On Wednesday morning Australia endured damaging winds from tropical storm Blanche. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Europeans were dealing with another force of nature with the same name: Belgium’s Eurovision 2017 singer.

Yes, as Europe headed to bed on Tuesday evening, the Euro-sphere rumbled with the release of Blanche’s song “City Lights” on Spotify. As the incredibly fresh, electro number appeared on social networks like VK, bookies slashed Belgium’s odds to win Eurovision 2017 from 100/1 (across all agencies) to as low as 3/1 at Betfred.

Just like the cyclone Down Under, Blanche wreaked havoc on the odds table.

Late on Tuesday she overtook Russia and Serbia to become third favourite to win. And by of 00:40 GMT on Wednesday morning, she had passed Sweden to become second favourite to win it all — behind only Italy’s Francesco Gabbani.

Will her “City Lights” blind the namaste gorilla and snatch a win for Belgium?

Eurovision 2017 odds: Belgium a potential winner? (March 8 at 00:40 GMT)

What about Greece and Australia?

Two other recent song reveals have made less of an impact on the odds table.

On Monday evening Greece decided that Demy will sing “This Is Love” at Eurovision. And within hours she had dropped from fourth favourite to tenth favourite, with William Hill putting her down at 20/1. Apparently it isn’t love as far as they’re concerned.

On Tuesday Australia revealed its singer — X Factor winner Isaiah Firebrace who will sing the ballad “Don’t Come Easy”.

He’s moved from fifth favourite to sixth favourite and has seen a slight widening of his odds, with Betfred moving him from 7/1 to 8/1.

What do you make of all this? Will the juries prefer Blanche over Italy? Who will slay the televote? Let us know in the comments box below.

Why all this hate about Italian entry?. We’ve always been on top 10 never winning, and so I really think we deserve to win ESC this year.

Rooting for Italy, Belarus, Portugal, Cyprus, and Australia. Not the biggest fan of Belgium’s song to be honest, but I might warm up to it. On the other hand, Italy’s song has definitely grown on me. Brilliant lyrics and composition, and probably my favorite of the entries so far.

Don’t see neither Belgium nor Italy winning

Greek entry has a happy vibe and an addictive melody that will help it rank higher than expected. Additionally the stage performance will -probably-be among the most memorable of the night, so don’t underestimate it…

I REALY LIKE THE GREEK ENTRY AND IT’S ONE OF MY FAVORITES! I THINK THEY WILL BE IN TOP 10 FINAL MAYBE TOP 5 JUST LOOK WHO IS BEHIND THE SONG! THE CHOREOGRAPHER IS VERY WELL KNOWN AND HAS PLACED IN TOP 5 WITH OTHER COUNTRIES BESIDES GREECE! HE ALSO DID HELENA PAPARIZOU IN 2005! I GUESS WE WILL SEE WHAT SUPRISES WE HAVE!

GREEK ENTRY GETS WORSE EVERY YEAR BUT WITH A STRONG PERFORMANCE WE MIGHT SEE IT IN FINAL TOP 10 OTHERWISE IT WILL TOP 20 AND 50/50 IF IT WILL EVEN QUALIFY! THINGS WILL CHANGE ALOT IT’S ONLY MARCH AND WE MIGHT SEE TOP 5 NOW BE ALOT LOWER!

A great song is one that gets better each time you listen to it. That was the case with Dami Im’s Sound of Silence last year. I still listen and sing along a year later cause it’s so good. That’s the same vibe I am getting with Blache’s City Lights. The more I listen the more I like. The opposite is true with Australia’s Don’t Come Easy. I hate it the more I listen to it. I was planning to root for Australia after their narrow loss last year but I can’t in good conscience support such an awful boring… Read more »

I think that the betting odds in such a contest, especially this early before the show, are not relevant at all. The most strange placing seems to have Belgium, there song is so simple… it’s just commercial, it really has no power. We’ve seen in the last year songs like ‘Miracle’ in 2014, or ‘Walk on Water’ in 2016 being high in the odds for their commercial aspect, while the real result wasn’t exactly what expected. I also think that Italy is no winning material, Sweden should maybe be low rated even for the fact that is hard to believe… Read more »

“All alone…” ten times in just 3 minutes… The song starts with the refrain, immediately reveals the best … Another mistake easily detectable.

Belgium has a song very monotone, repetitive with a poor lyrics and will receive very few votes from the jury.

Interesting tidbit.

One year ago, Poland was the #1 most likely to win Eurovision, and Ukraine was the 9th most likely. Also, Latvia and Cyprus were MORE likely to win the contest than Ukraine.

We really do need to wait and see the live performances before we can predict who will do well, or win.

So the almighty gorilla has suddenly found a competitor to throw it onto the mud … and it’s called music … that kind of music that Eurovision was urgently needing to gain credibility … because …and for the zillionth time … it’s a SONG contest regardless of what kind of kindergarten parade everybody has been trying to turn it into over the years … Belgium all the way!

I guess the winner of eurovision 2017 hasn’t been chosen yet. One thing for sure is that Italy will do pretty well like 2013/2015 (top 5 guranteed), but again no win.

Belgium is just boring, nothing interesting really, it will be forgotten between other songs. Italy is overhyped – it’s funny, catchy but after some time people will lose interest.

Belgium’s entry reminds me of avante garde which i’ve always loved. Nice to hear something outside the box at least once in a while. Btw, if that crap from Greece or Romania goes through the final and the magic of Salvador is eliminated then
Eurovision should be immediately suspended!

Eurovision is smelling West this year yas!
Italy, Belgium and Sweden (unless they awkwardly go with Mariette), all 3 will probably be Top 5, and deserverdly so (like in 2015.)
I still think Italy is stronger but we’ll see 🙂

I don’t see Blanche like Nina last year. This is song is much stronger.
I could see this more like Amir. Hot favourite because of studio version, but not a killer live, but still managed to be Top 10 cause the strenght of the song.
There’s no way Belgium is qualifying 10th and being bottom 5 XD

The only catchy , funny and cool song is Yodel It from Romania ! Europe don’t be stupid and vote for Romania song , please understood that Italy song is ugly and we don’t want a other ballad in 2017 like last year ok? Sorry Europe but Belgium song it’s not so special and why we don’t give all 12 points to Romania ? I’m from U.K and i love this song Yodel It and i think it will win this year 🙂

Good Luck Romania and Yodel It Europe 🙂 Bucharest 2018 !

One day later, the odds have already changed.

#1-Italy
#2–Sweden
#3–Belgium
#4–Australia

Also, Greece went up a bit to #9, and Estonia is now #10.

Bottom line: disregard all of this! It’s a long time ’till May, and we also have to see the liver performances.

Guys keep in mind that the live performance will make or break it, if Blanche nails those vocals just like Jamala did and draws you in with them it’s top 5 material.

ALSO, the videoclip will give it a boost in the betting odds aswell.

While early favourites fail to make an impact on the odds, Belgium comes up with a different and modern song. The thing is, this all reminds me of Croatia 2016. The song is overhyped, not that it doesn’t deserve top 10 placement, but it’s kind of repetitive. It also has to have a unique live performance to ensure the song progresses in the final, because i feel that Belgium is in its most difficult semi final in years! Hopefully they will pass but i don’t think it is wise to count it as a probable winner only hours after its… Read more »
