UK’s Lucie Jones: “No matter what you’ve done, nothing prepares you fully for Eurovision!”

She’s a West End star who has turned heads in big budget productions of Rent and Legally Blonde. And on Sunday Lucie Jones dazzled yet again as she performed at the London Eurovision Party at the gorgeous Café de Paris.

The Cardiff-born beauty earned the right to represent the United Kingdom by winning the national selection Eurovision: You Decide. And ever since then she has been riding high, as she explained to wiwiblogger Chris ahead of her performance.

“It’s been mental,” she said. “It’s been so busy and wonderful. It’s been hard work, but it’s all been worked well. I’m having so much fun.”

A part of that hard work meant recording the revamped version of her entry, “Never Give Up On You“.

“It was kind of a conversation with the country. We were hearing from people that they loved the song and they thought we could go further with it. So we decided to tweak a few little things.”

Lucie said she loved all the versions of the song released so far. “It’s testament to how good the song is is that it works in different ways,” she said.

One of the writers of the song is Emmelie de Forest, the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2013, for whom Lucie had nothing but praise.

“She is so lovely. She just said to me, ‘Have fun’. It’s such a wonderful advice, such human advice from such a superstar. I was thrilled to meet her.”

Lucie’s previous experiences include The X Factor, where she was famously dismissed in favour of Jedward, and West End musicals Les Misérables, Legally Blonde and Rent.

“Eurovision is a complete animal of its own. No matter what you’ve done, it doesn’t prepare you fully for Eurovision, because this is crazy, this is amazing!”

“But what I’ve done has definitely helped me out on the way to get in here — to deal with this well. I’ve done so many wonderful things, I’ve been so lucky. This is just the pinnacle so far of what’s been a really fun career. I think I have to think of it that way, ’cause if I start thinking about how many people are watching it, I’d fall off my shoes.”

Lucie couldn’t reveal much about her staging — she’s got to keep it under wraps for now. But she did whet our appetite to learn more.

“All I can tell you is that it’s gonna be a really special moment, in a huge competition, on a huge stage. We’re gonna create something really special and I’m really proud of it already.”

Asked about the tweets she has been exchanging with Manel Navarro, she spilled the beans about her evening performance.

“We’re doing a duet this evening at the London Eurovision Party and it’s been so much fun rehearsing it. He’s so lovely and he’s so easy to work with. We’re having a great time.”

Lucie seems poised to make more than one friend at this year’s Eurovision: “They all seem so nice, everyone’s so complimentary of each other’s songs.”

To wrap things up, Chris presented Lucie with the I Love Lucie T-shirt — created by our Bulgarian designer Cinan — which she loved, although she says she “can’t wear a T-shirt that says I love myself.” We love her humility!
