They might have been number two at Slovenia’s national final EMA, but duo BQL are enjoying the next best thing. Brothers Rok and Anej Piletic were presented with the prestigious SLOTOP50 BUM award, in honour of their single “Heart of Gold” being the most played single in the week after its debut on the Slovenian top 50 chart — the first time this has ever happened.

BQL beat off stiff competition for their BUM. While the brothers reached No.1, the top ten had international hits from artists such as Clean Bandit, Ed Sheeran and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man.

But it was “Heart of Gold” that got got the most plays in its release week — the first time this has ever happened in the SLOTOP50, to either a Slovenian or international artist. Chart organisers SAZAS were so impressed they created the BUM award — meaning “boom!” — to honour BQL’s achievement.

Raay: Also got a BUM

Also honoured was the song’s co-writer and producer Raay, as one half of Maraaya. He was on hand to also receive a BUM.

BQL were one of only six Slovenian artists with songs in the top 50 that week. One of them was fellow EMA finalist Nika Zorjan.

She joined in the celebrations, as her single “Fse” had debuted at No.6 in the top 50 — the second-highest ranked song by a Slovenian artist.

EMA winner Omar Naber’s song “On My Way” reached No.14 in the SLOTOP50 the following week.

Last month at the grand final of Slovenia’s national selection EMA, BQL won the televote with an overwhelming majority. However, the juries were less impressed. They scored the brothers in fourth place and gave top marks to Slovenia’s 2005 representative Omar Naber.

But while Omar will be returning to Kyiv in May, it looks like BQL will be enjoying their own kind of success back home.

Poor Slovenia. From having a Potential Top 10 to eventually have a potential last place in their semi. Juries are the worst

BQL should have won. This is why I don’t like regional juries. Its such a ‘BUM’mer they didn’t win. *insert confused emoji- can’t decide whether to laugh at that name or cry due to the jury’s stupidity’*

This would’ve been a much better option in my humble opinion than the dross they sent…

Oh wow. I’m happy for BQL – they were my favourites from Slovenia this year. Well done. 🙂
(Now somebody should really re-name that award.)
