Along with the excitement of tonight’s big win for Portugal, the voting results of the semi-finals have also been released. It confirms that grand final winner Portugal won the first semi-final, while runner-up Bulgaria won the second. But as we can see from the jury/televote split, other results weren’t so clearcut.

Semi-final one

Not surprisingly, the winner of the first semi-final was Portugal, with 370 points. Salvador topped both the jury and the televote, making him the unanimous winner.

In second place was Moldova with 291 points. They were a bigger favourite in the televote results giving them second place with 180 points, but they only managed fourth place in the jury vote with 111 points.

In third place was Sweden, with 227 points. Robin Bengtsson was a favourite with the jury who also ranked him third with 124 points. Televoters ranked him fourth with 103 points.

Belgium‘s Blanche placed fourth with 164 points, but there was a difference of opinion with the jury and televote. The jury only gave her 40 points, in 13th place, while viewers were much more impressed and put Blanche in third place with 125 points.

Armenia‘s Artsvik — who going into the semi had been considered a strong contender to win — only managed seventh place with 152 points.

Australia was a big hit with juries, who placed Isaiah second with 139 points. But the bum note in his semi-final performance was off-key with televoters who placed him 15th with only 21 points. The combined score of 160 was enough to save Australia in sixth place.

Unlucky 11th place went to Georgia. Tamara Gachechiladze had 99 points, just 16 away from beating Greece to tenth place.

Fan favourite Finland placed 12th with 92 points. Norma John would have qualified had it been down to televotes alone – they placed tenth with the public on 51 points. Sadly the jury ranked them 12th with 41 points, taking them out of the overall top ten.

Latvia placed last in the first semi-final with only 21 points for Triana Park. They earned only one point from the juries and a slightly more generous 20 points from the televote.

Semi-final two

Bulgaria won the second semi-final wth 403 points. Kristian Kostov was the unanimous winner of both the jury vote and the televote – that’s 199 points and 204 points respectively.

Hungary placed second in the semi-final with 231 points. Joci Papai’s ethno rap was a hit with televoters who placed him second with 165 points. However, juries were less enthused. They ranked him seventh with only 66 points.

Israel was third with 207 points. In a piece of curious Eurovision scoring, Israel was fourth with the televote on 132 points and sixth with the juries on 75 points. Norway was the jury’s third place fave, while televoters put Romania third. They cancelled each other out, which put Israel third in the overall results.

Fan favourite Estonia was a hit with televoters. Koit Toome and Laura were placed sixth in the televote with 69 points. But the jury was much less impressed. They gave Estonia only 16 points, meaning an overall rank of 14th with 85 points.

Narrowly missing out was Serbia in 11th place with 98 points, just four points away from beating Denmark in tenth place. Switzerland was also close to qualification with 97 points.

Denmark was also more a favourite with the jury. Anja received 96 points from the jury, who ranked her fourth. But televoters were much less impressed. They awarded Denmark only five points, meaning a rank of only 16th. But without those five points, Denmark would not have qualified for the final – every point counts!

San Marino was bottom of the second semi with only one point, due to a generous televote score. Juries awarded San Marino nil points.

And the curse of Malta struck again. For another year they proved themselves a big favourite only with juries. Claudia Faniello’s ballad placed eight in the jury vote with 55 points. But sadly televoters weren’t fans. Malta earned nil points from the televote, resulting in an overall rank of 16th.

Along with every little thing which seems to be developing throughout this specific subject material, all your opinions happen to be quite refreshing. However, I beg your pardon, because I can not subscribe to your entire idea, all be it stimulating none the less. It would seem to me that your remarks are generally not totally rationalized and in actuality you are generally yourself not completely convinced of the assertion. In any case I did enjoy examining it.

Hi,
I have a doubt about the popular system vote.
What happen when some country vote 10 times for a country and then 10 times for another country? Example: If Spain called 10 times for the sweden’s song and then 10 times for the UK’s song, wich one of them take the popular vote??

Kristian has more points then Jamala 2016, Conchita 2014, Emmelie de Forest 2013, Ell & Nikki 2011, Lena 2010 … More even than Dima Bilan 2008 😉 And more … So Bravo ….

My family’s reaction on the Grand final: Most of us enjoyed Hungary for being different. No one was impressed with Moldova. “Tasteless” performance. Italy generated a big cheer and several “Finally something good!” One person liked Portugal, the rest thought it was just boring. Azerbaijan was “interesting” but not really “good”, strange performance. Romania laughable to some but most thought it was painful to listen to. Belgium was “good song but no winner”, one persons favourite! Sweden generated a big cheer from the female part of the family (lol). Most of us liked Bulgaria and France as well. Italy was… Read more »

Just wanted to compare youtube likes (likes minus dislikes) with actual Eurovision results. – First the real shockers: Macedonia and Serbia! They didn’t qualify for the final but have the 11th and 14th highest youtube likes of all the songs! On the other hand Croatia qualifying and ending 13th in the final but on youtube they are just 30th for the number of likes! Bulgaria ending 2nd in the final but 15th by youtube likes! – Belgium is currently absolute winner in youtube likes (67k likes vs 5k dislikes) while Portugal comes second (77k likes vs 23k dislikes). – Cyprus… Read more »

Is it just me or did Armenia get ROYALLY SCREWED this year? I mean going into the finals everyone thought it was a top 5 material but only managed to place 18th? Same with Israel. Finished 3rd in the semi and like 21 or something in the final. WTF? I’m working on my full analysis of the contest, but countries that performed in the beginning massively went unnoticed.

As an American watching Eurovision in America , I was astounded that Portugal and Bulgaria were the top 2 acts, Yes, both performances were good, but both were just rehashings of music and styles we’ve seen for years — performed by adorable boys. Watch out Europe, you are falling onto that seemingly sweet trap that brought to us an era of music where Justin Bieber and the Jonas Brothers were considered great talents and screaming pubescent girls became the ultimate arbiter of excellent music. I (and the fellow Americans that watched with me) all felt that Italy and Croatia presented… Read more »

That sounds like the place to be! I live in DC and watched it at home with an ever-increasing gang of friends who, like me, thought “Euro What?” a few years ago and now would not miss it for any reason! Props to Precint for daring to present some spectacular, not-the-usual-fare entertainment.

I live in the States too, in San Diego to be precise, and I cannot disagree more with you. Kristian and Salvador are as far from the generally shallow American music here, as it can be. Both of them have depth and sensitivity and the gift to move people with their performances. I have to congratulate Europe on their taste this year.

No? Is this some kind of final verdict? I say yes, thank God Eurovision is not another American show and thank God the winners are not another copycat of a mainstream American song. It would certainly have failed if it was imitating the States.
I would say that the two entries which were markedly American — Lucy and Isaiah, predictably failed to make the left side of the board. For me, this year Europe really nailed it, as both Salvador and Kristian placed 1st and 2nd respectively with a huge lead in the votes.

ESC post-mortem: Biggest surprise: Moldova getting third place overall. I actually enjoyed their performance, but…. Biggest disappointment: Italy getting 6th overall, and not placing top 3 in the tele-vote. It has been and remains my favourite. Portugal’s song was lovely, but not my cup of tea. Francesco definitely warranted better–even my friends who aren’t ESC fans agree. 🙂 Biggest shock: Australia only getting 2 points from the tele-vote, but doing very well with the jury. Such a contrast to last year where they got 4th in tele-vote. Food for thought…. Biggest confirmation: Germany and Spain finishing at bottom of the… Read more »

Italy is my favourite song by miles and I was disappointed that it had been the favourite by miles for months and I’m baffled as to how it didn’t reach the top 3 at the very least! Portugal is nice enough but pretty dull! Songs usually get stick if they sound dated, but this is straight from the 1950s! The song doesn’t even go anywhere – it’s all on one level. Don’t know how it did so well. Australia’s contrast was really weird. The… Read more »

Can you write an article about what’s the purpose of juries? Because honestly I don’t understand. Estonia was without its neighbours in second semi final. Got well deserved 6th place and didn’t get in final because of juries. Austria and Denmark didn’t even made to top 10 although they even had their neighbours there to vote for them and juries sent them to final. This year when they added juries to the compatition they said it will avoid political voting. I have been following results many years and to me it seems that non-political voting suffers the most.

Apparently the purpose of the juries was to balance so-called “populist” “joke” acts from doing well or winning, and to bring some form of professionalism to the contest. However, my take is that sometimes they are simply too biased and prejudiced and easily manipulated to vote politically–2016 was easily the best example with Russia. Personally, though I can see the logic in using them, I also think having a mere 5 jurors from each country deciding 50% of the vote is elitist and prone corruption/political voting, etc. The jury system needs some kind of revamp/overhaul to either lessen their power… Read more »

the fact foreign juries don´t like Verona was visible before it won Eesti Laul, Polina and the bald jewish guy gave top points to Rasmus. but 6th in televote from the countries that could vote is good, considering our “besties” were in the other semi. First of all, as much as I am not a fan of this year’s overall Portuguese package, I love to see Portugal winning – they have been waiting for it to happen since 1964! This alone is amazing. However, I would connect their triumph more with the general socio-hiPsterical imperatives of the modern society (which Salvador meets impeccably) than with the song’s likeability as such. Everything about this performer smells of fakeness to me. Still, happy for the Portuguese nation. As for the rest, I still don’t know how I feel about the final results. Unfortunately, it’s not quite true Adriana. Sweden has won 6 times & thus hosted the contest 6 times but only in 2000, 2013 & 2016 (when they hosted the contest), Portugal withdrew. However when they withdrew in 2000, they were forced to do so because of the old rule : between 1994 & 2003, the EBU decided to force the withdrawal of countries who had the worst average results for a period of time. So for Portugal they took part in 1999 but because their average results were one of the lowest, they couldn’t take part in 2000. But in… Read more »

I really don’t get what’s the problem with counting the votes of the juries on the night. So it’s easier to count and assess the votes of millions that voted of the night, but it’s some impossible task to make the final ranking of just FIVE people in the jury …

Computers do all the work. The problem is logistics. Since the jury voting takes place the day before and the announcement takes 1 hour. It’s more than enough time to count the televotes.
If both jury and public voted the same night. Like Ola mentioned. The show would take 6 hours

No, the jury just has to get less power. Placing Belgium that low and in the televotes it rose like phoenix (pun intended). Same with Australia and Austria: they got the lowest points but they didn’t end last which is not really democratic, is it?
I mean, Europe is not the USA where nothing matters and the majority doesn’t count.

I am now against the current way the running order for the final is completed. Just as an example, Israel placed 3rd in it’s Semi and 4th in televoting but in the final placed 22nd in both the actual result and televoting! It is absolutely a result of its placing by the producers in the first spot that set it up to fail. A completely randomized draw is necessary for a fair contest. It is basic statistics, a randomized layout reduces bias, plain and simple. SHAME ON THE EBU!!

Absolutely randomized list would cause crap show – if 6-7 ballads would be put together, people would change the channels because of boredom. The way it is now is fair in my opinion. Israel got much better scores in Semifinal because his performance was better. In Final he was much much worse and 1/3 of a song under the tone.

Which also means televoters have not musical interests which for me makes this whole issue far more concerning … How can I trust a fair televoting score if the viewers at home are not willing to LISTEN to the songs … and just want some bs uptempo crap to keep them entertained and drunk? You do realize, that in the two years before that, Slovenia and Belgium who went first got results that fit with their semi final performance? Slovenia placed 4th or 5th, and received 14th. Belgium placed 3rd and received 10th place. They both went first in the final. While yes, it may of hurt them some, it certainly did not kill them. As for Imri, chalk it up to a terrible vocal performance and staging that Cyprus did better. In the semis, Imri didn’t have Cyprus to compare to and sounded much better in general. Azerbaijani jury gave 12 points to Belarus because the latter’s dictator illegally extradited blogger Alexandr Lapshin to Azerbaijan. The blogger critisicied Azerbaijani dictator Aliyev after visiting Artzakh. So, he was arrested in Minsk as per other dictator’ request and sent to Azerbaijan. I hate when a country is praised no matter what they send (Russia, Sweden, Australia,…). ‘Don’t come easy’ is my favourite Australian entry, Dami’s live last year was impressive, but didnt deserved that place.

By the way, I like the more countries possible participating, so I’m happy with Australia singing in Eurovision, as I would be happy with Kosovo, Lietchestein, Kazakhistan, etc.

F.Y.R.O.M juries ranked Greece 26th place and in their televoting it was rank 12. Demy wasn’t that bad to be in 26th place. As you can see all juries are influenced by politics. Best thing to do to make ESC better is to remove the juries. Some ppl are mentioning that Greece/Cyprus are exchanging votes and i have to say that does not always happen (both countries have same taste, check 2015 both countries gave 12 points to Italy) and many Cypriots live in Greece so i bet they vote for their song aswell.
