She’s made us wait months for her Eurovision 2017 song.

But on Friday evening FYR Macedonia’s Jana Burceska finally revealed her song “Dance Alone”, taking us to the club in the process.

Channeling the best of Scandinavian pop, she’s delivered something modern that has the potential to become a massive radio hit all across Europe. Drawing on many eras — most especially the ’80s — this manages to feel very 2017.

Jana Burceska Dance Alone (Official Music Video)

The song is written by Joacim Persson, Alex Omar, Florence A. and Bobi-Leon Milanov. Joacim Persson worked with Macedonia before, when he wrote “Autumn Leaves” for Daniel Kajmakoski in 2015. Last year he was one of the writers behind Poli Genova’s “If Love Was A Crime”.

The music video shows an elderly woman travel back in time to her younger days via virtual reality. Despite the fact that Jana is singing about dancing alone, she has some male company in this virtual reality world. The clip is directed by young Russian director Sergey Zhelezko.

Today it was also announced that next to having some of Poli Genova’s songwriters with her, Jana has also recruited Ambra Succi as the artistic director for the performance in Kyiv. Ambra of course was the choreographer behind Poli’s epic performance last year. She also did the choreography for Loreen’s “Euphoria”.

About Jana Burceska

Jana came to fame in Macedonia in 2010, when she appeared on the first season of Macedonian Idol. There, she placed 5th, ending up as the highest placing female singer. Jana also participated multiple times at the Skopje Fest competition.

What do you think of “Dance Alone”? Will she bring Macedonia back to the final for the first time since 2012? Shout out all your thoughts on the wiwibloggs app, or in the comments section below!

This sounds like a Fame Monster reject or b-side. But miles better than that yodeling horrible disaster. I just hope she can sing this live. Comparable to Azerbaijan’s song. I usually loathe entries from the Former Yugoslave Republic of Skopje, but this is passable

That was positively surprising! Energy-packed dance entry, most likely the best amongst others (except smoothy ‘Origo’ which also remains close to dance area)! Clever made video, wouldn’t be bad even to have it’s core idea implemented at big stage. Though Succi’s surname brings a platform to see this entry as well-made by a singer first of all, which is also good.

Endearing video. Macedonia has a real chance of standing out in a positive way this year. To the final with the country carrying the most beautiful flag! I think a qualification is crucial for Macedonia this year, I want them to stay in the contest. They actually have quite a lot of good artists I would like to see participating. They did right by Jana and gave her a fighting chance. I guess it’s not easy when one of your biggest stars failed to qualify the year before. But this is a big step up. While I adored Kaliopi’s “Crno… Read more »

This wonderful, love the song and the video and I hope they retain the element of melancholy in how they present it on stage. Finally we have a run of good songs in a different style. Hopefully there will be more great songs chosen tonight and Russia rarely disappoint so it’s looking up at last.

This is like a modern version of I will Survive by Gloria Gaynor.
I am so happy that two constantly underrated countries, Portugal and Macedonia will hopefully get their glory this year, and with contrasting styles.

I think this is why we love Eurovision…

This is amazing, wow! And yes, I am Greek and totally believe that this should not only qualify, but go for the Top 10 even, beating out the record of 12th place with Elena Risteska. And I think the music video is so sweet with the older lady putting on the virtual reality and reliving her active youth! @Leaf, you make a good point about the internet. We were such good neighbors and then the back and forth arguing only made things worse. And now it’s sad that both sides just attack each other on Youtube etc. We have a… Read more »

Just wanted to make an article correction. “Bobi-Leon” Milanov (one of the songwriters of this track) is the artist nickname for Borislav Milanov, who also co-wrote “If Love was a Crime” as well as Tijana’s “In Too Deep” this year. So it’s not just Joacim Persson who was involved in both projects!!

Did not expect Macedonia of all countries to give us a contemporary dance track with relatively cringe free lyrics! After 4 years, they’ll probably make the final again.

One of the better entries this year. Don’t love it as much as “If Love Was a Crime”, but definitely one of Macedonia’s most memorable entries for ages, and ready to become a hit beyond Eurovision… if it gets into the hands of the right DJs at the right clubs this’d be a banger.

By her i must say

She’s on fire, she’s so hot
I’m no liar, she burn up the spot
Look like Mariah, I took another shot
Told her drop, drop, drop, drop it like it’s hot
Dirty talk, dirty dance
She a freaky girl and I’m a freaky man
She on the rebound, broke up with her ex
And I’m like Rodman, ready on deck
I told her I wanna ride out, and she said yes
We didn’t go to church, but I got blessed

This is my favourite video release from today! It’s easily the best ever FYR Macedonia entry (no disrespect to Kaliopi, who is also amazing).
I think ESC 2017 is turning into a great year when perhaps the usual front runners take a back seat, leaving room for some lesser-known Eurovision countries to do really well. FYR Macedonia – this is your best chance! Well done, and thanks to everyone who wrote the song and helped make the video as well – the other actress is superb. 🙂

Not acknowledging someone that pisses you off is the best reaction u can give them……. Also saves plenty of time, nerves and energy on your behalf.
It’s not like you are gonna fix the issue by arguing on youtube or forums.
People should really appreciate their time more.

Ok this entry is actually really good in many ways: song, lyrics, hook, catchy, theme, uplifting, motivational, cross-generational. I really liked the touching video, reminding everyone that older people were young like us once too, and here with us, that’s a touching well-thought message.

FYR Macedonia, well done!! 🙂

Another uptempo song … so many … how come isn’t anybody not complaining about the load of uptempo songs this year …. ohhhh right …. I forgot …. complaining in Eurovision is only valid for ballads … how could I forget that only uptempo music is welcomed … such a proud celebration of *cough cough* diversity …

Interesting one! Is it great and will it win? Nope. But I really like the low key, 80s sound. That Jana is beautiful as well… I think it will look great on stage.

Macedonia is in a very easy semi with not a lot of strong entries against them. Only the Netherlands, Hungary, Denmark and Belarus have strong songs in semi 2. Romania is dreadful but will of course qualify and Russia too, so that leaves pretty of room for a song like Macedonia’s to qualify.
