After a record breaking televote it was Svala Björgvins who won Söngvakeppnin 2017 by a landslide with her electro-pop song Paper. She will represent Iceland at Eurovision 2017 in Kyiv this May.

Svala Björgvins is already an established artist in her home country Iceland and now she is ready for the big Eurovision stage.

The song is very personal to Svala as the lyrics are about the inner battle she has had with herself through the years, as she has been struggling with anxiety since she was a teenager.  The song is about the hard relationship one can have with oneself, how you shouldn’t be ashamed of it and how important it is to open up to others about your inner struggle.

The song uses paper as a key metaphor to describe her emotional state. She sings, “Paper, you cut right through, I’m stuck like glue to you”.

“Paper” lyrics – Svala (Iceland, Eurovision 2017)

You’re under the water
Trying to pull me under
I reach for you
I reach for you

You can throw it all at me
I won’t give you up
I can handle all your pain
Take it as it comes
I love you right
But you make me feel like

Paper
You cut right through
I’m stuck like glue to you
Paper
Your darkness pulls
I lose control again

Drawing every bit of my truth
Colour me in with your blue
Paper
You cut right through
A thousand words for you

I know I wasn’t a part of yout plan
I know you think that you’re being a man
Tell me to leave you alone
Tell me I would be so better off
But you don’t understand
I can’t leave you
baby
I can’t leave you

But you make me feel like

Paper
You cut right through
I’m stuck like glue to you
Paper
Your darkness pulls
I lose control again
Drawing every bit of my truth
Colour me in with your blue
Paper
You cut right through
A thousand words for you

Paper
You cut right through
I’m stuck like glue to you
Paper
Your darkness pulls
I lose control again

Drawing every bit of my truth
Color me in with your blue
Paper
You cut right through
A thousand words for you
