Massive heads in the centre of the stage, a dancing gorilla and digital surfboards — it’s time for more second rehearsals at Eurovision 2017! This morning Ukraine’s O.TorvaldItaly’s Francesco Gabbani, and Spain’s Manel Navarro take the stage keen to show off their various nips and tucks. Here’s what’s going down…

Ukraine: O.Torvald with “Time”

They’re bringing rock to Eurovision 2017 and this morning O.Torvald really did rock on. Their stage show featured many more fast cuts and strobes this time around, helping give the song pace and energy. Lightning crashes and the camera zooms in on the drummer banging and the guitarists strumming — and at deliberately lop-sided angles to create a raw, chaotic quality. A series of words in different languages — including Mandarin, English and Ukrainian — flash at the top of the LED. (We discerned “obey”, “time” and “look”). The lead singer now wears an avant-garde tunic with no sleeves, which helps him show off his endless series of tattoos which snake from shoulder to wrist.

Giving us head yet again, producers have adjusted how they present the massive bust at centre stage. LED floor effects now move from floor to face and it seems to be catching the various colours and light much better today. They’ve also adjusted the lighting, timing and pace of the ending, zooming in close on the golden head and panning out more slowly so that you see and grasp the effect of a man submerged in the giant floor.

Ukraine will perform 22nd in the grand final.

O.Torvlad, “Time”: Performance Preview

Italy: Francesco Gabbani with “Occidentali’s karma”

Italy’s run toward the winner’s trophy got renewed strength this morning as it became clear that its delegation had sorted out many of their technical issues from the first rehearsal. The dancing gorillas on the LED now sway in time with Francesco (for the most part), making the digital-human choreography really pop. Francesco seemed more at ease and even more playful, getting very saucy when he sang the words “sex appeal”. His backing vocalists also seemed to have been practicing their moves, as they managed to sway in time as well. At times Francesco and his gorilla disappeared in the black portions of the LED wall and floor. But during our interview yesterday in Kyiv he told us he’s going to “light up”. He didn’t elaborate, but perhaps that means his suit will feature some special lighting?

Italy will perform in the first half of the grand final.

Italy’s second rehearsal

Francesco Gabbani, “Occidentali’s Karma”: Performance Preview

Spain: Manel Navarro with “Time”

The performance opens with a dark moon rising and Manel’s sexy and inviting vocals. But the sun soon rises and we see Manel serving that Iberian warmth via yellow palm trees, beach vistas and plenty of sun. The camera seemed to linger on his face more this time around — no complaints here — and he was completely in his element, serving boho-hippy realness. The camera pans helped highlight some of the LED wall and floor backdrops more strongly this time, including a lovely shot from overhead where Manel and his backing vocalists appear to be singing on top of surfboards. It’s breezy and bright. The performance order could really make or break this. Sandwich it between two women screaming about pain and love and Manel could definitely finish a few places higher on the scoreboard.

Spain will perform in the second half of the grand final.

Italy and about the running order in the final. I think Italy will be one of the last songs in the first half. Then those who got higest points in their semi finals will be early in second part so the chanses for the favorites are more eqal. Crister Björkman was really diseponed on Austria 2015 when they put Måns as 13 and Italy and Rusdia just in the end! He said that if he had desided the runningorder, he wouldn’t put the favorites in second part in that good positions. If the winner in first semi will be Portugal,… Read more »

I am new to this site but from my perspective and from what I have read I think Italy will not win sorry, overhyped I think. I think Portugal are going to win. It would be great for them as they have never won or been in the top five. I think UK will do well for the first time In years.

I like Ukraine a lot, it`s definitely in my personal Top 10. I like to keep it friendly but I really don`t understand the hype about Italy. I would love Italy to win but not this year with such a mediocre song! Il Volo was the real winners with a superb song, this gorilla stuff is not even funny. Francesco is probably a great guy but winners need a good singing voice and this is seriously lacking here.

I agree! Italy was My favorite last year and top 5 2015.
It seems that many love this song and his personality and if the telewoters in europé have same taste as the most devoted ESC fans. Well then will italy maby win if they have the juries on their side!
My two favorites are Portugal and Belgium.

Ukraine : The performance was more rock! And it should look like this! Good job!

Italy : everything worked much better now! Francesco has such energy! At times I feel like he”ll leave the stage! For sure it will look amazing with the audience! Winner!

Spain : again too much going on here! I like the vibe, the summer feeling! I But after a white it gets boring!

The music of italy is interesting, it is an irony to the eurovision, to enjoy with lifestyles, divas, fast-paced life, the stable western life. And then Portugal appears that is the opposite of what the Italian sings …. very interesting this perspective. Italy enjoys the western lifestyle and unintentionally appeals to the music of POrtugal.

Yes, but I am really interested! Also about other songs that are favorites! But I am most intrested in the reaction when they hear Italy.
The reason. Everyone I have played the song to has have been really skeptical. But since it’s such favorite I’ve been thinking that it’s just a quincidens! It would really be interesting to get serious answers.
Is it different how the reaktion are in diffrent parts of europé, in which older etc!

Ingen dynamik. One thing none of us have mentioned yet is how Italy are drawn in the first half of the Grand Final. If any significant rival is drawn in the second half, then that might be a good Grand Final to watch. 🙂 I should also mention that without Russia participating, any runaway winner (like Italy) might achieve the highest score in ESC history, as the votes will be less split – the OGAE poll demonstrated this quite spectacularly. Even if Bulgaria does very well with juries, for example, it would need a HUGE amount of televotes to help it beat… Read more »

This is a good analysis / perspective. My only question would be, what if the Russian diaspora unites behind the Bulgarian flag this time around? Thanks Maclaren. 🙂 Statistically it means that higher numerical values of points will be available than per usual to those leading countries. (In other words, the “swing effect” will be larger.) So, in order for a country to beat the runaway winner (Italy), it would have to score a higher proportion of higher point values, as opposed to gathering a consistently mid-range level across jury and televote. What happened with Ukraine last year (2nd in both categories) is a bit more unlikely to happen in the same way this year, as the “swing” in larger point values is larger without… Read more »

I don’t think there will be a landslide of points for Italy performing in the first half, maybe if Romania gets 1st half as well.
Italy will probably score higher with the juries (Australia 2016, Sweden 2015, Austria 2014, Italy 2011, they all performed at 10-13 positions. Sweden 2012 and Denmark 2013 were runaway winners).
The Russian diaspora will probably rely more on Belarus because of the language.

Portugal is 2nd in the odds because:

However, betting odds are not always right, and should only be interpreted as a guide.

The Big 5 aren’t necessarily split evenly between two halves. I don’t think the EBU would place Italy first because they would want viewers to stay tuned to the show to wait for the favourite. It’s a nice idea though, I think Italy could win performing 1st.

But in Sanremo he had a lot stronger competition than he has got now. Sanremo is a serious music competition. Eurovision Song Contest is something else entirely – much more of an arena for the Gabbani-style of performance and probably with a younger audience as well. I’m not worried about the televotes. The jury is much more unpredictable since they aren’t music experts – they will vote very randomly like they did last year. Gabbani might end up in the juries top 5, but I don’t think he’ll win. Don’t worry. People always say that with the big favourites e.g Sweden 2012, Denmark 2013 and certainly Sweden 2015. A lot of viewers will be tuning into Eurovision for the first time when it airs and so would not be aware of any hate so it wouldn’t affect their voting. Also we’ve had two winners from the first half in recent years, Austria 2014 and Sweden 2015, performing 11th and 10th respectively which I predict to be Italy’s position. I express an opinion just like you. Sorry if it’s not the same as yours. You are the one being silly for not being able to handle it!

I’ve just said I can’t stand your stupidity just as you can’t stand Gabbani’s voice… …both the opinions should be fine, so why are you so angry and obsessed? That said, I do support Finland & Belgium!

OMG, Italy is so overrated this year.. I almost fell asleep during his rehearsal.. didn’t manage to get to the end as well.. The only thing that is good with the Italian entry are the lyrics, but the music is nothing special.. it’s too ordinary and we’ve heard so many songs like this.. I also don’t like Francesco.. He is so full of himself and uncharismatic, unlike the most of you say.. On the other hand.. I think that Bulgaria and Portugal have chance of winning the contest, objectivly speaking.. Although I would love to see Finland, Azerbaijan and Belgium… Read more »

I agree with you on every point of your view! I never saw this as a winner, just because of the message, which is not even understandable to everybody watching ESC.

You felt asleep during his rehearsals and were up during Bulgarian rehearsals????
You call him arrogant and uncharismatic, but think that bulgarian guy is very charismatic?????
You must have some problems or simply hate Francesco because probably is gone a win.
Sometimes is more honest to say I HATE HIM BECAUSE WANT MY COUNTRY OR FAVOURITE TO WIN…. and not finding stupid excuses to justify your hate

Anyka: Finland and Belgium have both surely good songs (Blanche need to improve her vocals and staging anyway). I can also understand you like Portugal’s song (I used to as well). Now tell me how is It possible that Bulgaria and Azerbaijan will even qualify: boring, boring songs!

This may be a very unpopular opinion, but I actually enjoy Spain the most from these videos. it looks fresh and smooth, it gives me summer vibes, while Italy is a little bit messy, there is too much going on and francescco’s dance and movements stress me out. but well, italian song is much better and that is the most important element. ukraine looks good, and being the only rock act will benefit them

I dont’ like much the Spanish entry, but I think they did a rather good job with the staging as it perfectly fits the song. That’s what a staging is supposed to do.

I want to slap one of the backing vocalists of Francesco. For god’s sake, that’s a very simple CHOREOGRAPHY and still you flop!!!!!

Italy just needs some lighting changes, to create more contrast between Gabbani/gorilla and the stage, and the camera angles.
Not sure if we’re going to win without singing in English =/
