She’s a West End star who has turned heads in big budget productions of Rent and Legally Blonde. And on Sunday Lucie Jones dazzled yet again as she performed at the London Eurovision Party at the gorgeous Café de Paris.

The Cardiff-born beauty earned the right to represent the United Kingdom by winning the national selection Eurovision: You Decide. And ever since then she has been riding high, as she explained to wiwiblogger Chris ahead of her performance.

“It’s been mental,” she said. “It’s been so busy and wonderful. It’s been hard work, but it’s all been worked well. I’m having so much fun.”

Lucie Jones interview at London Eurovision Party

A part of that hard work meant recording the revamped version of her entry, “Never Give Up On You“.

“It was kind of a conversation with the country. We were hearing from people that they loved the song and they thought we could go further with it. So we decided to tweak a few little things.”

Lucie said she loved all the versions of the song released so far. “It’s testament to how good the song is is that it works in different ways,” she said.

One of the writers of the song is Emmelie de Forest, the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2013, for whom Lucie had nothing but praise.

“She is so lovely. She just said to me, ‘Have fun’. It’s such a wonderful advice, such human advice from such a superstar. I was thrilled to meet her.”

Lucie’s previous experiences include The X Factor, where she was famously dismissed in favour of Jedward, and West End musicals Les Misérables, Legally Blonde and Rent.

“Eurovision is a complete animal of its own. No matter what you’ve done, it doesn’t prepare you fully for Eurovision, because this is crazy, this is amazing!”

“But what I’ve done has definitely helped me out on the way to get in here — to deal with this well. I’ve done so many wonderful things, I’ve been so lucky. This is just the pinnacle so far of what’s been a really fun career. I think I have to think of it that way, ’cause if I start thinking about how many people are watching it, I’d fall off my shoes.”

Lucie couldn’t reveal much about her staging — she’s got to keep it under wraps for now. But she did whet our appetite to learn more.

“All I can tell you is that it’s gonna be a really special moment, in a huge competition, on a huge stage. We’re gonna create something really special and I’m really proud of it already.”

Asked about the tweets she has been exchanging with Manel Navarro, she spilled the beans about her evening performance.

“We’re doing a duet this evening at the London Eurovision Party and it’s been so much fun rehearsing it. He’s so lovely and he’s so easy to work with. We’re having a great time.”

Lucie seems poised to make more than one friend at this year’s Eurovision: “They all seem so nice, everyone’s so complimentary of each other’s songs.”

To wrap things up, Chris presented Lucie with the I Love Lucie T-shirt — created by our Bulgarian designer Cinan — which she loved, although she says she “can’t wear a T-shirt that says I love myself.” We love her humility!

Rhingo is correct. Unfortunately most of the UK just want something to drink to and laugh at when it comes to the Eurovision Song Contest. But Lucie Jones is a very good singer; she looks very beautiful and she’s treating the contest seriously. Good for her, and good for the UK in spite of ourselves. 🙂

Last year I watched the contest with British friends of mine and they were very busy… deciding who was the sexiest singer XD In that moment I understood something: UK does not take ESC seriously and they don’t care in the least who will represent them. None of their good performers have any intention to deal with the contest and only new names and nobodies go. Lucie is the exception. She had some recognition even before the show and is actually good! As a performer she is flawless! I wish her song was a bit catchier however even as is… Read more »

She was amazing in London!
But, since the national final I knew she’s great live!
Good luck to the U.K.!

I think she will narrowly miss the Top 10 (because of the televoting), which is good for UK. But she still has a good shot to make it.

I suggest a forrest for Lucie’s background on Eurovision stage. Forrest is the year’s fashion, other countries have used forrest for their videos this year (Belarus, The Netherlands, Azerbaijan, Austria, Ireland…maybe some others, too). And last but not least, Lucie’s song was penned by Emmelie de Forest so…it resambles :))) Funny 😀

I like her head piece, she looks like a fairy, she will probably have a staging like Zoe.

” Since the introduction of the Big Four/Five, the United Kingdom and Germany have both finished last in the contest three times. The United Kingdom also has the fewest top ten results of the Big Five in the 21st century, but has achieved more top five results than Spain, having reached the top five in 2002 and 2009, while Spain has not reached the top five since the 1995 contest.” – by Wikipedia 4 Top 10 entries (#1 in 1997, #2 in 1998, #3 in 2002 and #5 in 2009) 8 Top 11-19 entries (#19 in 2006 & 2013; #17… Read more »

@Jeana I had a similar idea – that the bottom 2 or 3 of the big 5 have to go through the semi-finals the following year. I think that would ’cause enough fear that some of them would get off their asses and actually find something decent. That said, I do think the U.K will do better than expected this year.

@ Jeana – I see your point, but I have two words for you- financial contributors.
And that’s fair enough for me, why not? I’m from Balkan country and don’t have problem at all with that, that is life 🙂 But I agree with you they should definitely bring better songs, in the end that will improve and popularize whole event as a main goal.

aww she’s adorable! i was pissed when she was first selected but as time progresses and the revamp was released i can see how this can score well on eurovision final. i wish her all the best!

This is the punishment for the BIG5 countries, we never vote for them. Unless they come with something outstanding… Otherwise, no one votes and no one cares (even they don’t care for themselves to send better songs/acts)… They afford sending anything, they know they’re in the final no matter how crap their song is. Not that Lucie’s song is crap, coz it’s not. But it’s not a masterpiece, either. It’s just a nice ballad, nothing more, nothing less… but it’ll be stuck in the final (depends on what spot they’ll get in the running order of the grand final). But… Read more »

@ Eve

Yeah, I think that’s what I find “magical” about it. She doesn’t scream. The song is dramatic but she sings it with ease.

To all female performers- look at perfect example how ballad should be done, without annoying screaming, but still exciting! Amazing, this year the best ballad for me, well done Lucy <3

A very nice interview- I’m confident that Lucie will return the UK to the top 20 (or even top 15).

In my personal opinion, this is the UK’s best entry since 1998 (even though 2006 and 2014 come close). There is something “magical” about it that I can’t really describe. Lucie is a great singer, she is vocally flawless and she knows just how to add the right amount of drama to her performance. Not a winner, but a very strong effort that the UK can be proud of. I also like the fact that there is some touch of musical theatre to it. Since modern musical theatre originates in Great Britain (Gilbert and Sullivan), it’s actually one of the… Read more »
