Salam Eurovision, this is Baku calling! You wait for one entry and suddenly they all come at once. Azerbaijan and their act Dihaj — Diana Hajijyeva — will be slaying their way through the competition in Kyiv, with the song “Skeletons”.

The song is an epic electro-ballad which will chill y’all to the bone! After being announced as Azerbaijan’s representative back in December, Dihaj comes at us full-force with this entry. Will it keep up their perfect qualifying record?

AZERBAIJAN 2017: DIHAJ — “SKELETONS”

Keeping true to her experimental style, Dihaj is serving power, face and a beautiful blunt-cut hair style. The instrumental of the song delivers strong electronic vibes whilst maintaining a ballad-esque pace. It also compliments Diana’s killer vocals, which gently straddle the line between delicacy and strength.

The music video, much like the musical style, is experimental and moody. It oozes maleficence in every way with dark lighting, quick camera cuts and unique effects. The styling is memorable and mesmerising: it will be interesting to see if any of these ideas are bought to life on stage.

Dihaj has the support of a great team of songwriters and producers with extensive history in Azerbaijan’s Eurovision journey. “Skeletons” is written by Isa Melikov and Sandra Bjurman, who both worked with Ell & Nikki in 2011. Melikov also has experience working with Aysel and Russia’s Dima Bilan.

Bjurman, meanwhile, has also co-written “Hour of the Wolf” for Elnur in 2015 and “Drip Drop” for Safura in 2010. This team knows what is up!

What do you make of Azerbaijan’s entry for Eurovision 2017? Will this continue their streak of qualifying for the final? Sound off in the comments section below or via our app, available now on the App Store and Google Play.

I can’t stop listening to it since yesterday , what a modern and quality song it is. Video clip is also amazing and the singer looks so cool . I liked everything about Azerbaijan this year. Also it says the composer is Azerbaijani (though the lyricist is from Sweden) so from now on they must work with their own composers because this song is much more well produced than their previous entries.

I really like this song. For those of you who think the lyrics don’t make since “have my skeletons” or “I have my skeletons” means you have a dark past, which really fits with the theme of the song!

If this has good staging, it will be one to watch. Who says a song we would love to hear played on the radio/streamed over and over can’t win?

So I heard this at 2 am last night and clearly wasn’t impressed. Gave it another go today and actually really like it. I promise I’m not bi-polar. Given that this year is comparably weak, this is definitely one of the standout tracks.

Can someone explain why people think this sounds Swedish? For me, this sounds like an electro-ballad, which is what it is and it’s not like Sweden has a monopoly over the genre. I get that one of the composers is from Sweden, but totally disregarding the other author is downright disrespectful. Chances are the composer with a bigger name did less work, cause that what usually happens in the music industry.

Hmm, i wonder, how much they paid Sandra Bjurman just to put that Azeri coauthor officially by her side? Did they double the price?
Look how happy is everyone.. especially the Azeris. ‘You see! Our composer!’)) As if this song doesn’t sound completely Swedish))
As if Sandra Bjurman didn’t do anything.
As if the record producer isn’t Swedish, as if the dancers and the back vocalist wouldn’t be the Swedes))
About the song. It’s not bad.
Voice. I don’t like it. Her live performance will be saved, as usual, by Swedish b.v. girls.

Just waiting for the sockpuppets here to praise their entry in capitals, which will probably start after Artvik releases her song. 😛

@Charles wtf are you talking about? I have not said I wanted Italy to win as I need to hear all the songs first. What is clear to me is a truly loathe that yodeling song. As for those 3 Tenors, I couldn’t care less about them: I would have preferred Polina to win hence my name. Get it? I don’t know what you’re smoking or if you lack comprehension, but stfu

I’m liking this: her vocals & the somewhat edgy production is on point. The English lyrics are just horrible. At least this is a step up from that vocally challenged wench called Samra. I just hope this is also good live. For me Azerbaijan is a mixed bag: I loved Drip Drop & Farid, the rest are unlistenable. So this song is on the right direction, much better than yodeling

@Martin: Poor naive Martin … if you really want to understand true shade, snatching wigs and dragging a b**** down, then desperate Polina LadyGagarina-whatever-wannabe for a gorilla to win the competition as an act of revenge for the 2015 3 Arrogant Tenors massive televoting, is not the best way … The Legends Panel on YouTube make a much better work at that and that is not even real or trying to win Eurovision. But honey, if you dare or have the audacity to come for that adorable gorilla … you can bet Polina will come for you the same way… Read more »

Good but not specially memorable, same as this year’s ESC is. I’m missing some typical Azerbaijan’s sounds and intruments in the song, thath would make it better and more representative becaus this could be any country. Qualify? For sure.

Very very good entry from Azerbaijan. Maybe Too much classy for esc thats why it will not get enough votes lol. I am also glad to see that this year they worked with an Azerbaijani composer. Good luck to cool and sexy Diana in Ukraine.

It’s a shame that this song was released after F.Y.R Macedonia and Belgium’s song. Now it is generic and pales in comparison with the Belgian.

Isn’t she singing “HAD my skeletons”? That would make more sense considering the rest of the lyrics.
Listen to the beginning of the first chorus. She is clearly not singing “I’ve”.
Listen to the last phrase of the song. She is clearly not singing “hide”, but rather “had”.

So for the purposes of clarity, here are the actual lyrics: Standing in a mirror lane wondering what to do Another day and gravity’s got, got another hold of me I never dreamed that this could be happening, not to me But if he came falling down falling so hard, I started believing Now I’m into daydreams Amazed by thorn jeans Deep into high extremes When I’m with him it’s fantasy We’re just like alchemy Oh I feel ready Have my skeletons [I can only trick you once, bad boy] Have my lungs, my millions [Talk is cheap don’t speak… Read more »

I kind of like the heavy beat, its different. But something caught my attention with her singing. Her English doesn’t seem to be very good. And that might explain why the backing vocalists are so loud here. Expect Azerbaijan to drop a fortune in the staging to fix that just like last year.

A little disappointed by this song. It’s good that Azerbaijan didn’t go back to having a generic pop song written entirely by Swedes, but this still feels kind of safe. The verses have a nice, dark, sound to them, but the chorus really sounds safe, catchy, but considering what Dihaj is known for, this is a bit of letdown. Overall, this feels like Azerbaijan finally realized that “experimental” tracks were popular, but they still didn’t want to take as much of a risk as Belgium. I will give them points for finally having an Azerbaijani songwriter (though I still wish… Read more »

The last few days the songs we listen to are kind of similar (Azerbaijan, Belgium, FYROM, even Australia)
They are modern, so 2017, with electro beats and beautiful voices.
But my favourite song of these is Belgium. This song has grown on me. It’s so beautiful!

About Azerbaijan: promising starting, a bit dissapointed with the verse, I really liked the chorus. And Dihaj is great at singing. I can see a great performance on stage. I like this.

One of worst song from Azerbaijan. We have drip drop now we have drum drum .They will go to final, only thanks to juries , who overrated Azerbaijan and some others country every year.

Good chorus, well sung. Elevates the song that reminds their own entry from last year. It was dissapointing to hear that Dihaj and band were somewhat forced out from creation process. Not a stand-out for me.

Another great song! These last days are improving this year’s contest. Azerbaijan goes straight to my TOP 5 for the first time (I’ve never liked any Azeri song before…). Belgium, Azerbaijan and Macedonia have amazing songs in a current style, the three outstand in its different way. Hope the remaining songs are even better!

Rigth now, my Top 5 is the following:

1. Belgium
2. F.Y.R Macedonia
3. Latvia
4. Azerbaijan
5. Italy

To anyone thinking Italy had it all… we have some high-level competion here!

Maybe there’s a silent apostrophe, so “I’m a skeleton’s”. She means she belongs to a skeleton.

Anyway, grammar completely aside, I really like it. Azerbaijan will certainly get through, although they would probably get through even if they made us watch a plastic bag on a stick with a wind machine for 3 minutes.

Honestly sounds like for the first time Azerbaijan didn’t commission a song with Eurovision in mind. This is def current and radio friendly but doesn’t even compare to the stuff Azerbaijan has sent in previous years that have followed the Eurovision success formula down to the last detail. Maybe this will grow on me but right now I’m pretty disappointed. I’ve like pretty much every Azeri entry since 2009 and have a feeling that strike might come to a close this year. Cant wait for Polegend Godgarina to weigh in. Somebody tell me who that queen is, I need to… Read more »
