The results from the OGAE fan clubs continue to roll in and the fan favourites of Eurovision 2017 are starting to become clear. Next to reveal their points in the OGAE Poll 2017 are OGAE Switzerland and OGAE Croatia. Both gave Italy their 12 points, which pushed Francesco Gabbani further into the lead. OGAE Croatia was the first country to award Iceland any points.

Both OGAE Switzerland and OGAE Croatia gave their 12 points to Italy and their ten points to Belgium. They join six other clubs who gave their 12 to Italy and three others who gave eight to Belgium. This has also confirmed Francesco Gabbani in the overall lead with 114 points, while Blanche follows with 85 points.

Switzerland and Croatia also gave their eight, seven and six points to Sweden, Estonia and France — though each in a slightly different order. Sweden, Estonia and France also take those places in the overall total so far with 73 points, 63 points and 62 points respectively.

Switzerland also rewarded Portugal with five points. This moved Salvador Sobral from 14th place overall into the top ten with 14 points.

Croatia was the first country to give Iceland any points. OGAE Croatia was impressed enough by Svala’s “Paper” to award it two points. This now makes a total of 24 out of 42 countries to have received points.

While the OGAE poll only reflects the tastes of OGAE members, it is considered to be a good indication of where the contest favourites may lie. Last year 30 countries received at least one point. Of the 11 semi-finalists who received nil points, only two qualified for to the final.

I think OGAE makes following Eurovision more interesting as it reflects preferences of a wide range of avid Eurovision followers from all European countries and makes us reach a consensus based on quality of songs and a song / performer’s fan and commercial potential and stage presence. It also reflects naturally local biases which also play an important role in Eurovision. Imagine how unreliable it would be if we are to follow opinions of just one single biased fan publishing his or her Top 43 preference on YouTube. You have hundreds and hundreds of those in YouTube if you have… Read more »

People shouldn’t take OGAE that seriously. The voting doesn’t mean the song will win, just that it has a good chance of winning. It all depends on the staging of the song. OGAE is only another way of showing who the favourites are, that doesn’t mean the final result will be like this.
As mentioned last year’s OGAE winner “only” got 6th while a song that got 9th won the whole thing. And a song that was bottom rated managed to get 5th

How the hell is Estonia doing so well?! I realise music is subjective but domethoing as dated, cheesey and soulless as “Verona” being up near the top and consistently winning votes is honestly incomprehensible to me. =/

Both Koit and Laura are veterans of the contest, which always helps with the fans, and as we’ve seen since 2015 (or even 2014 if youtube is to be evidenced), Estonia have regularly supplied the contest with the “fanwanks”. If it were down to ESC fans, Estonia would have won 2015 in a landslide and Juri would’ve made the top 5.

Hmm, that makes sense I guess. For the record I actually really enjoyed Estonia’s entries for the past two years (although the live performance in 2016 was so awkwardly staged that it kinda ruined the song) but for me “Verona” is bottom five material and I’m really struggling to see tgemerit others find in it. I had a similar struggle with Sweden’s entry in 2014.

Whether it’s good or bad in production or lyrics – it remains to be a perfect festive filler, that’s why it’s in almost every top.

I totally hear you man: I have no idea what these OGAE peeps see in the Estonian song, but there obviously is something that is not going through to me… I expected this song to end up close to last in its semi, now I’m thinking it might qualify. It still has a 0% chance of winning though, so no big deal. 🙂

I agree with Hungary (the lyrics and the background of the song). Very well said! I really-really hope this song goes straight to top 5. Is it so difficult? Oh please no… My heart lies with Italy and Portugal (I’m repetitive, I Know…), and Hungary right behind them. It should be much more considered, but I see fans quite like it, at the end. Hope he’ll grab the position he deserves. Along with Australia, which is not a very original song but it sounds so classic good for a soulful ballad. I also agree with Hungary. I don’t know why it’s so underrated, the melody is beautiful and the lyrics are powerful. The song isn’t like any other this year.

Exactly 🙂 He’s talking of something that ACTUALLY celebrates diversity. And struggling in life. I’ve seen his interviews, he almost seems a fish out of water, he doesn’t speak English (I guess he doesn’t speak much in general) but he’s very kind. Just like the other two “borderline” contestant Gabbani and Sobral (who just didn’t show up at all and I appreciate it in a certain way…). These 3 look so different from the others. This thing I really like!

Those songs are sooooo good!!
Hungary: You can feel the pain when he sings. It is really beautiful. Celebrate diversity indeed!
Italy: When he sings “Piovono gocce di Chanel, Su corpi asettici, Mettiti in salvo dall’odore dei tuoi simili”, he really made me think why human beings are no different from the other animals. Then he says “sex appeal” and he explains the “naked ape”.
Portugal: It’s poetry. People say it’s from the 50’s. I say it’s ageless.

Totally agree. You feel the pain and rage then you go and check the translation, and you realize you are listening to a prayer. So emotional… Hungarians well done! I love music For these reasons, this is making the difference, not the english lyrics, neither the voice or the “modernity” of pretentious well produced songs… I’m happy I’m not the only one! It’s becoming a competition of modernity, but that doesn’t mean “good”… Timeless songs are THE songs… Finland too is much more interesting (someone says “boring”) than Sia, Del Rey and Lorde copycats… You can feel her inner depth…… Read more »

Your point has no sense about Portugal if you put Sweden 3rd in the televote xD
And the difference is that not many people voted in Portugal while in Sweden everybody votes.

And Stage presence and the way he performs is what makes Portugal strong and memorable xD

About juries you are right, but again.. why then you predict Netherlands 5th and Denmark 3rd as they are dated as well :S

OGAE has only got it right four times in ten years, what appeals to fans does not always appeal to viewers on the night. The OGAE poll has previously placed Switzerland second (in years they failed to qualify in 2007 and 2008), picked Sweden as their best entry in 2008 (which needed juries to get it in the Final that year!!), Hungary in 2011 as the best (placed bottom four), Iceland 3rd in 2012 (bottom half of the scoreboard), San Marino 2nd in 2013 (failed to qualify), Israel 2014 (failed to qualify). Moral of the story is we shouldn’t get… Read more »

“OGAE has only got it right four times in ten years, what appeals to fans does not always appeal to viewers on the night”.

That’s only if you consider the country that placed first in the OGAE poll. If you look at the overall ranking, the Eurovision winner has been in the OGAE top 5 seven times in the last ten years (they only missed three: Dima Bilan, Azerbaijan and Jamala). So I think the OGAE top 5 is actually a very strong indicator.

I’ve thought about it and it seems like the jury voting could be really open this year. It’s a well acknowledged fact that ESC juries judge voices heavily, and the two favourites (Italy and Belgium), don’t have the strongest ones. For some reason I see Denmark doing very well with the juries. After all Dami’s voice probably won her those 300+ jury points.

Stephanie

The juries look for 4 distinct sets of criteria when they vote according to their rules: the vocal capacity of the artist(s), the performance on stage, the originality/composition of the song, and the act’s overall impression. When you look at the top 3 with the jury last year (Australia, Ukraine and France), they must have ticked all the criteria boxes in order for them to do so well

I really don’t get the hype with Italy’s song. It’s mediocre at best and that is due in part to the gravelly singing that I don’t find appealing. I can think of other songs that are more deserving of a higher placement in the polls, like Isaiah’s ‘Don’t Come Easy’. He has a strong, commanding voice that takes the song to another level.

Who are these “most people” who like the Polish song? It’s a bland generic pop song with a wannabe diva singing passionately about absolutely nothing. I’m not surprised it’s not getting points from the OGAE (it’s also only 21st with the bookies and pretty low on most YouTube rankings).

@Polegend Godgarina That’s your opinion, Estonia would have been in my top 10/15 if Kerli or Elina would have won but atm they are 25ish for me. NO CHANCE ITALY WINS
I have problems to see that people that listen at Italy for the first time at the final will chose to lift the phone and wote if a person don’t know the italian language.

Those who vote in OGEA have listen to the songs many times and their opinions have been influenced of odds and what is written on blogga like wiwibloggs etc.
