017

She represented Armenia at Eurovision 2015 as one sixth of Genealogy — a supergroup created to commemorate the country’s diaspora. Two years later, Eurovision’s Next Top Model winner Tamar Kaprelian is more connected with her heritage than ever.

Just last month, the New York based artist released her interpretation of “Sareri Hovin Mernem”, a traditional Armenian folk song. The cover is a collaboration with another Armenian-American singer-songwriter Larisa Hovannisian.

On releasing the track and its accompanying music video, Tamar writes that “we want to dedicate this to our loved ones, near, a little far, or in another dimension”. Shooting the clip in Yerevan, Tamar describes her interpretation of the song as “sparse” and “haunting”.

And the music video is indeed minimalism at its finest, while Tamar’s vocals are exactly as we’d expect: stunning.

We may not understand the language, but we feel every word.

Since representing Armenia in Vienna, Tamar has dedicated more and more of her career to the country. She developed Nvak, “a global foundation that uses music education to enrich the lives of young adults and gives them direct access to world-renowned singers, songwriters and music producers”, connecting Armenians to the international music industry.

This summer she is launching Camp TUMO, “a unique summer camp experience that gives teens from around the world the chance to take part in the TUMO educational program while discovering the culture and history of Armenia”.

And between all that, she still found time to marry her longtime boyfriend Chris Stang last autumn. The pair tied the knot during a traditional Armenian ceremony in the picturesque Normandy region of France.

The nuptials were even featured in the world famous Vogue magazineThe Anna Wintour helmed style bible paints a beautiful picture of Tamar’s special day, from the venue to her dress to the cocktail reception afterwards.
