Over the past month the Wiwi Jury has listened to, reviewed and rated all 43 42 of the songs in Eurovision 2017. In the end one entry has come out on top: Italy’s Francesco Gabbani and his song “Occidentali’s karma”. Belgium’s Blanche and France’s Alma follow in second and third place.

Francesco Gabbani‘s catchy social commentary inspired high praise and high scores from many members of the Wiwi Jury, with 28 rating it 9/10 or higher. Overall, the Wiwi Jury gave Italy’s entry an average score of 8.96. This is the second highest Wiwi Jury score for a Eurovision entry — Only Loreen’s “Euphoria” has a higher score.

Jury member William had this to say about “Occidentali’s karma”:

“Occidentali’s Karma” ticks so many boxes — I need several pens and one very large scroll to evaluate it. Contemporary yet somehow throwback, its digital opening gives way to an orchestral sound accented with drum and guitar. The chorus is an ear worm of the first order and, despite the explicit social critique, the song remains uplifting and radio-friendly. Perfectly pitched and delivered with unrivalled charisma, it’s a light song with a weighty message, and it speeds by in a whoosh of smiles and tapping feet. A deserving and likely winner. 9/10

Following in second place was Belgium’s Blanche with the sultry “City Lights”. The Wiwi Jury gave it an average score of 8.67. This is the fourth highest Wiwi Jury Eurovision score ever, coming just after Sergey Lazarev’s 8.7 from last year.

Jury member Luis was impressed by Belgium’s entry:

I can’t believe this is the same country who sent Patrick Ouchene, Iris or Axel Hirsoux. Belgium has metamorphosed from ugly duckling into Eurovision powerhouse in a very short time, and Blanche is another proof of that. “City Lights” blends innocence with darkness and creates a moody atmosphere, which is tailor-made for Blanche’s deep vocals. This entry is so intelligently crafted that I could go on for hours on how delighted I am to have it at Eurovision 2017. 9.5/10

And in third place was France’s Alma with “Requiem”. Alma’s breezy Parisian style impressed jury members enough for an average score of 7.92. This is the same score the jury gave Australia’s Dami Im in 2016.

Jury member Forrest was feeling Alma’s style:

“Requiem” is remarkable in that it manages to be both dramatic while retaining an almost summery feel. The revamp did well to add a bit of weight with some heavier strings, but the song remains light, fresh with a wonderful feel-good vibe. The offbeat instrumentation can be a bit jarring at first, but “Requiem” quickly develops a rhythm of its own, and Alma’s vocals wind through the track as elegantly as the music video’s dancers up the side of Parisian buildings. This simply oozes class and will undoubtedly provide France with another strong showing in Kyiv. 8.5/10

Down at the other end, Lithuania came in last place, with the jury only awarding an average of 3.31 for Fusedmarc‘s song “Rain of Revolution”. The 1980s-style horn-infused track did not impress the jury so much.

The Wiwi Jury reviewed the original 43 songs of  the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in March 2017, based on studio recordings, music videos and live performances, where available. The Wiwi Jury rankings are not intended as a prediction of the eventual results in Kyiv. Rather, it’s an indication of what our favourites were.

I´ve never been a fan of “Modern Talking”-Style, thus I hope, Estonia won´t get too many points instead of good Romanian entry. Azerbaijan and FYROMacedonia R in my top ten, if they do well on stage,… the live stuff I´ve watched, is bad, thus until now not in my top 10. Hungary is in my top 5. UK gives me still goosebumps, also in my top 5. Austria and Germany know to deliver live, hope, TV will also transmitt that feeling,…think, they R underrated. Austria´s Nathan should qualify,… see them on 15. Will there B dark horses, who will B… Read more »

Hello Wiwibloggs!

First of all, want to thank William, Robin, and all the crew for the hard job on judging the entries, pretty much the most fun pieces from this site ????

Secondly, I recollected (and cleaned up, #typoking speaking) the comments/reviews of my own, you may look at them here!

It would be neat if Italy won in 2017. They last won 27 years ago, and then 26 years before that. So let’s have Italy win this year then in 2045 (28 years from now) to continue the sequence.

I also feel like they deserve it: they’ve been sending their A-game to Eurovision (they’re the only Big 5 to take it that seriously) and have had pretty good results! They are one of the best Eurovision countries at the moment (along with Sweden and Russia), it should be rewarded.

Seven of my top 10 (as of my 2nd evaluation) are in this top 10. The exceptions are Estonia, Portugal and Norway, with Belgium, Azerbaijan and Israel in this top 10. I’ve just started my 3rd and final evaluation, and the more I listen to Blanche’s song, the more likely I think she will knock JOWST out of my top 10, in spite of her video being slightly above “very good” but not “excellent.” …And I do grade the videos, because it gives us a window into what they might present on stage. Fortunately the ESC is not decided on a average from each caller like it is here. I think Portugal will have a lot of votes from the people who love the song and its position will be more in tune with the OGAEs predictions (I believe it sits there on a seventh place).

That is genuinely a good question. In my personal opinion his hands look gentle and soft but at the same time they are strong and muscular. I could be wrong but I definitely feel that his hands show a strong sense of Italian descent. I am interested to hear from them though because they might have better opinions about Francesco’s hands

My grandma (Italian, obviously) taught me that big (or prominent or “muscular” as you call them) hands and noses in men are signs of an established inner strength and mental solidity (or self reliance, how you wanna you call it). Or something like that, you know, old school wisdom… Why, do you study or evaluate body language and constitution? Interesting!

No surprise Italy ranked the highest and I am almost certain that we will be seeing Italy win this year. Of the other songs in the top 10, I think Finland are ranked too high and although I think the juries will like it, I can’t see it reaching the final. Israel and Serbia also to high IMO, while I would have Australia, Netherlands and the UK higher.

As mentioned on another thread, whenever Wiwi does their ranking, someone from their top 10 misses the final. My bet is either Finland (due to the draw in SF1) and Macedonia (live weak vocals).

Also, some songs were ranked too high (looking at Azerbaijan) and some were too low (Portugal, Netherlands).

Rehearsal starts on Sunday and by then there will be changes. So all I can say is good luck to everyone.

Mini-review:
– Magellano (Gabbani): It’s a solid pop/alternative album, very radiofriendly and original. The only song that I’m not very into is “A Moment like this”. It has some Latin/Hispanic roots. There’re only 9 songs though. Score 8.5/10
– Unexpected (Levina): It’s really unexpected. Perfect Life is the worst song by far and it doesn’t match with the tracklist. At some point during tracks #9 or #10 I’ve got a bit bored. But it’s also a solid pop album with some slow-motion vibes. Wildfire is my favourite. Score: 6.0/10

“A moment like this” is “A moment of silence”? I can’t hear Latin/Hispanic roots in that, hahaha, but I’m not really good defining music. 🙂
What I can say about Magellano is that in my opinion there are good songs with brilliant (even genius) lyrics. For me it’s 8.5 only because it has only 9 tracks and I already knew 3 of them. But there are songs that are earworm from the first listening, and it’s absolutely not common with Italian songs.

I haven’t listen to Levina’s album yet. But I’ll do tomorrow I think.
