Kristian Kostov bulgaria beautiful mess

In March Bulgaria revealed that their Eurovision 2017 song “Beautiful Mess” would be a story of contrasting pictures and characters, both on the dark and bright side of life.

And on Friday we got a hint of what they might mean with the release of Kristian Kostov’s official music video.

The high concept video fits well with the song’s themes of perseverance and hope, which BNT previously outlined in a statement sent to wiwibloggs.

“The story here is quite simple – it’s about love,” they said. “But we don’t mean love in the sense of feelings between two persons, but rather love for humanity and friendship, as both are an integral part of the core values of the Eurovision Song Contest.”

“The main character is a youngster who is facing a world full of darkness that he is living in and is searching for an oasis of light for him and the people he is willing to fight for. Our project this year is dedicated to all young people, urging them to define themselves and fight for the values they believe in.”

Kristian Kostov's #euovision2017 music video is out. Here's how his team describe it: "A total of 35 actors took part in the shooting process that lasted more than 20 hours. The video is a co-production between Virginia Records and Symphonics, who are two of the three producers of this year’s Bulgarian participation at Eurovision, along with BNT. The famous Bulgarian music video producer Liusi Ilarionov is the director of the video and Andrey Andreev is the cameraman. They both worked with Kristian in the past. Milen Dankov, a well-known choreographer in Bulgaria, was in charge of the video's concept. He also worked with Kristian before – both when he was a contestant on X-factor and during the filming of the official video to his debut single – 'Ne Si Za Men'." #eurovision #eurovisionsongcontest

A post shared by wiwibloggs (@wiwibloggs) on

The message comes through clearly in the video, which sees Kristian at the centre of a literal mess, with countless bodies lying lifeless on the floor.

But amid the apparent catastrophe there is life and hope, as Kristian rises and calls on his soldiers to join him.

Explosions follow, flags are raised and, amid an atmosphere of rebellion, Kristian and his crew seem to find peace. As he sings: “Even in the line of fire, When everything is on the wire, Even up against the wall, Our love is untouchable.”

The video, which seems to have taken inspiration from Woodkid’s “Iron”, has a Game of Thrones vibe, which is fitting given the series’ focus on redemption and strife.

What do you think? Are you loving the cinematic video? What do you make of the tree branches, horses and birds — and what do you think they all symbolise? Let us know in the comments box below and by using our wiwibloggs app, available on Android and iOS.

Inspired? The video was ripped off! Why is everyone denying this? There’s a Tumblr post going around comparing Woodkid’s Iron and Kostov’s Beautiful Mess. The shots are too similar not to be called a rip off.

Here we have our winner. Im not saying he is my winner but whoever thinks he is not gonna win, is just blind. Besides Italy does not want to win and host, Bulgaria does.

About the symbolism in the video I would say that the raven usually means Death, Destruction, Evil and falcon or eagle – Victory, Spirit, Supreme power… Pigeons are of course the universal symbol of Peace. And I see Kuker warrior – Bulgarian traditional figure, who battles the evil… The symbol of the black horse is mixed for me – with the black rider it seems to be the dark side again, which time is over… Without the rider I totally love the sadness in the eye of the horse!!! Than I see allusion to the famous Repin’s painting ‘Barge Haulers… Read more »

2017 – the year of Brexit and Trump, when our values are being tested by liars, rude and greedy people. This is the year when Eurovision fans would seek for a song that brings hope and normality in times of sorrow. It’s not time for fun now, so Italy may wait for another year to win the contest. This year’s Bulgarian entry offers it straight to the point and people may place it first imho.?

People, STOP saying Kristian is too young.

Blanche from Belgium is also 17 years old, yet I don’t hear people blathering about her age.

Colin,
Very good point – interesting indeed: “Is is just me, or is it quite odd how 17-year-olds sing about eternal love and devotion, while 42-year-olds sing about randomly hooking-up in a disco? Ha ha, total reverse reality” 🙂
What I love about Kristian is exactly the depth in his style of singing. And people who love Salvador but do not appreciate Kristian, for sure are just not familiar with his truly amazing and emotional singing – live! Hopefully he’ll proof this soon on the stage…

Can’t believe people are commenting negatively on his looks. He’s only 16 years old ffs! Not that anybody of any age should receive negative comments from others about how they look. Some people are just horrible. =(

Kristian is definitely a lot more handsome than I was when I was sixteen, and he’s a good signer too.

His song wouldn’t be in my top ten this year but it is quite good (it reminds me of Troye Sivan) and I’m sure he’ll do well in May. Best of luck to him and Bulgaria. =)

Kristian is very nice guy with a very good voice and song. I remember him from Russian Voice Kids, one of the favourites. Swedish song is fine, but I prefer to see it in my jogging playlist rather than in the Eurovision winners playlist. I suppose either Italy or Bulgaria should win this year. But we have to see stage performances. I love Italian song, but I hate that monkey in the performance. I’m fine with swedish song. At least, if Robin would win, we are going to have good show next year. I suppose this year show won’t be… Read more »

I can’t believe what’s going on in this comments here. Really, bashing a kid because in your opinon he is not “hot”. Seriously, what’s wrong with you guys.
The video is one of the best I’ve seen this season. I feared that it might be a bit over the top, but it is very minimalistic and conceptual. Also, his song is great and the voice is just incredible.

Yes ESJC is fine because they deal with kids and adolescents and respect the amount of time they can work and that is supervised. ESJC participants don’t do international touring or promotion, TV shows, interviews for weeks, videos, etc etc.
I don’t care if he wins or not. I would be actually very happy to have Sofia as the 2018 host. I’m against child abuse that’s all. “A child is every person under 18 years of age” Bulgarian Child Protection Act

You say that kids are not supposed to work, but earlier you were sending Kristian to Junior ESC. So JESC is fine? Or you just don’t like that Kristian is a contender for a good place?

I hope that Kristian will NOT try to to something to his teeth, it’s a blessing to have strong, healthy teeth, don’t put that at risk.
About the video looking cheap because of the tree…why is that cheap? Would’ve looked expensive if it were a plastic tree?
Reading the comments, it’s so clear that here is a bloodbath of fans from France, Italy, Sweden, Portugal and right now they are a little busy with a mutual enemy Bulgaria.

It’s a good song and I like his voice, but when I see him performancing, somehow I can’t connect with it, It’s not that he is young… it is rather that he looks like a kid :/ anyway I Think he will do well again for Bulgaria, top 10 for sure

And a comment for the petty minds commenting on his teeth. If you look at this performance and all that you see and find noteworthy is the gap in his teeth… you have a serious gap in your soul… and this is THE REAL PROBLEM.

This video adds a whole another dimension and makes the song stand out. This is a work of art, in the best sense of the phrase… possibly too good for Eurovision. Just brilliant, especially coming from a small country. I think stylisticly this is better than the best of Armenia, and Armenia has been creating masterpieces year after year.
Kris winning is one of those thing that are too good to be true… but regardless of where this places, Bulgaria is making history.

There’s already Eurovision Junior, right? What are kids doings in a competition made for adults???
One is singing he’s been burned too many times, dam you’re 17 you’ll never reach 30! The other one is already thinking that the world is a beautiful mess and the other one is afraid to lose it all in the danger zone.
Bulgaria, Australia, Belgium = inappropriate singers/songs.

Regarding a space between one’s front teeth:

In Syria, it is a sign of great wisdom.

In parts of Africa, it is a sign of great sexual prowess.

Regardless, it seems like it’s a good thing.

N.B. If anyone else just read (on Pink News) that the UK is withdrawing from Eurovision in 2019; it’s an April Fool’s joke. (I hope.) Don’t take it seriously unless the BBC says so on April 2nd. 😀

Don’t call him a winner until you hear him sing live. If this is how he truly sounds, then he’s in the top. But we don’t know his voice without autotune yet

Nice song, but it needs somebody with a little more emotional growth. Isaiah connects better in “Don’t Come Easy”. It will do well enough, but I doubt it will carry enough televote to match Poli’s placing from last year.

The song has a deep message but this guy has no charisma at all. What a pity! He should start his career in 6 or 7 years, with more maturity.
@ Stylianos H, I can agree with you, that the song from Portugal is out of this world, but here we should only comment on the Bulgarian song.

Can not pass the emotions of the Portuguese song. Salvador opens the mouth and the world stops!
Bulgaria has a good song for TOP5 but it’s one more that 6 months from now nobody wants to listen anymore. It can even win with the support of the Balkan bloc and east but it is a song to forget.

All the focus is on this young fellow. He speaks when he sings. People are underestimating some truly better singers in this competition. Time for Wiwi to write about those methinks, such as the other 17 year old male who actually sings when he sings, namely Isaiah. Plus, Isaiah’s going into this competition with more recognition. His first single “It’s Gotta Be You” is charting in 15 countries, with currently over 63 million streams on Spotify. Come on Wiwi, if you can report Robin Bengtsson getting engaged, surely can you write about that?
