Following the two semi-finals of Eurovision 2017, the qualifying artists each drew “first half” or “second half” slots from an oversized fish bowl.

And tonight producers finally revealed the grand final running order, which they developed to create the most entertaining show possible. Part of that means providing a degree of variation in genre and feel, rather than, for instance, giving us six ballads in a row.

UA:PBC, the host broadcaster, drafted the running order, which was then approved by Jon Ola Sand (the EBU Executive Supervisor) and Dr. Frank-Dieter Freiling, the Chairman of the Reference Group.

Israel’s Imri Ziv closed his semi-final on Thursday. But on Saturday he’ll open the show with his song “I Feel Alive”. It makes sense — the song is upbeat and he’s easy on the eyes, both of which will help draw viewers in and hopefully keep them there. This marks the second year in a row that an act closing their semi-final will open the grand final. Belgium’s Laura Tesoro did so last year (and she also from the second semi-final).

Eurovision 2017: Grand final running order

  1. Israel
  2. Poland
  3. Belarus
  4. Austria
  5. Armenia
  6. The Netherlands
  7. Moldova
  8. Hungary
  9. Italy
  10. Denmark
  11. Portugal
  12. Azerbaijan
  13. Croatia
  14. Australia
  15. Greece
  16. Spain
  17. Norway
  18. United Kingdom
  19. Cyprus
  20. Romania
  21. Germany
  22. Ukraine
  23. Belgium
  24. Sweden
  25. Bulgaria
  26. France

Does the running order tell us anything?

It’s obviously a guessing game at this point, as we can never really know the producers’ motivations. But that won’t prevent us from making a few guesses.

Italy, the pre-contest favourite, will sing in ninth position, while Portugal, who has stolen much of the momentum in recent days, performs just two spots later in eleventh. The contrast between the two acts is stark — from upbeat Francesco Gabbani with his colourful and deliberately cutesy staging to Salvador’s pared-back and simple performance.

Dividing them is Denmark’s Anja Nissen, who could be considered something of a sacrificial lamb. Her song’s many vocal flourishes may leave viewers exasperated and in need of a cool down, making them ripe to listen to Portugal’s soothing melody.

Australia, which drew second half, has been put on as early as possible, which may mean he barely scraped through his semi-final.

The United Kingdom’s Lucie Jones appears to have been given a favourable position. She sings 18th — the exact same spot as pre-contest favourite Sergey Lazarev last year. She’s also sandwiched between Norway and Cyprus — two borderline qualifiers with songs that sound nothing like her musical theatre-esque number “Never Give Up On You”.

Many in the press room have suggested that Romania’s cartoon graphics and playful sound will appeal to children and younger voters. Putting them on so late in the running order — 20th — may work against that. However, it could also be a sign they did rather well in the televote.

Interestingly, the countries in 23, 24 and 25 — Belgium, Sweden and Bulgaria — were all pre-contest favourites, suggesting they may have lived up to the the hype in their semis.

That Bulgaria has been given the next-to-last spot, with only Big 5 nation France singing afterwards, suggests he won his semi-final.

During the last years, the standardization of the musical production presented in Eurovision increased at the same time that the stage paraphernalia, the choreographies and the spectacularization of the presentations grew. It’s true that the Eurovision Song Contest has always had something of a kitsch, which is part of its identity and should continue to be. The problem is that it has become “kitsch trying to look modern”, which, let’s face it, it’s not interesting. In Eurovision we are so used to so much plastic and make-up that when we see skin and a beating heart, we are instantly moved.… Read more »

As a swede I hope that Robin Bengtsson will be in the top 5 tomorrow, at least in top 10. But the winner? Is it Italy or Portugal? The answer is – Bulgaria.

I agree. He stands out, will get both jury and televote. Also he really bridges the East and West, unlike Francesco or Salvador. I think Armenia is underrated and with the staging and the disapora will do better than predicted. But Kris has a great place in the running order and Blanche will be overshadowed by him.

Blanche song is great but her performance is dull, after her comes Robin who has nothing to loose (but wont win) and will outshine Blanche. After that the stage is all Kristians, tada! The winner takes it all! And the extrem italy and portugese fans will be shocked when they favorites end up in 5 th and 3 rd place. This is my prediction.

Absolutely not! Most overrated is Portugal (hope he doesn’t win, then next year will be a sleeping pill-contest again). Same as this year after Jamala victory. Prefer Italy in front of Portugal, will be more action then next years action. But I am quite sure that Bulgaria wins tomorrow.

There are some great songs this year! I really hope everyone votes purely for the best performances – best singing voice, staging, song, entertainment, rather than sometimes basing it on which countries neighbour each other. For example, Lucie has one of, if not the best voice and staging, in the contest – this is purely an example – A lot of voices and performances stand out – I hope they are get the result they deserve.

What ever song they put second last is a song they don’t expect to do well, just look at Joe and Jake, Elhaida Dani, Valentina Monetta and Nodi Tatishvili and Sophie Gelovani. None fared well with the votes.

He’s not making fun of Eurovision. He’s having fun with Eurovision, in his own very particular way. And sharing it with the audience. He hates to rehearse the same song ever and ever again, so he’s using the least important rehearsals to have fun and be less serious. That’s what jazz musicians usually do. He already stated that he wants to win, but that the MUSIC (the lyrical, melodic and emotional content of it) is the most important thing after all, and that’s what he’s focused on delivering tomorrow. Well, he did it already last Tuesday, or were you watching… Read more »

He does care, he’s just having fun. A person shouldn’t have fun in what they’re doing? He did what he did in the last rehearsal because he’s tired of singing it always the same way, in the interviews I do not see anything wrong, he is like he always is.
And people vote in whoever they want, not because you said no to…
Shouldn’t you focus on support Italy? Not sharing hate comments about the other singers/songs? It’s starting to be rediculous…

I agree in the fact that I don’t want Salvador to win. However I don’t want him to win because although his song is lovely, it’s not the style of music that Eurovision should be heading towards. Eurovision needs to modernise if it wishes to remain as popular as it currently is. Jamala winning last year was a big blow to the contest’s credibility as a contest for modern music. We can see the result with the lack of modern songs this year. Having two winners, one after the other, not with modern songs is a bad message. If Portugal… Read more »

Okay I have finally come to a disappointing realisation, well for most of you anyway. I created a playlist with all the full song performances in the correct running order and damn did it teach me some things. After watching all 26 the only song I can remember from the first half is Moldova. Italy and Portugal I’m afraid to say just faded. In the second half the UK really shines in spot 18 and is certainly in with a fighting chance tbh. Romania was incredible which left Germany and Ukraine looking terrible. One thing you do need to take in consideration, are the mini breaks. There is a large break between 17. Norway and 18.united kingdom.

I don’t know if having a break before you is a good or bad? I always thought it would be good thing because they get refreshed from constant songs. I don’t think it is that much of problem though. Not as bad as going first or last. Apparently the United Kingdom put in a request to go in somewhere near a mini break.

With the running order now revealed. Here is my Final take on what’s going to happen: Portugal and the UK are the two Jury favourites (1st and 2nd in the jury vote respectively), and seeing as Portugal is performing in 11th and the UK in 18th they have the best chances for huge televote scores as well, also before you start quoting Brexit and other UK politics may I just remind you that countries like Russia and Azerbaijan have bigger political issues than the UK and they usually score Top 8 every year, so enough with politics affecting ESC. As much as I want UK to win I really cannot see it happening. I think top 5 is possible IF the televoters get behind us but it usually takes an awful lot for that to happen. Portugal have now over taken Italy in the odds, I won’t be surprised if they win. I also think Bulgaria can win but it’s not one of my personal faves. In any case, I think we (UK) can be proud of our entry and it’s going to be a fantastic show for sure!!

The advantage will unfortunately come from friends:

Belgium’s friends: HOL, fra.
Italy’s friends: MAL, ALB, swi, sma, mon.
Portugal’s friends: ESP, FRA, SWI.
Sweden’s friends: NOR, FIN, DEN, ICE, uk, ire, est, lat.

Bulgaria’s traditional friends: MAC, GRE, CYP, rom, slo, srb + Bulgaria’s new friends (Russian diaspora up for grabs): BLR, UKR, MLD, ARM, AZB, ISR, est, lat, lit, geo.

With 16 country friends in ESC2017, this tedious forgettable song will likely be the winner. ?

i’m not expecting the televote to shift from your own country to someone who was born in your country but competes for another.. also: you’re completely wrong about France and Belgium. Belgium’s best friend in recent years actually is Australia ?

My winners are Portugal and Belgium: quality songs, tastefull staging and tons of authenticity! Even if they don’t win the whole thing.

UK won’t win. As much as the staging is good, the song is forgettable and Lucie doesn’t stand out among several female ballads. Top ten? Surely, but it’d be pretty impossible for her to pull off a win. And I think Francesco will be in the top #3 for the televoting, the song was a hit before and people will remember it regardless of the running order (a dancing gorilla? Catchy song? Those dance moves? There is no way they’re going to forget). Portugal is much more divisive btw.

Have to agree. Not enough people will like the song for it to be a contender. I can see possibly top 7 with juries and maybe 15th-ish with televote so we’ll probably and hopefully finish around 9th-13th. Plus despite everyone saying we got a good placement, our odds have risen. Portugal/Italy/Bulgaria for the win

Gabbani is a charasmatic performer who knows his audience, he will have his audience in his hands that’s for sure. The dancing ape is infectious! The song “Occidentali Karma” will certainly not be forgotten. It never really has since winning San Remo with the increasing momentum it has so far, it’s Gabbani’s to lose that’s for certain in my own opinion.

I am actually horrified about all the support for the Bulgaria’s song and the fact that many people think it might actually win!!! It’s not a bad song, but it’s soooooo generic!!!! When you have Portugal, Italy or Belgium (with a good live performance) in the final, all very good and unique songs / voices, Bulgaria’s win would be a travesty! Didn’t the UK perform 25th last year and come next to last with the televote? Can’t blame them, although the song was terrible, they will never qualify ever again. I think countries like San Marino, Ireland, FYR Macedonia, need to leave. Ok, the best 2 songs of the entire thing, in my opinion, are Portugal and Italy, for entirely different reasons as they are obviously not similar at all. There should be the UK or Bulgaria instead of Spain, but hell no, some countries are more appreciated than others, so we should give them a better spot, no matter that three dance songs are in a row.

I feel as if I found a kindred spirit in my feelings toward Portugal. I really don’t think it deserves to win.

I don’t enjoy Portugal either. It’s not bad, but it’s nothing unique, nothing interesting, I’ve heard it all before, classic lovesong with predictable lyrics. He is a lovely singer though.

I think that the winner will be among italy, portugal and Bulgaria. Italy: Radio friendly song, funny, nice presentation. Will propably be in the top 3 of televoting and top 3 of juries. Portugal: Unique song with a moving voice. The simplicity of the presantation can move anybody imo. Top 3 of televoting, propably will be top 2 (1 imo) with the juries. Bulgaria: Radio friendly song and great voice. It’s the only song that has the ppssibility to top both juries and trlevoting due to the absence of Russia and former yogoslavic countries. Only romania can stand on his… Read more »

Does anyone know when the Grand Final Jury rehearsal takes place? The rehearsal when the Jury votes on the show?

1 Israel – Never mind toned body – where’s the vocalist? 2 Poland – Respectable – but like a heavy pudding 3 Belarus – Wave your hands – then what? 4 Austria – A wonderful soufflé with stunning, consistent voclas! 5 Armenia – Ok, but seen it all before 6 The Netherlands – Never boring – again magical vocals! 7 Moldova – One-trick pony – NEXT! 8 Hungary – Beautiful – don’t like the rapping. 9 Italy – Go for it, Francesco – you truly deserve your win! 10 Denmark – Screaming and more screaming – where’s the tune? 11… Read more »

Pffft okay girl. Norway top 5? Another generic dance song that lacks substance, yeah we need more of that.

Bulgaria will get the votes that Russia would get. He is russian after all.

And also famous in Eastern Europe. It just makes sense for them to vote Bulgaria.

Portugal may hope to get some televotes from Western European countries but that won’t suffice. If Portugal doesn’t win jury vote, that’s the end of a possible win.

I think that jury favourites, Italy and Portugal (from what it seems), may split the votes but then Bulgaria could come in 3rd for jury votes and then win public vote, thus winning the competition.

LUCIE JONES UNITED KINGDOM?

I am hoping for a top 5 finish for the United Kingdom. Then if that didn’t come to fruition, I wouldn’t mind a top 10 finish. I remember when jade ewen came 5th, I was very happy with that result.

Lucie jones has been bouncing around between 5th & 6th in the bookies. I think the uks belief in political voting, is stoping them from reaching a higher position. They also have a good placing.

Do you think it’s possible for the United Kingdom to come in the TOP 10? Or even Top 5?

Totally! That song is top 5, IMO. And the stage performance is mesmerizing. Portugal and Italy have already stolen a lot of hearts, but for the ones in doubt, UK will be a choice.

This is the first year since I’ve been following Eurovision that my two favorite songs are both considered contenders: Portugal and Italy. I would be happy to see either of of them win, but Ultimately my heart is with Portugal. Seeing that they are both in the first half of the show, I started wondering how likely is it that they could place 1st and 2nd, or if not that, at least both in the top 3. Hoping to find some fuel for optimism, I did a late night analysis of the top 10 songs -and their running orders –… Read more »

In my opinion Belgium will stay safe there. Rock song isn’t for everyone, swedish song won’t exceed expectations because of weak singer. However, bulgarian guy will benefit the most there.
