He’s the “Occidentali’s Karma” singer who has been the front-runner to win Eurovision 2017 for months.

And on Saturday our readers gave Italy’s Francesco Gabbani their final seal of approval, naming him their favourite to win tonight in Kyiv.

Our readers cast a total of 41,069 votes and the Italian stallion trotted away with 3,745 of them — or around 9%. Ahead of Eurovision the studio version of his song also won top marks from the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals. As one of our jurors wrote in March:

‘Occidentali’s Karma’ ticks so many boxes — I need several pens and one very large scroll to evaluate it. Contemporary yet somehow throwback, its digital opening gives way to an orchestral sound accented with drum and guitar. The chorus is an ear worm of the first order and, despite the explicit social critique, the song remains uplifting and radio-friendly. Perfectly pitched and delivered with unrivalled charisma, it’s a light song with a weighty message, and it speeds by in a whoosh of smiles and tapping feet. A deserving and likely winner.

We should note that the vast majority of votes in this poll came prior to rehearsals, meaning our readers were primarily judging the studio versions of the songs, rather than the on-stage presentation that most viewers will see this evening.

Perhaps owing to months of overwhelming hype, Italy has fallen slightly with the bookies and our own panel of critics, who think his staging has moved from classy and quirky to somewhat forced and circus-like. In so many ways he now seems like a warm-up act for surging rival Salvador Sobral, who performs two spots later. No matter. Those seeing the performance for the first time will likely be won over by his charisma, smokey vocals and playful expressions.

In second place is Bulgaria’s Kristian Kostov, who stands alone in a monochrome dreamscape, singing about the horrors of the world and his search for peace and solace. The Bulgarian-Kazakh singer, who was born and raised in Moscow, should get a slight boost from the Russian diaspora, owing to Russia’s absence from the contest and Dima Bilan’s public endorsement of the singer.

In our poll he earned 3,188 votes — or around 8% — putting him very close to Italy.

Our readers seem to think the grand final will be boys’ night, as Portugal’s Salvador Sobral rounds out our Top 3.

The “Amar peolos dois” singer earned 2,510 votes — or around 6%. He’s been at something of a disadvantage in our poll, as he missed the first week of rehearsals owing to ongoing health issues, forcing his sister Luisa to sing in his place.

But from the moment he landed in Kyiv and took the stage his odds have narrowed and his song’s chances of winning have grown and grown, leaving us speechless with each rehearsal.

Poll results: Who should win Eurovision 2017?

  1. Italy: Francesco Gabbani, “Occidentali’s Karma” 9.12% (3,745 votes)

I’ve been such a big fan of wiwibloggs and I think you guys have done a great job. Particularly allowing people to see and discuss so many facets of the ESC. The witty humour and the joy and excitement of the bloggers has made this become so popular. However, I’m rather disappointed with what has been happening in the past few weeks. As we are getting closer to the big night, instead of bringing more joy and reasons to remember this is a celebration and not a ‘competition’ of who’s the best, f*** the rest, the reports have become rather… Read more »

HANDS DOWN to your comment – I wouldn’t have said it any better!!! You nailed it at: “Look at the contestants, how well they get along with each other, support each other and so on. It is a lucky year anyway as all favourites have something special to offer, whether we like the songs or not. Portugal simplicity, Italy joyfulness and clever irony, Bulgaria young talent, Belgium most contemporary/modern cool sound and a genuine performer, even Romania made a kitsch be so much fun and hard not to make you smile. So please don’t take the joy out of it… Read more »

I´m bitterly disappointed that Estonia didn`t get to the final, so I´m not voting for anybody tonight. Of all the songs in the final I like Bulgaria the most but I wish Italy would win because Francesco has better chances to beat Portugal. Portugal is one of my least favourites this year. I would prefer Croatia over him any time!

Best comment here (and SO TRUE): “Congrats to all Francesco’s “fans” who abandoned him now. He kept the language, the gorilla, the colours for you. Now you’re calling him “fast food”.” Shame on all of you! For saying out loud for months that he was THE winner, that he brought something different from the oh-so-boring-old-love-love-peace-peace ballads and all the diva shouting, that it had the most clever & current lyirics and uplifting vibe; for praising Gabbani and putting him on a pedestal as quickly as you now get tired of it. Well done. That’s what you get when you’re flooded… Read more »

I think that’s what happens when you live in the ESC bubble for to long: You get tired of the favourite and just wish he wouldn’t win because of that. It’s nothing new. In 2012 and 2013 fans were tired of Loreen and Emmelie before they even arrived on stage..
They won, and I think Gabbani wil win too.

But only Salvador fans call Gabbani fast food entry. Shame that they have to discredit other acts.

Denis, you’re right. But I know many portuguese who love Italy’s song and many Italians who love salvador’s song. But they don’t represent the universe of the average Eurofan, I guess… And those who live in the ESC bubble, as you said so well…
And yes, it drives me nuts to see people automatically being haters of other acts, just to praise the ones they support.
Like you said, there’s no need to discredit other acts! It shouldn’t be the spirit of it all. But, hey, that’s the era we’re living in… sadly.

Bruno @ Geeky Explorer

Who would’ve thought that after months with a clear favorite we’d arrive to the day of the final with a 3 (or 4) horse race? These are my predictions for tonight: Top 3 Jury: 1.Portugal, 2.Bulgaria, 3.UK/Belgium Portugal and Bulgaria slayed yesterday. Italy has become to much of a gimmick/novelty for the jury vote in my opinion. Top 3 Televote: 1.Bulgaria, 2. Italy, 3. Portugal Everyone’s underrating the power of the east block. With Russia out of the equation, pretty much all of the “usual” USSR votes will land in Bulgaria. Italy has been a chart success for months. Portugal… Read more »

For me the winner is definitely Bulgaria! Italy is good but since Francesco’s win in San Remo I heard his song so many times that it became just boring to me, when Beautiful Mess is still great even after multiple playings. In the final I support Bulgaria, Romania, Poland and The Netherlands.
But we all know that the battle for winning is between Italy, Bulgaria and Portugal… 😉

I am still a strong believer that Italy will win this. The thing is, Italy’s performance didn’t live up to the Eurovision fans’ expectations who loved the studio version and the music video. However the Eurovision audience tonight consists of probably 90% of people who have never heard any of the songs before and that is where Italy profits. The song is still super catchy and will most likely be appreciated by the voters. My personal favorite since the rehearsals is Bulgaria, but I’m still pretty sure Italy will win. (Unless we have a Jamala situation where Italy wins the… Read more »

Costa, it’s not only about the voice. I can easily ask if Salvador has stronger voice than for example Jacque from Croatia or Anja from Denmark or Omar from Slovenia? Nope, his voice is weaker, but you like the charm in Salvador’s voice and the vibes that his performance gives you. The same with Francesco, his voice is not the strongest but it has a charm in it, the song is pure class, the way he behaves on the scene, how he interacts with the audience, the vibes it gives you, it all makes you fall in love with the… Read more »

Isn’t it ironic?
Fans, including the readers here on wiwibloggs praised Italy to the skies. They made him keep the ape, and the language when it was suggested he would like some English in it.
Now they all want him not to win? What do you want exactly?

It’s difficult when you live in the ESC bubble and get bored of songs all the time Easy to forget how dominant Gabbani has been this season.

Call me naive, but there is still a bit of lingering hope that Italy might pull this off. I don’t think it could win by a landslide as we first thought, but it was winning material before and it still is. The press loved it, the audience will remember it by the end of the performances (regardless of the running order, there’s a dancing gorilla, I mean) and hopefully the juries voted for it. I’d be the second time in three years that Italy wins the televoting but lose because of the juries, and I’d be pretty pissed. Also, if… Read more »

It has come down to three for me Italy (although it has fallen behind Portugal with the Bookies since last night), Portugal (there’s just a force getting behind this now and perhaps we will see the ens of the longest run of outs) or Bulgaria (with youth behind him).
Belgium could an outsider with a shot and maybe United Kingdom could surprise us all tonight.

First, I believe the winner will be a man this year!

Now, Italy is my favourite the whole eurovision period! I’ve heard it a million times and I’m not tired or bored at all! It stands out, it’s happy, cheerful! After last year, we need sth happier!

However, I’d love to see Portugal or Bulgaria or Belgium win! In my personal opinion, I’d also love to see France win, but it’s unlikely to happen!

At this moment, I’ve narrowed the possible winners to 2: Italy and Portugal! It’s gonna be between them tonight!

May the best act win!

I hope that everybody that is in love with Salvador’s song, votes as many times as they can.
As a peripheral country it is very difficult for Portugal to win the televote, (don´t have the bloc vote of neighbours, such as the Nordic countries, Balkans, central Europe, etc. )
Lisbon 2018 would be a perfect ESC avenue! 🙂

Can I put a word in for poor Omar Naber, who is bottom of your poll. He sang flawlessly. We didn’t need to wonder if the big notes were coming from a backing singer. He connected well with the camera. We didn’t have to watch him twitch and throw his head around at random. As we prepare to close the folder containing Eurovision 2017, Omar deserves a little more credit.

If Italy or Portugal wins it will be the Jamala situation all over again… Winner song that no one will even remember by Monday.

Why? I think both are pretty memorable. And Jamala didn’t do quite well in the charts, but Portugal, Belgium, Bulgaria and Italia are all charting in several countries

Italy’s entry is radio-friendly and catchy, I am convinced it won’t go down the same route of Ukraine last year. It was a hit before Eurovision, and it will get even more coverage tonight, so it’s not going anywhere. 1944 was first of all a strong political statement, and there is no way radios would pass that. Portugal is a slow ballad but it doesn’t seem like the kind of song that would become a hit.

Italy has already charted in several countries and is huge on both Spotify and YT. it was a hit before the contest and it will be even bigger after tonight.

Jamala was different because it wasn’t a radio song. It was an artistic song, not for radio. Of course she wouldn’t be a hit because those kind of songs aren’t fit for commercial radio.

That’s if Bulgaria wins. Even after listening to it so many times now, I cannot really remember it….

Now let’s hope the “real” Europe has the same good taste as the readers!

I dont think Italy will win. I think Portugal or Bulgaria are more likely. But I will be rooting for Sweden and Belgium.

If Italy or Portugal wins their songs will be forgotten about by Monday
