Omar Naber will represent Slovenia at Eurovision 2017 with his ballad “On My Way”. It’s the second time Omar has performed for his country at Eurovision — and the second time in Kyiv. In 2005, Omar’s song “Stop” placed 12 in the semi-final, narrowly missing out on qualifying. He will no doubt hope for a better result this time around.
“On My Way” was a big hit with Slovenian juries at the national final. The expert panel was impressed his emotional ballad of self-belief and defiance.
Omar tells of a difficult period in his life, where he’s made a decision to leave his loved ones in search of a better life elsewhere. He bluntly says, “Now I’m about to leave you all behind”.
The verses may sound a little grim, but the chorus is the cry of a man with a plan. Omar boldly asserts that he’s “On my way/I’m never coming back”.
And while he might sound like he’s happy to do it alone, singing “I cannot count on anybody else”, there is at least a mention of others. Omar sings, “Lights will guide you through the night”, implying that there’s at least one other person he’d like to have follow in his footsteps.
