Portugal, Salvador Sobral, 1

Olá! The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — has landed in Lisbon. We are taking a taxi to Belém Tower, on the top of which we will listen to Salvador Sobral‘s Eurovision 2017 song “Amar pelos dois” (Love for both of us). Will it be love at first listen? Or send us fleeing from Portugal? Read on to find out!

Salvador Sobral – “Amar pelos dois”

About Salvador Sobral

Salvador Sobral was born in Lisbon 27 years ago, but also resided in the United States and Spain as a child. In 2009, he competed on season three of Ídolos, Portugal’s version of Pop Idol. He placed seventh in the competition. His sister, Luísa Sobral, is also a singer who previously placed third on season one of Ídolos. Salvador won Portugal’s Eurovision selection Festival da Canção 2017 with the song “Amar pelos dois” (Love for both of us), which was written by his sister.

Owing to ongoing health issues, Salvador won’t attend the first two rehearsals in Kyiv, dispatching his sister Luisa to stand in for him instead. “He has his health team that is here in Portugal, so he cannot leave for that long,” she told wiwibloggs in April. “We talked to the Eurovision committee and they said that it was okay if I would do the first two rehearsals — they are more lighting and sound — and it’s OK if I’m there and sing for him and they can see if everything is right with the visuals.”

“Amar pelos dois” reviews

William: Dreamy from the very first note, “Amar pelos dois” takes nostalgia and longing and turns it into something that’s painful but beautiful. Vocally Salvador is assertive yet soft, competent but never flashy. His quirky delivery adds to the tenderness and charm. He proves, perhaps better than anyone this year, that you don’t have to sing loudly to be heard, nor do you have to shriek to stir drama. A sheer joy.

Score: 9/10

Josh: An absolute pleasure for the ears. Many fans have labelled this year’s contest as Balladvision 2017, and whilst “Amar pelos dois” is obviously a ballad, the timeless quality and unique presentation set this song apart from all the other entries this year. Listening to the song, I’m taken back to my childhood watching old-school Disney films. Viewers will feel some sense of nostalgia in this song. A surprisingly brilliant effort.

Score: 8.5/10

Chris: Eurovision songs of the 50s and 60s often have a charming, dreamy quality about them. That’s great for the 50s and 60s — not 2017. Salvador’s performance is uncomfortable and confusing to watch: his illness doesn’t explain those head throws. There will be people who love this (and there obviously are), but I feel that the Eurovision bubble may be protecting it somewhat. Anywhere else, this would bomb.

Score: 3/10

Bogdan: “Amar pelos dois” is a perfect, pure, timeless love song that contrasts heavily with Salvador Sobral’s awkward, hipster-chic, disheveled look. This is his forte, along with his equally perfect, pure and timeless voice. Unlike other acts, the singer is striking in his modesty and is letting the song take centre stage. Instead of flashy outfits, pyrotechnics or vocal gymnastics, Portugal is sending something not for our eyes or ears, but for our hearts.

Score: 10/10

Deban: Fusing vintage chanson and cabaret, Salvador Sobral takes listeners on a musical journey. Underscoring the strength of his expressive performance is a delicate touch. Crafted in the style of when Eurovision was a high-end black-tie event, there is fragility and a nostalgic quality to “Amar Pelos Dois”. However, this throwback isn’t a throwaway number. I liked it at Festival da Canção, and I love it more now.

Score: 7.5/10

Robyn: This is just gorgeous. “Amar pelos dois” sounds like it could have easily been entered in Eurovision 60 years ago, but yet Salvador brings his own jazzy hipster style to it. It’s so sweet and romantic and unlike anything else we’re going to see at Eurovision this year. In a song competition that loves big, bold performances, it’s just nice to find an entry with a stripped-back simplicity and a big heart.

Score: 8/10

Bernardo: This might be a biased opinion but here it goes — Portugal is my winner of Eurovision 2017. Salvador Sobral brings to Eurovision what the competition has needed for many years now. Among fireworks, LED displays, big shouty divas and technology, “Amar Pelos Dois” is a timeless piece of jazz/pop art that reminds us of the genesis of the contest. Yes, the Eurovision Song Contest. It’s 1956 and it’s 2017. His performance transcends borders, transcends language and touches hearts.

Score: 10/10

Buy cartoon Salvador t-shirts and phone cases

Edd: One thing I can’t stand is when people call something “a masterpiece” purely because it’s a classical ballad. However, this really is verging on masterpiece. Salvador’s vocals are smoother than extra creamy Philadelphia, and his look and pronunciation are so hipster that he convinces me that old-fashioned ballads are cool. In fact, this sweet, airy production stands out so much from the pack that I would put money on it to win the whole thing.

Score: 9.5/10

I hope his sister, Luisa Sobral, that will coordenate the visuals and lights on stage, wont make a huge mistake of only use a single spotlight on Salvador’s small circle stage. I would choose more for the visualization like flying between the clouds to give some deepness to the stage with english lyrics like the following video link below and colors effect changing along the instrumental power. Red – for heart, love, high vibrations. Blue – for pure, calm, low vibrations. Something simple but that attends to the richness of the song and give extra credits to the Salvador’s performance… Read more »

As fard as we know, Salvador won the portuguese festival, without menciona any kind of health problems. But everyone could see what was his unique style and that something wasn’t well. He had two hernias surgery 2 das before the contest. Therefore he won it! He was so happy for being the instrument of his sister’s beautiful and classy song. Unfortunately, our suspicious were real: now everyone knows that Salvador needs a heart transplant in one year. He never talked about it because he just want to live his life in the best way: for him, just music. He didn’t… Read more »

I’m not a crier or get overly emotional over a song, but this song does it for me. Yeah, I originally wanted Pedro Gonçavles to win (I didn’t watch the 1st semi). But after watching the final of FAC and hearing this for the first time, I can see why everyone loved it. Along with Bulgaria, it’s my co-winner.

Hopefully his health can take it.

I can’t see nothing wrong with this song! It’s simple and beautiful! For me is a good song and it touchs on my feelings (I’m sorry if it sounds a cliché)! I understand who doesn’t like this kind of songs but please stop saying that this song is “bad”! Bad is the way you describe that, I prefer when people says “it’s not my cup tea” than “this song is too bad”. Maybe the people that says the portuguese song sounds old most of them listen Lana Del Rey (hi hiprocrisy or not)! We go to museum to appreciate old… Read more »

50% are improving their tastes and their criteria begin to change, tired of mainstream;

Salvador, more than a technicist, is an interpreter who privileges the improvisation, more than anything else. His seemingly careless way, comes from this fact, which together with the feeling that the moment dictates to him, make of each act a unique moment. His distinctive voice and aura of humility, make up the rest of the exquisite frame that surrounds and gives to the classical sobriety of the instrumental, an almosgt angelic and accessible lightness. Make no mistake about it. All the attention that this song is having, of positive or negative, is nothing more than the reflection of all these… Read more »

@Da Silva: Thank you for your beautiful words. 🙂 As a songwriter, my first concern is that people will judge Salvador’s performance style over-and-above that of the song. There’s a difference between “feeling” the music and getting in the way of it – I’m not sure which of these Salvador is producing. It’s also easy to interpret Salvador’s movements at Festival Da Cancao to be deliberately imitating those of a physically (or mentaly) impaired person – that could be seen as potentially offensive. However, since his performance is free-flowing and organic, this effect might not happen at all at the… Read more »

I love this song, but I’m surprised that no-one has asked the obvious question:
At the Festival Da Cancao, why was Salvador moving like someone with a physical (or mental) impairment?
I had assumed that this was because he was ill, but I have since been told this was not the case. Now I’m puzzled.

Hi again Purple Mask, that is what I am trying to do… His unique gestures are just his way of expressing as a performer (take a look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4tBJTwzCeg). Love it or hate it but know that none of it has anything to do with any illness. Nevertheless, for those who are genuinely worried about his health, I might add that, during “Festival da Canção” he was recovering from surgery and we could notice how he had some difficulty walking. Salvador says he feels a pain all day, every day. The movements that consider strangers are due to the pains that he feels or to him feel the music, it is as if he incorporated the music and the instruments, he plays violin, cello and piano during the interpretation, he is the music the instruments and the feeling In one person.

Some of this WiWi jury must simply suffer from some sort of musical stupidity and/or lack of musical good taste to give such a low score to Salvador’s song! Portugal sent one of its best songs and one of the best songs this year to this European Song “Circus”! I guess some elements of the jury just prefer to consider Portugal as the eternal underdog in this stereotyped “competition”. 6.56 out of 10? Really?!!!! Unbelievable!!!!

I think people are so desperate to root for perennial underdog Portugal that the minute they send a decent song they praise it for all the same reasons they roasted “N’oubliez pas”.
“Amar pelos dois” is a lovely song with a vintage sound with the bonus of not being in English, but it’s being overhyped to infinity.

One can not ask more from a song. It‘s easy to apprehend, has an extremely appealing melody, a sober and irreprehensible instrumental, a simple lyric with a strong penchant over the message and is interpreted in a genuine and felt manner, by a singer with a very distinct and pleasant voice. To refer also the superior quality that the whole implies immediately in a first contact. It has therefore everything to be a winning song, which is already in fact and far beyond its eventual linguistic limitations.

How can anyone give 0-1-2 ps to this song, I don’t understand. This is so beautiful, emotional, outstanding. Plus he is singing in his own language and it sounds like a personal song unlike other entries taken from foreign composers or Justin Timberlake, Sia wannabes. How could you rank Swedish entry higher than this song? That’s just crime. 🙁

Anyways, I am sure that in real contest Portugal will get much better result. Because Eurovision viewers are not only people who prefer good looking boys/girls, singers with expensive flashy outfits, shouty diva ballads over the songs like this.

For real?

Well managed, it will make an impact in the competition. Maybe he’ll be the only one to use the stage too. Incidentally, seems the island has a LED floor too, I don’t know if he will use it.

A dark arena (perhaps with the exception of those small lights they give everyone), with spotlights only on him, will do wonders for his scorecard. 🙂

I see that things have become rather passionate here. Well, “Amar pelos dois” is my winner and my only 12/12 song this year. Others can think whatever they want because they can’t take away anything from the love I have for this song. On the scoring issue: I think that people who give 0s and 1s a lot just follow their gut reaction without ever starting to think or look for whatever might be good in an entry they don’t like immediately. In the case of Portugal, I would give 3/12 because of the fantastic live vocals alone, even if… Read more »

Lol Its so funny to read those comments..pepole cant believe that this song get lower score than moldova or Sweden..well people relax!! We are pepole with different tase in music and who are you to say that Portugal song is better than others?? its just your personal taste and thats it!! I persony think that this song is boring..i need in Eurovision uptempo songs like Sweden or israel or beautiful young songs like Ireland or Bulgaria.so accept different opinions please.Good luck to every one.

I agree with you, Salvador fans are so condescending, and about Salvador staying on the island (the small stage) and singing, there’s a superstition about that. Singers that go to ”the island” don’t win. Last year top 3 (1-UKR, 2-AUS, 3-RUS) didn’t go to the island.

And I have a feeling that Francesco will go to the island too, he can’t help it, is like forbidden fruit. Cursed by the island !!!!!!

The Italian staging will be the same as in San Remo. No island.

The island serves only to raw, intimate songs, that live by themselves. These songs are very rare. All that you mention needed, setting lights….. to call the attention with something more to highlight.

I admit that my theory is not logical, is about a superstition. For example The Netherlands – Anouk and Douwe Bob were on the island and did worse than The Common Linnets that were not on the island. Is just a superstition, not serious. Just fun fact.

The Common Linnets could have sung on the island, it’s an intimate song … They just did not do it by the number of elements on stage.

The quality of this song is so glaring that it highlights the incompetence and prejudice of a few Wiwibloggers. They did not get the lesson they had with Italy in 2011 and the Netherlands in 2014.

Then they will score Italy high, leaving poor Francesco ashamed to get a high score from such an incompetent “group”.

Well, actually, I’m rooting for Italy too, and I think Francesco is a worthy possible winner. But I would have loved to see Portugal one of the heighest score here (more than Sweden for sure).

It wasn’t my intention to generalize but the fact that Amar pelos Dois has lower score than other banal and generic songs makes me question your justice and fairness. The entry of Sweden is first in your preferences. No logic for that.
I have a strong feeling that some of the members in the site were bought by swedish lobbies and special interests. Totally biased!

The score doesn’t compute with the depth and beauty of this song. Wiwi jury is an absolute stupidity stuffed with cucks without any knowledge of music.

“That’s great for the 50s and 60s — not 2017.” Oh please. F*** off. What this person want is to put more catchy pop songs and diva screamy ballads in this festival and follow the trend. Just another one in the sheeple. Baaaaaaa!

Go Salvador! <3

2011 | Italy (a jazzy song by Gualazzi) – It ranked 36th in Wiwibloggs predictions!!!!!!

2014 | Netherlands – ony 4,4 score in Wiwiblogs.

Both finished in the second!

It’s the clear Top 2 of this year.
And many countries will change its mind to see 2 non-English song slaying and stop trying to sound like Sweden.

Different strokes for different folks… While the score is rather low, I believe that Salvador has already won. Why, you may ask? Because he is promoting himself as an artist, his album is back in the charts (I downloaded it and it’s fantastic), his concerts are sold out and he has many people not only in Portugal and in Europe but also in the Americas and Asia supporting him and following his work. He is an artist that is honest and true to his craft. This song is representative of what he is an artist and believe or not, there… Read more »

That score is way too low for this song.

His clothes may be too big (though there seems to be a reason for that), but his song was perfectly tailored for him with love and care by his own sister, and he does it justice and then some.

My favorite is Italy, but if Salvador wins, I’ll be more than happy.

Learn this word: T I M E L E S S.
Music when it is good becomes eternal, loses the seal of the time in which it was born. As one of the Finnish experts about Portugal2017 said: “One of the best songs ever, can be heard in any decade because of its timeless character!”

http://areena.yle.fi/1-3798189?autoplay=true (1st place to Portugal)

Do not forget that 2017 is the year of success of La La Land.

Dear ESC fans who think it is “painful to watch Salvador Sobral performing”… He feels the music in every cell of his body. True musicians are like that, but while some of them feel it inside and channel it to the voice, others cannot help moving as if induced by a conditioned reflex. Like Joe Cocker for instance (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POaaw_x7gvQ), and like Salvador Sobral, who said recently in a RTP Interview (19 April 2017): “… sometimes a note will give me a body movement, other times a movement will help me reach a certain note…”. Love from Portugal 🙂 <3 <3… Read more »

As more reviews come around it becomes even more clear that some people don’t even listen to a single second of some songs, and only look to the country’s name. Those 3 are Antranig, Sami and Tobias. If one of the smaller countries had sent “I can’t go on” they would have given it minimal scores. These 3 are just pathetic
