Finland, Norma John’s Lasse Piirainen, 2

Hei Suomi! Finland will celebrate 100 years of independence this year and the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — have travelled north to join the party. The indie pop duo Norma John is hoping to give the country their second Eurovision victory and will represent Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with “Blackbird”. Are we feeling the pain of loss or are we happy to just let the blackbird sing? Read our review below!

Norma John with “Blackbird”

About Norma John

Norma John consists of Leena Tirronen and Lasse Piirainen, neither of whom are named Norma or John. They have been friends since high school, where their musical paths first collided. The group was born in 2008, but “Blackbird” is their first official single. Leena took part in the Finnish version of The X Factor in 2010 and finished third. She released her debut album under the moniker Leena Ihmemassa (Leena in Wonderland) the same year. Lasse has played piano since he was just four years old. Next to performing with a number of big Finnish artists, he also composes and produces music for himself and others.

“Blackbird” reviews

Bogdan: Arguably the best song Finland has ever sent to the contest, “Blackbird” is pure poetry. Comparable only to the likes of Susanne Sundfør or Ane Brun, Leena’s other-worldy voice slowly pierces the heart like a black dagger, and you can’t but surrender to its arresting power. Instead of a typical bridge, Lasse’s piano solo marks a departure from the recipe, stressing once again the uniqueness of this dark but utterly beautiful song. In an ideal world, entries like “Blackbird” should win Eurovision.

Score: 10/10

Chris: “Blackbird” seems to be a song people either connect with or they don’t. Unfortunately, in this case, I find myself in the latter. Whilst Leena’s vocals are certainly haunting, the entire piece feels too empty around them. Whilst simplicity can certainly work at Eurovision, this feels like it’s gone a step too far. Too often on listens it just passes by without being a standout — there may be trouble for Finland.

Score: 5/10

Share the love with Norma John phone covers and t-shirts, and Blackbird t-shirts and phone cases

Sami: This is simply stunning. I love the haunting atmosphere, which Leena keeps up with her beautiful voice. This is much more than just a typical Eurovision song. This is something for those who don’t like all the glitter and the glamour. I am so proud of Leena and Lasse and I think Finland might surprise many this year. The only negative thing I find is that the lyrics are slightly repetitive.

Score: 9/10

George: There is something dark and mysterious about this song, and it’s unexpectedly likeable. The vocals are undoubtedly on point and nearly flawless, and I think it’s really going to work live. Nevertheless, the music is really simplistic and just doesn’t work for me. And at some point, I feel like it’s just going on and on without progressing at all. This is most probably a qualifier, but that’s all.

Score: 4.5/10

William: I hated the studio cut. And then, when chairing the UK jury in the Finnish final, I awarded it my 12 points. This song comes to life live, owing to Leena’s resonant vocals which carry pain and longing so well. The staging — all smoke and dark lighting — creates a stirring atmosphere that demands silence, even as Leena’s voice soars. From all the darkness she still gives us light. The song becomes a meditation on love, loss and moving on. I adore it.

Score: 7.5/10

Angus: “Blackbird” is a slice of high Nordic noir dark drama and it ticks many boxes. The haunting vocal hits you like a blast of cold air — the emotional intensity of the piece is unparalleled in this year’s lineup. At the point where interest is fading, the piano middle-eight recaptures your attention. That said, unless the emotional intensity can be channelled properly, this will fail to engage viewers. The song is incredibly dark, but it’s also simple and for some that will fail to win their attention.

Score: 6/10

Robyn: This is a nice piece of Scandinavian gothic. There is a power and stillness to “Blackbird” — capturing that is going to be the key to whether it will work live. As long as the audience can connect with Lenna and Lasse’s miserable ballad (perhaps reflecting on heartbreak of their own), this should get Finland back in the final.

Score: 7/10

Deban: Europe’s state of mind, Eurovision’s running order, the visual presentation and many other external factors will all play a part in how this entry attracts votes. “Blackbird” may be beautiful, but it is too stagnant to have much impact on listeners who seek immediate gratification. This entry leans towards dark poetry, but IMO, this leans too far out. That said, I’ve warmed to this in the wake of London’s recent terrorist attacks especially when listening with my eyes closed.

Throw me to the lions if you want, but I kind of think this song won’t amount to much, and it’s likely failing to qualify. It does have artistic merit to it, and both sing it greatly live, but I feel it’s somewhat disengaging with the overall masses. I get the appeal it’s trying to do, but “Birds”, “Calm After the Storm” and “Silent Storm” were extremely great examples of the same method Norma John aims for here and following those would be tough to say the least. The moment it tries to engage you is there, but it doesn’t… Read more »

Reading comments here is like… tsk tsk.
Not every song has to entertain you at your fun, queer party, queens.
Wiwibloggers should know that ESC is more than that and we know it via many examples in the past.
The level of superficiality in this blog makes me roll my eyes…
Open your minds and ears, the world has more music to offer than your beloved Madonna and Lady Gaga.

Eurovision Song contest is meant to be a global celebration, a big party for everyone. So…it’s a party or a funeral? Coz this song’s atmosphere is suggesting a mourning instead of a party… How can you people support this type of song? It’s beyond me…

I won’t make it to the final, it’s too boring and both the juries and televoters won’t vote for this song, as long there are better ones in the semifinal + the automatic qualifiers (we all know who they are)…

The song is quite boring, I don’t find it appropriate for Eurovision. Most of the songs should be cheerful and optimistic, dance and having fun. I’ve always thought…if it’s not a powerful ballad (Yohanna “Is it true” type of ballad) then a country should not send it…

I am with Deban on this one. I think the high score from the complete pool of juries also reflects the political neutrality of Finland in Europe, and the lack if judges who have a history based grudges (like Azarbaijan/Arnenia) to compel them to go for very low scores. I think that the lyrics are dated and cheap… the image of a black bird is as much of a cliche symbol of sadness, as there is. There is no surprise, no resolution, no hope… All of these elements are present in the Portugese or Bulgarian songs, where the take on… Read more »

Yes, this is obviously a ESC promo photo and the dress is dreadful. Gothic will be nice, but there are a lot of other black dress options… At least the song lends itself to good staging. Let’s hope whoever works on the Finnish staging has more imagination than the designer of the black dress and photo shot:-) Thank you for the support:-)

This song, being absolutely gorgeous when sung live, didn’t haunt m? mind for a long time. But every time I was thinking where should it be in my top, I couldn’t find any flaws about it. Yes, as exception, the phrase left by Deban is quite precise and works for me too sometimes, but it’s not about this song – it’s about those who fail to listen attentively. In my opinion this song is overrated, and the wiki jury verdict is outrageous. This song is sooo boring. It won’t pass the semifinal, there are already other countries well rated in semi 1: Sweden, Belgium, Portugal, Iceland + we all know some other automatic qualifiers (Australia, Greece, Armenia, Azerbaijan). Let’s not neglect the Polish diaspora, we all knew what happened to Michal Szpack last year, televoters gave him 3rd position in the final (too bad the juries gave him low points). A little recap of the qualifiers: Sweden, Belgium, Portugal, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Poland. Moldova may easily… Read more »

Cat: “A little recap of the qualifiers: Sweden, Belgium, Portugal, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Poland. ” This is a very tough semi-final, I wouldn’t consider all of them as guaranteed qualifiers at all. Right now I’d say only Sweden, Australia, Portugal and Armenia are really safe. Belgium: wonderful song, sounds fantastic in the studio but whether she can pull it off live remains to be seen. Azerbaijan: a very good song but it has a very tough place in the running order, in between two very strong ballads. I think it probably will go through but I wouldn’t say… Read more »

I suspect “Blackbird” may be 2017’s equivalent of “Calm After the Storm” an underrated song that’s written off as boring but comes to life in the Semi-Final and makes a big impact on the audience. I know music is subjective but I feel bad for people who don’t see the beauty in this song. For me this is up there with Italy, Portugal and Belgium as the best song in this year’s contest. 9/10.

No. You’re thinking Carl Espen’s “Silent Storm” (Norway 2014, 8th at ESC). “Blackbird” is closer to Carl’s song than it is to Anouk’s; and that is why I expect it to finish in the top 10. Salvador’s “Amar Pelos Dois” reminds me of Anouk’s, and Anouk finished 9th in 2013. I expect both Salvador and Norma John to finish in the top 10.

Arguably the most proffesional and ‘real’ song this year, they sure know how to haunt you. The lyrics are SOOOOOOOO good and mysterious, it’s great. On paper this entry has everything: great vocals, a story behind it, great lyrics, classy and good performance, BEAUTYFULL piano solo, but for some reason I can’t connect to it. This is almost nothing to me, just a calm and simle song, and that can be pulled of live like The Netherlands 2014, I don’t think this will make the viewers vote for it, at least I wouldn’t. But then again, we have to wait… Read more »

Shocking this is rated so high. Probably the Iceland of this year then. The closest ESC comparison from recent years is probably “Birds”. It is not a fair comparison though because “Birds” is several tiers above “Blackbird”. “Blackbird” fails to build up and excite. It is a three minute snooze-fest. It is not difficult to make a 50 bpm song a good sleep anthem. 02 Norway | 04 United Kingdom | *06 Albania* | 08 Bulgaria | 11 Serbia | 12 Sweden 14 Denmark | *15 Moldova* | 16 Poland | 18 Latvia | 19 Cyprus | 20 Iceland 23… Read more »

Personal rating: I LOVE this song. It’s dark, it’s atmospheric, it’s beautiful. My only (minor) issue are the lyrics, which I find almost cheesy at some points (maybe because they remind me of German poem from 19th century, which tells pretty much the same story, only with a nightingale instead of a blackbird). 9/10 Prediction: If the staging manages to reflect the tone and atmosphere of the song (I think it needs to be even more focused and toned down compared to the national final), Finland might end up quite high on the scoreboard this year. What I expect: Top… Read more »

If the performance is anything like in UMK, the juries will certainly place it in top 5 at the semi. The audience response should also be good. It’s a magnet for anyone in the search for a heavy, emotional material like ‘Birds’ or ‘Monster Like Me’. I expect the televote also placing it at least in top 7, although it can be a qualifier even from the 12th spot at televote if the juries rate it as high as predicted. This is the entry I most root for in semi final 1, the semi I have no voting rights for.… Read more »

Hi Colin. In a way, this scenario reminds me a little of the winner of the 1995 contest (“Nocturne” by Secret Garden) – that song was pure melancholy and won because it was quality music. Eurovision is not always about a good dance track, but I always say if a writer is going to send a “funeral song” to Eurovision then it better be the best ever written and it better make me cry. “Blackbird” is that song; it’s the best melancholic song in many years. I really hope it qualifies for the final.

Hi, Purple Mask 🙂 Just heard Nocturne and wow, what a beautiful song. I realistically can see Blackbird also winning as ‘dark horse’. It’s often near the top of lists and OGAE also places it highly, although it hasn’t been named a forth-runner just yet. There are few of the songs I see snatching the title more than I do Finland, though, but Helsinki 2018 would be such a pleasant surprise. One of the most challenging tasks in songwriting is to write a sad song in a bright-and-happy key. “Blackbird” takes this challenge and not only passes it, but surpasses and obliterates it! Here’s how it does this… The song begins with a beautiful verse of lyrics set to two repeating chords: the first chords is undefined between G/Amaj, while the second chord defines the key as D major. This is one of the brightest and happiest keys in classical music, underlining the genius behind this song. After the 8-bar verse, there’s a Chorus that fully defines the first chord as… Read more »

Just like me when I watched MGP 2014 (Norway). I was all in for Linnea Dale’s “High Hopes”; but Carl Espen blew everybody away with “Silent Storm”. The more I heard this song, the more I was convinced he could be a contender; and after watching his music video, he became my #1 pick. He finished 8th. This by far one of my favourite Finnish entries so far and I usually hate ballads. But there is something so haunting about this song, like it would be played at a funeral or something, but even if that probably sounds morbid, it actually is quite captivating, this is by far the best ballad of the year and it will be a crime if Finland don’t qualify from that tough semi final while countries with some really bad and dated songs, (Greece, Azerbaijan, Albania) end up qualifying. 6.5/10 and currently number 9 in my Top 10.

I don’t know how I feel about this. It is beautifully sung and has so much emotion in it, but at the same time I find it boring and it puts me to sleep. Nice to see that it’s done well. It’s such a pretty and simple song, yet so emotional and dark. Leena’s vocals and Lasse’s piano skills make what is quite possibly Finland’s best ever song, beaten only by Hard Rock Hallelujah. This deserves to qualify and I really hope it does.
