Occidentalli's Karma

In this year’s sea of 42 acts, a handful stand out for the way they work their tongue. And by tongue we mean their native language. Italy’s Francesco Gabbani, France’s Alma, Portugal’s Salvador Sobral, Hungary’s Joci Papai, Belarus’ Naviband and Spain’s Manel Navarro have all chosen to sing all or at least a majority of their song in a language other than English. To them we say bonjour, ciao and hola!

Earlier in the spring we launched a poll asking you to have a listen — Google Translate optional — and to let us know your favourites. After counting 7,445 votes, we can now reveal that Italy’s “Occidentalli’s Karma” is your favourite non-English song of Eurovision 2017.

Francesco Gabbani: “Occidentalli’s Karma” dress rehearsal

Francesco amassed 2,164 votes — or around 29% of the overall vote. We’ve evolved from the ape — and our readers are feeling that connection.

The Italian singer and his gorilla secured 500 more votes than runner-up Alma from France.

A total of 1,629 of you wanted to smile in the middle of a “Requiem” with the French starlet. That’s around 22% of the total vote.

Alma “Requiem” dress rehearsal

Rounding out the top three is the Portuguese sensation Salvador Sobral, who received 1,490 votes, or around 20% of the overall vote.

The oddsmakers are currently going crazy for Portugal — he’s narrowing on Italy for the win. And our readers will surely be happy because of that.

Salvador Sobral: “Amar pelos dois” dress rehearsal

Hungary’s Joci Pápai came fourth in the poll. His ethno number “Origo” convinced 1,011 of you. That translates to around 14% of the total vote for the Romani singer.

Joci Pápai: “Origo” dress rehearsal

In fifth place there’s Belarus’ Naviband. Their happy-clappy “Historija mayho zyccia” received 873 votes — around 12%.

Naviband: “Story of my life” dress rehearsal

Last but not least, Spain’s Manel Navarro finished in sixth place, with 278 votes or around 4%.

Manel Navarro: “Do it for your lover” rehearsal

Upcoming New Releases: Going with the same concept above, if you have a
buddy in radio or are only really ahead from the curve musically, you may develop a site that lists and describes the
upcoming new album releases. Readers will move towards other blogs, that will help them to complete their requirements.
Would your hard work start a whole new perspective or would
it not just invoke a ‘what’s new’ response.

Thank you for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbor were just preparing to do some research about this. We got a grab a book from our local library but I think I learned more clear from this post. I’m very glad to see such wonderful information being shared freely out there.

I don’t see Europe completely falling under charm of Salvador. I don’t see waterfall of 12’s for him. He will get couple for sure. Italy too. But this year it’s gonna be surprise – some stuff almost no-one predicts to win. It’s gonna decide until the last set of results.

I’ve Italy from the first moment I heard it. Fun, clever and extremely catchy. I’ve also loved France from day one. It’s got an eastern pop influence which I like and it could garner votes from everywhere. Portugal I also loved from the beginning. It’s old school style and feel good factor will bound people to nostalgia in the face of all the political madness going on. A throw back to less complicated days. I would love these songs to be in the top 3. Possible wishful thinking but let’s hope. I will put my neck on the line and… Read more »

Gimmicks should be banned, no gorillas or treadmills, comedy acts like Romania and Croatia should be banned too. EBU must create a list with genres allowed, no fast-food pop, or dated songs, only quality music like Amar Pelos Dois. Also we need a proper dress code, transparent shirts like Imri or Slavko had should be banned, also miniskirts. Eurovision is not a place to show your skin, the new Eurovision dress code must bring back decency, fully clothed men like Salvador Sobral, and virtuous women like Luisa Sobral. Remember that is a family show and a high standard must be… Read more »

I’m thinking the green room might have to go, as the artists don’t need to be present anyway. All songs should be performed by the same 3-4 artists, hand picked for their high level of sophistication, + live orchestra to safeguard the integrity of the music.

And because music is an universal language, each country must send songs with words that nobody understands. Pyros and smoke machines should be banned, this is not a circus.

Indeed, it’s called Eurovision SONG Contest after all.
On a related note, why isn’t anyone honoring the Greek Gods at the Olympic Games anymore? I mean, it’s right there in the name. Now it’s all about easy to digest ‘sports’ and who can run the fastest etc.
We live in very dark times indeed. People are so out of touch.

Polls do tend to change. I expect it to change several times until tommorow. Italy has been much less exposed than Italy, of course the polls will notice it. Based on how rehersals are going tonight, and jury voting later I expect Italy will be slipping back up again a few times.

Bulgaria is going to win… people will find Italy and Portugal “safe”, jury splits votes between them and then Eastern Europe votes for Bulgaria and he wins.. just look at Jamala… it was a battle between Australia and Russia… and then..

A couple of days ago, I though Portugal would win as the song had gained so much momentum and Francesco didn’t deliver (vocally speaking) during the first semi-final, but after watching the second dress rehearsal, where he was way more polished and his voice was much stronger, I feel he could take it. Perhaps he won’t win by a landslide as we initially predicted, since the running order doesn’t particularly help him, but it could happen. And I think Bulgaria might get a second place.

Luckily, O.K. will still be the great song it is, even if it doesn’t win. And it’s about non-English songs here, anyway: your beloved Bulgaria didn’t even have the guts to sing in their own language. So what’s your point?
