scared of the dark steps lucie jones

It’s the comeback of the year so far. UK band Steps are making their return in a big way this week, with new single “Scared of the Dark”. With flashes of their old pop brilliance with subtle changes to their sound, it’s drawn rave reviews. They even occupied the top spot of the UK’s iTunes charts, knocking Ed Sheeran of first place.

But some people aren’t just happy about their chart success. It seem many people think the song could have led the UK to Eurovision success as well. Numerous people on social media since the song’s debut wish that Steps were going to Kyiv — and not Lucie Jones.

Steps — Scared of the Dark

Now, just to put the brakes on things a little bit here: obviously, the UK has already made its decision for Eurovision 2017. “Scared of the Dark” is also just too long to be entered anyway and would require some serious cutting, which might hurt the track overall.

Not only that, but Steps just are not interested in going to Eurovision. Whilst member Ian ‘H’ Watkins is “desperate” to take part, the band told The Sun they’ve turned it down multiple times. Saying the contest is “too political”, they also say:

“For us, because we’ve got such a lovely legacy and we’re so proud of what we’ve achieved, it’s like, we wouldn’t push any votes up for being there and doing that, and we enjoy it as a competition to watch but to actually be a part of it, I don’t think it would do anything for us. It’s massive and it just gets bigger every year”.

Not to be overshadowed by the group’s return though, the UK’s actual entry Lucie revealed the new version of her entry, “Never Give Up On You” last night:

Lucie Jones — Never Give Up On You

The revamp too has gone down well on social media, which makes us wonder: if y’all could choose, which would you rather see in Kyiv? Well, you can let us know in our poll of course:

I think the whole steps for Eurovision suggestion is being driven by vile fat forty somethings who can’t move on. Girls this dross music died in 2002 along with your Waistline. Let’s not have modern Eurovision dictated to us by dinosaurs.

This article is quite disrespectful towards Lucie. Shouldn’t Russia send a new Polina or Sergey song? Shouldn’t Sweden send Zara Larsson with a banger?

Lucie is working so hard, don’t drag her. Quite a cheap move tbh

IDK why british are so full of cr*ap when talking about their entries, srsly, Lucie Jones works for me I heard part of the revamp and I was pleasantly surprised. Yes I agree is not a winner but it isn’t a bad song at all, she has impecable vocals and a great style that suits a ballad. Then we have the case of Steps (A band I never heard of, even though my fav radios are from UK), that people say, say they should’ve gone instead of Her. Then why ON EARTH didn’t they presented themselves as a probable act… Read more »

Well, Estonia’s entry “Verona” can serve as a Steps substitute.

Hold on, people, this revamp version deserves a top 10 this year.
Damn, I didn’t expect this, I think I love now the song, the melody builds a better atmosphere and her live vocals will explode, that’s how to improve a song.

This is so dated and the Uk has a modern song with an excellent singer in Lucie, you show em girl.

The first thing I thought when I heard the song during the week was, this would be great for Eurovision! To be fair to Chris, his article is reflecting what people thought and expressed on social media. No negativity at all towards Lucie. In fact, the results of the poll should be a great boost to her. She is an incredible singer with an average to good (but now nicely polished song), and is possibly gonna better Molly’s 2014 result. Stop bashing the article guys, it’s harmless, hypothetical, and entertaining food for thought for us Eurovision loving weirdos. Thanks Chris,… Read more »

I’ve been listening to a bit of Steps today, after hearing a lot about them, and I like this new song – but some of their old hits are much better! Last Thing On My Mind is my favorite so far. I’m glad they’ve made a comeback.

This new song sounds a lot like an Alcazar album track. Good, but not a classic.

This article isn’t very nice to Lucie. She’s working very hard to send a good song to be proud of. Steps have been famous for years and years and of course will put out a “better” song, but what does that have to do with Lucie?…. We should be supporting her 100% this year, not telling her that there are “better” artists than her 🙁

I could say “hey, why doesn’t France send David Guetta, he’s so much more famous” but I don’t because that would just be mean to Alma.

Why not put an article out ‘Ed Sheeran or Lucie? Who do you prefer for the UK?’ because I hear he has a single out too. Lol this is silly.

LOL, if this poor article is not a backstabbing attempt, I don’t know what is is. And the steps song is beyond dated and awful, and their success in the British charts only goes to show the bad taste of the Brits.

Okay, time for a few explanations: 1. Most people in the UK will have heard a Steps song, unless they are under 18. The songs were cheesy, but very widely “accessible” and popular. So I wouldn’t worry about Lucie Jones being personally insulted – she was probably a big fan of Steps and would love to see them at Eurovision too! 🙂 (Maybe someone should ask her?) 2. The only reason the UK’s selection sent Lucie in the first place was because of how our jury voted. Our jury were made up of a group of Eurovision Club members, who… Read more »

What the UK public and press thinks can “win” Eurovision: ’90s has been band singing something vaguely reminiscent of ABBA…

It’s like they are not even listening to what other countries are sending anymore…

I actually think Lucie’s song is one the UK’s strongest in a long time. She’s classy and has a beautiful voice. Probably won’t get a high placing, but definitely a great entry.

This article is unnecessarily mean. It’s rare the UK send a decent act and I’m proud of this one. OF COURSE it won’t win but can’t you let us enjoy our song?

Loved steps in the 90’s and this song is a blast from the past (in a good way) but it is not right for today’s Eurovision.

Now stop being petty!

I get really fed up when all we can discuss I the UK is which washed up act could represent us. The reformed Sugababes, Alexander Burke, Geri Halliwell, the GEM (Spicegirls), Alexandra Burke… the list goes on. The BBC may not have learnt anything but it shows you lot haven’t either. Washed up acts don’t work. Blue, Bonnie, Englebert. All failed to make a good go of it. And none them had had a hit 5 years before taking part. Obviously Bonnie and Englebert much more further back. There is a reason they don’t have a career anymore. Leave them… Read more »
