Slavko Kalezic space eurovision 2017

He’s one of the most original and outré performers of the year, known for his outlandish performances and extreme creativity.

And Montenegro’s Slavko Kalezic has poured all of those attributes into his Eurovision 2017 song “Space” and its skin-tillating music video.

A dance floor banger with strong disco influences, “Space” has enough energy to power a rocket out of this world — and to drive the heated sexual innuendo present throughout the song. He takes us on a funk-pop journey through his wildest dreams. And let’s just say they are very wild.

As he sings: “Wet dreams, wild nightmares, I surrender, come in to me from within, we can be as one in the sin. The spaceship is ready to blow, drunk in love, I’m gonna explode.”

Read the “Space” lyrics

Well, kaboom.

The music video is avant-garde art, taking us from the cosmos to a rocky, mysterious setting that looks straight out of Game of Thrones. At various points we see Slavko voguing in front of a spotlight, on a rock and against a metal cage, and wearing a series of bold outfits which include a floor-sweeping blue skirt, a pair of spray-on black trousers and leather pants.

Notice we never mentioned a shirt. All the while Slavko puts on a pec-tacular display, showing off his gym-honed body and abs of steel while popping and locking and letting there be no doubt that he does squats.

When he isn’t wearing a crown — which he does at one point — this king of our hearts flicks and flings his extra-long braid, which harks back to warrior traditions found in many ancient cultures.

Let’s just say whipping your hair back isn’t a phenomenon limited to Willow Smith.

In February Slavko revealed that he had worked on the song with legendary Eurovision composer Stefan Örn, who is known for writing several very successful entries for Azerbaijan — including the Eurovision 2011 winner “Running Scared”.

“Working with Stefan Örn was really amazing,” he told wiwibloggs in an exclusive interview. “I’m deeply touched by his energy dedicated to me. He couldn’t hide his enthusiasm about my singing and artistic being.”

“We gathered our art and I think we made a little Eurovision masterpiece, which will live on years and years after Eurovision. This is just the beginning of our collaboration and I can’t hardly wait to go back to Sweden.”

“I’m honoured to work with Stefan. He gave me so much beautiful and useful advice.”

What do you think of the song? Is it floating your boat? Do you think it’s Montenegro’s best entry ever? Let us know in the comments box below.

Regardless of his sexuality, this is just cheap and…recuctive? I respect his hustle but I don’t respect this cheap-ass song. Doesn’t mean because he’s gay I’ll just suddenly gravitate towards the song. This “queen” is a peasant compared to Conchita & Dana International. Cheap Kazaky knock-off

Yet another original and fun entry that will be in Semifinal 1! It quickly turns into the strongest semi of the two! Well done Montenegro!

It be interesting to see how the other ex Yugoslav countries vote for this because I may be wrong and I’m no statistician but historically don’t they award the most points to each other? Again I may be wrong but with these former Yugoslav states known for their anti-LGBTQI attitudes, how will they react? I personally think this track is a breath of fresh air.

Nope. I do not like it. I find the lyrics disturbing. Call my homophob, attack me as much as you want, but I find this kind of gays annoying. (I know is wrong to say this, sorry).

I guess again no final for Montenegro. I think they really need to change sth in the process of selection, even though I still believe they were totally robbed last year.

He doesn’t deserve to be judged by Western standards, remember that in Montenegro most LGBT have to stay in the closet. Slavko always had that ”show off” attitude, and its necessary when you must tell society that you exist. And he likes to be glamorous, this image of his was NOT created yesterday especially for esc.

Oh Crna Gora, whyyyy? 🙁

I was loving your last three entries (I liked Highway since I like alt rock), but this is making me cringe. The overt sexual lyrics, especially those directly referencing ejaculation are not ok. I don’t care gay or not, it’s a cringe-worthy lyric, just like the problem with My First Band with “Paradise”.

Lyrics aside, the song is at least ok. But just as I feel about Paradise, this just feels wrong, sorry!

What might be very interesting to keep an eye on is if there are any “complaints” to the EBU by the more conservative broadcasters. Remember that several of them complained about Conchita in 2014. Will a similar backlash happen against Slavko, or have they all learned to calm down since then?

Let this be a lesson to the eurofan crowd chanting in unison they can’t possibly suffer through yet another ballad… Anyway, I’m probably going to hate myself for this, but I actually don’t mind the song at all. Certainly not as dull and lifeless as what Greece and Israel sent, at the very least.

Why are some assuming people hate this song because this guy is campy and feminine? That’s just ONE annoying aspect about this song. I’m gay and annoyed (not ashamed, life’s too short to care that much) because not only is this song cheap and poorly produced but it’s clearly pandering to the gay/”yaaaas slay queenie!” crowd instead of using the talent he has to command . Gay or straight – it sucks. I really wanted to like this song and I was hyped I’d hear a banger because Slavko IS talented, but this is just cheap. I really hope he’ll… Read more »

@Polegend Godgarina: Another commenter reported that so called plagiarism too. The two songs start off similarly but they are actually quite different (exactly like Germany’s song and Titanium by the way). Actually, I think that song you posted is way better than Belgium’s, haha! 🙂

No plagiarism to report.

Dear Charles, i have the feeling that you are a little bit homophobe.
In my point of view, homophobes aren’t humans . They are gorillas.
Fortunately, this year in E.S.C. there is a perfect choice to vote for.
Buona fortuna a tutti !

@Polegend Godgarina; Your desperation to get rid of Belgium at any cost just to make sure your beloved gorilla wins this, is …. laughlable … and entertaining …. I never expected one’s 2015 bitterness turned into 2017 desperation was such a fun sitcom to watch ….

The gay-in-your-faces-b*** moment everybody here wanted … cliched and expected, cheap, generic, stereotypical, lame but more importantly … uptempo … God forbid the tempo to go down and traumatize some people here … Russia is going to “loooove” this … lol

I actually like the song – disco revival. The super low notes at the start are a bit offputting and probably not the best idea to appeal to a general audience, but whatever. Respectability politics will of course be invoked in the comments here and I’m past that. Good job Slavko

Hold the door, was definitely not expecting this! Don’t love the song, the lyrics are dumb and this totally sounds like something an ex RPDR alumni would release (video included). It is, however, awesome to see this kind of diversity come out of Montenegro. I don’t care that this is camp, we have a tonne of songs that are overtly hetero and CIS so it’s nice to have some diversity.

Good to have an openly gay artists, but this is really cheap and tacky. With this and last year’s entry one has to wonder how much is sex repressed in Montenegro. This is quite bad. My new last place (until Lithuania chooses tomorrow).

Ok, seriously, STOP PATRONISING THAT GUY.

The fact that he’s gay doesn’t mean he has to be held to different standards (it works both ways). Whatever amount of nudity won’t be able to save this song from being obnoxious, laughable and downright stupid.

Some of you are gonna pretend these lyrics actually are good and make sense.

His sexual orientation has nothing to do with it.

I truly don’t think it’s that bad or horrible. It’s your typical gay club song, this year’s “In The Disco”. A breath of fresh air among all ballad divas.Perhaps a bit to out there even for ESC standards and doubt it will work in this jury era but not bad at all.?
