She’s the Macedonian beauty who was eliminated from the second semi-final of Eurovision 2017.

And while Jana Burceska is no doubt disappointed over the result, she has plenty of happy distractions in her life — including the fact she is five months pregnant and her recent engagement, which unfolded on live television during the Semi-Final 2 interval.

Speaking with wiwiblogger William just hours before the grand final in Kyiv, the “Dance Alone” singer dished on her marriage proposal and what it was like to be pregnant during the Eurovision promotional tour.

Jana Burceska — Interview after Second Semi-Final 2

Getting pregnant wasn’t planned and Jana realised she was with child after signing up for the Eurovision gig. Bowing out was not an option for her.

“Since I agreed on participating, of course I wanted to go all the way through,” she says.

Naturally singing for two presented some difficulties as she trekked through promo events in London, Amsterdam, Tel Aviv and beyond.

“I don’t know if you know, but pregnant women get very sleepy,” she says. “So I was like zzzz at rehearsal — falling asleep and would take a nap for an hour and then continue. But I was dedicated and I worked hard.”

All that practice helped things go smoothly in Kyiv.

”I was already in the good condition with the promo tours and all the interviews I did on those long days in London and Amsterdam especially…So I think I did pretty well.”

Did she ever let her secret slip?

“Sometimes while hanging out with the delegation I always wanted to make these pregnant women jokes, but I was like, ‘no one knows, so you better control yourself.'”

She had told her long-time partner that she’d love to marry him in the past. But his formal proposal on live television was a major shock.

”It was a surprise for me, but not for everyone else. The director of the show knew about it, the cameramen knew about it, the head of the Macedonian delegation and head of press knew about it, so there were like five people who knew, because everything needs to go through the EBU filter because you can’t just do whatever you want in the green room and apparently everything worked out perfectly well.”

“I almost lost if for a minute, like not the bad way, but I was sitting there — thank god I was seated — because if I was standing up I might have fainted…I couldn’t even hear what he was saying, I didn’t even see him. He was giving me the ring. People in the green room were like, ‘Take the ring. You need to take the ring’…even my finger nail fell off in all the excitement. But it’s fake, so…”

Jana Burceska — Eurovision 2017 red carpet

Jana and her beloved have been making music together for years.

”We’re actually playing in a band together for two and a half years and then recently we figured out we were made for each other.”

“I can’t say that I met the love of my life — I just recognised him in someone I knew.”

I was shook since the pregnancy was announced in her postcard, and then they were able to have the proposal live! It really brightened the week, and although I feel bad that she didn’t qualify for the Final, I’m glad she’s had so many positives that it outweighed the negatives. 🙂

Think of it as a novelty act 😉

I also don’t see why people feel the need to brag about or flaunt an out-of-wedlock pregnancy.

Because you know, people have sex before marriage in the 21st century.

@M_K, maybe it was staged, but Jana didn’t know about it so that made it very endearing. Her emotion was real. She really did not expect it because she had been asked to marry him before, but now there was the ring and it all got real — in front of millions. I found it very touching.

The BBC didn’t bother showing the proposal. I just thought i’d mention it.

SVT did. She should have announced her pregnancy BEFORE she flew to Kyiv. It might have improved her chances, for the people who vote in the semis have never said NO to a pregnant woman. Birgit was in real trouble in 2013, and Ira got a much bigger bump from the jury in 2016 than some of us expected.

Are you talking about the intro before her performance? From postcard to performance (less than a minute) definitely wasn’t long enough for the news to sink in. I don’t think all the jurors saw that postcard before her jury performance.

One question though: Will ALL Eurovision 2017 contestants (and maybe some other years) be invited to her wedding?

I don’t know about the other years, but its a possibility for the 2017 roster to be invited. What’s the biggest church in Skopje?

Gosh, the proposal was so obviously staged that I could hardly sit through that segment of the second semi final. It was so embarrassing.
