Last year in Stockholm, she heard her shadows calling and quickly became a fan favorite, using shadow projections to create a mystical atmosphere on stage. Now, Greta Salóme has shown that she’s not afraid to step out of those shadows, with her latest release “My Blues”.

With a name like “My Blues”, one might expect the track to be melancholy or dull, but instead, Greta shows off her aggressive side. The song’s got everything it takes to be hard-hitting: over-saturated vocals, a heavy beat, bold brass, and Greta’s classic harmonies to round it off.

The song, which Salóme gave us a preview of at Söngvakeppnin two weeks ago, is themed around finding one’s inner strength. The Icelandic violinist says she’s been “hiding in plain sight and feelin’ just alright.” Beyond that, “My Blues” takes on what it means to wait for someone and just have to “dance away your blues” without them.

Easy one arm shoulder press for @thorbjornsson ????????????

The pre-chorus line–which Greta repeats numerous times–says “If you could only see me now,” and true to her word, she makes it hard to take your eyes off of her in the newly released music video. Joined by Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, most famously known for his role on Game of Thrones, Salóme works her way through a dimly lit gym. By the end of their workout, there’s no question where her chiseled muscles came from.

Beyond the muscles, though, there’s a reason Greta’s chosen to work out with The Mountain — known as one of the world’s strongest men. The song’s all about crashing and burning, hitting the ground, and feeling your heart race, and what encapsulates these more than pushing the boundaries of her physical limits?

Greta’s busy March

“My Blues” comes in the wake of Salóme’s violin-singing-extravaganzas with Alexander Rybak, in Akureyri and Reykjavik.

Before that, she led a seminar for children who play string instruments, and just two weeks ago she absolutely killed her performance of “My Blues” at Söngvakeppnin. Talk about a packed schedule!

Second day of seminars done! Loved every minute I got to spend with these geniuses ???????

Highs and Lows of Eurovision

A two-time representative of Iceland at Eurovision, Greta knew what to expect coming back into the spotlight in 2016. With shadow projections up her sleeve, a ensemble of backing vocalists, and the modern yet tribal sound of “Hear Them Calling,” she was thought to be a real contender in Stockholm. To the devastation of fans across Europe, however, she failed to even qualify from her semi-final.

To no surprise, Greta clinched our Vision Music Award for “Most Wronged,” but even her shock and probable disappointment didn’t hold her back from rocking the stage at the Wiwi Jam.

Since Eurovision, she’s pumped out numerous singles and covers, including “Seven Nation Army”, “Row”, and “Running Out of Time”. With each, she’s proven her musical flexibility–weaving between acoustic, electronic-folk, and orchestral balladry. With all these music releases, watch out for an upcoming album!

Iceland in 2017

Svala, the winner of Söngvekappenin 2017, will get the chance to fly the Icelandic flag in Kyiv, come May. With her song “Paper”, she’s hoping to regain Iceland’s spot in the final, after missing out since 2014. You can follow Svala’s journey to Eurovision here on wiwibloggs.

Now, what do you think of “My Blues”? Does Greta have you dancin’ away, or are you left still “tryin’ to find your beat”? Let us know in the comments below, or share your thoughts with the wiwibloggs app!

Iceland qualified in 2014.

Apart from that though, is there anything Greta can’t do? She’s a singer, instrumentalist, songwriter, teacher, strong-woman….
