The dust has settled on Eurovision 2017 — but the analysis of the voting results is only just beginning. The juries — they who supposedly have the best sense of what makes a hit — rated down a number of songs that have gone on to chart globally on Spotify. Perhaps the best example comes from Belgium’s Blanche in Semi-Final 1.

On Thursday the “City Lights” singer saw her song charting on Spotify in 17 different countries. She was also #3 on the Spotify Global Viral chart.

Yet it seems that plenty of jurors in Semi-Final 1 struggled to smell a hit, as they penalised her more than any other artist in the semi-final when we compare televote and jury vote. There was a whopping 85 point difference between the two, with the public handing her 125 points to the jury’s 40.

Scroll down to see the full jury-televote split

In terms of ordinal rankings, the public ranked Blanche #3, while the jurors put her way down at #13. Yes, they did not want her to advance to the final, ranking her behind Australia, Czech Republic and Georgia — none of which the public placed in the Top 10.

Blanche was visibly nervous during the semi. It seems the juries viewed this as a weakness, while televoters (rightly) saw her vulnerability as fitting with the song’s sound and themes.

Interestingly, the same juries ranked her significantly higher in the final, owing to a stronger performance (but we’ll discuss that in a separate post soon).

In terms of points difference, Moldova was the nation the juries hurt the second most, giving it a score 69 points lower than the public. The jury also had large discrepancies with the public over Cyprus, which it marked 42 points lower.

In terms of rank ordinals, the jury hurt Belgium the most (-10 spots), followed by Poland and Montenegro (both -5), Cyprus (-4) and Moldova, Finland, Albania, and Latvia (all -2).

Semi-Final 1: Split results by points

SF1   Jury Televote Difference
Belgium 40 125 -85
Moldova 111 180 -69
Cyprus 61 103 -42
Portugal 173 197 -24
Montenegro 17 39 -22
Poland 50 69 -19
Latvia 1 20 -19
Finland 41 51 -10
Slovenia 16 20 -4
Iceland 29 31 -2
Albania 38 38 0
Greece 61 54 7
Sweden 124 103 21
Armenia 87 65 22
Azerbaijan 87 63 24
Georgia 62 37 25
Czech Republic 81 2 79
Australia 139 21 118

Semi-Final 1: Split results by ranking

SF1 Televote Jury Difference
Belgium 3 13 -10
Poland 6 11 -5
Montenegro 11 16 -5
Cyprus 5 9 -4
Moldova 2 4 -2
Finland 10 12 -2
Albania 12 14 -2
Latvia 16 18 -2
Greece 9 10 -1
Iceland 14 15 -1
Portugal 1 1 0
Slovenia 17 17 0
Sweden 4 3 1
Armenia 7 5 2
Azerbaijan 8 6 2
Georgia 13 8 5
Czech Republic 18 7 11
Australia 15 2 13

In terms of who the jury helped the most, Australia’s Isaiah takes the cake.

The jury awarded him 139 points, which was a whopping 118 more points than the public (21 points). This is the largest discrepancy (positive or negative) in the semi-final.

The same holds true for rank ordinals, with the jury ranking him second — 13 places higher than the public, who put him way down in 15th.

The public may have been more affected by Australia’s early draw in the running order than the jurors, who seem to respect quality songs regardless of their placing.

However, given how large the discrepancy is, it’s hard not to think that Australia benefitted from the Australia factor, which sees jurors in awe of the finely polished, expensive production (which some televoters may find sterile).

The jurors also gave a huge leg up to Czech Republic’s Martina Barta.

While the public only handed her two points, the juries gave her 81, making for a 79-point disparity.

In terms of ordinals, the juries would have put her through in seventh position. But the public really wasn’t feeling it. They ranked “My Turn” as their least favourite in 18th position.

I wonder if the jury ranking of Belgium was motivated by her vocals and performance or by the fact that this song is more edgy and modern.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. I had Australia in my personal Top 10 before the rehearsals. After Eurovision, it isn’t even in My Top 30. He has a great voice, but the song isn’t catchy and the staging was “poor and messy”. The televoting results show us exactly what I thought about that performance. In the end he sounded just like one of those “screaming-divas”, or even worse because his voice cracked. Maybe I’m being a bit harsh on this one, but 4th with the juries and 9th overall is disrespectful with other countries (and there are 42!), because… Read more »

The jury show is separate and is performed before the live shows. If both the televoters and juries (view and vote) during the same show then that “Is definitely questionable ” as Isaiah clearly stuffed up part of his performance. His jury performance was obviously alot better. I still think that Isaiah has a great voice and is very humble. I’m a huge fan now.

I think they just saved Isaiah for two reasons 1 they knew that he will struggle with the televote and 2 they wanted to give a good place to Australia so that the country will continue to participate. Alas Finland was a collateral damage. Last year Dami Im had a strong ballad but his qualification is really questionable. I think it’s a bad thing to do that it doesn’t help Australia at all it will just reinforce resentment of the country.

Which is why they need to scrap the idea of having 2 performances, and make the jurors watch the same performance as the public. ONE performance for ALL to see and vote on.

It is certainly not catchy. One of the most forgettable tunes this year. I already forgot it and ESC songs don’t slip on me easy.

And the selfie-shots staging did nothing for me neither.

So, I don’t buy that theory and ESC would become horrible if every country sent a song like Australia does. Ouf of their 3 entries so far, none of them was among my favourites. It is insincere pop without a meaning and as such it fails to be infectuous and entertaining.

We know why Australia got those jury points. Because they always do!
Otherwise I think the juries did their job here. They penalised a great song that was not performed particularly well (Belgium) and helped songs with less mainstream appeal that were performed very well (Czech Rep and Georgia).
Semi Final 2 was more strange. I mean, Estonia second bottom with juries? Below Lithuania? What did Koit do during the jury performance to deserve that?

Stan

I think they got punished because: – dated and bland song – poor vocals (take note of Koit’s falsetto which is very prominent and very weak) – staging was a mess. The way that Koit stares into the camera when they do the ‘We are lost’ bridge is ridiculous. Problem is also that there was no irony or humour in it. Slavko was just having fun, going all the way. Same for Jacques, btw. I will never watch it again 🙂 I’m from Belgium, so very happy that the televote saved Blanche. But I actually rooted for Martina Barta. That… Read more »

Blanche is the only contestant this year who is not stage ready. As an artist you must be prepared to perform under unexpected or awkward conditions. You’ll be invited to events and gigs and tv shows. You would have to sing accapella or be asked to sing on the spot. At the eurovision parties she didn’t sing any covers like all the other artists did, she just performed her song which was sung very poorly. The only performance that was good was the final show but was still far from perfect. Take away the effects and backing vocalist and her… Read more »

Hit-potential isn’t the only or most important criterion, juries have to consider. The SF jury vote* for Belgium is more than o.k. The song was nicely calm and less antiquated than most competitors. Hence it clearly stood out and got many televotes. But let’s be honest, it isn’t the great musical masterpiece or revelation, that some seem to suggest. Most importantly, Blanche couldn’t deliver an adequate performance. She had obvious difficulties singing and expressing the emotions of her song (which is NOT the same as exposing her stage fright!). Others sang their (much harder) songs without problems or at least… Read more »

Blanche looked nervous/disinterested throughout out the whole process – even in the official video!
Personally, I didn’t like her voice. It had a rather affected slur in it which, quite frankly, made her sound like she had some sort of physical affliction.
I was unmoved by the song. The only virtue it seems to have is that it’s “modern”. But that only means that it will be hopelessly old fashioned in a short amount of time.

This was the year to celebrate diversity and the singers were serving medical realness with their songs. If they didnt have equipment props like the russian delegation attempted, then they tried to improvise, like Robin with his frozen facial expression, Slavko and Jana Burceska with violent seizures during dancing and the romanian rapper with low IQ.

Blanche did her best with her timed arm movements to copy Portugal’s dancing and her lack of vocal control also helped to make her look incapacitated.

The biggest injustice is Australia being in Eurovision in the first place, stealing a spot in the final that could be of an European/Mediterranean country. Get Australia out of Eurovision and make it return when the country’s anywhere near the Mediterranean. With continental drifting I predict 30 million years. Than we could do a neo-Pangeavision.

I can completely understand where the juries were coming from with regard to Blanche. Her song may have been catchy, but she simply could not sing it – even in the final her supposed ‘high’ register (despite the fact it’s not that high!) was all over the place. Whether it was nerves or not, frankly I don’t care, it was almost as painful as Nina Kraljic’s performance last year. I’m yet to do detailed jury analysis, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if it were in fact the vocal coaches and other ‘singing professionals’ who voted her down, as… Read more »

It’s obvious she can’t sing live. She failed miserably at the promotion tours. Even her performance on the voice Belgique was removed because of the bad feedback. People love the song so much that they can’t accept the fact that her vocals and charisma are at the same level as a karaoke singer. She is a very lovely and sweet girl but the music industry isn’t for her. The televoters loved the song but the juries ranked her fairly. If it was based on song alone it would of been one of the best.

(Sorry for two comments…) The other thing to consider is the difference in sound. Listening to a singer live in an arena, you should naturally hear a broader quality of sound than you would hearing the sound processed through to a TV (even in HD). This also might explain some of the differences for Belgium and Australia – obviously Isaiah’s voice is stunning live because his high tenor range resonates better. However, when I heard Blanche in London (for example), her range did not resonate and was one of the weakest on the night. But, Blanche’s vocal does sound stronger… Read more »

Hmmm. The problem for everyone else (not Wiwibloggs) is that we don’t get to see the Jury final. So we can’t accurately comment on the differences between the two sets of performances – we have to rely on William and other members of the press core for that. For example, Australia’s Isaiah might have sung really well in Jury Semi Final 1, but then sang terribly in the Audience SF1. Hence the discrepancy. I know it makes for a good set of live shows, but personally I don’t understand why the “jury” performances are on different days to the “audience”… Read more »

Although I don’t know myself, I can think of some reasons: – To give jurors more time to think through their decisions, without being stressed out. Perhaps they’re allowed to re-watch and re-listen to the performances? – To speed up the process in the grand final. Televotes can be collected while the juries give their points. This explanation is only relevant in the new voting system. – To give EBU time to check for anomalies and bizarre votes. This seems like a logical thing to do, but I must admit if this is the case they don’t seem to be… Read more »

In semi 1 Also interesting how the televote was stronger for Portugal than with the juries. In fact, there were 5 countries in semi 1 that placed Salvador #1 with televote but not with juries. Everyone assumed the song would do better with juries.

By the final many juries got on board and the song did better with juries than televote. But still got at least 5 points from every televote in every country and only failed with Montenegro and Bulgaria jury.

It was due to Televote’s Top 10 slayed so big this time.

From 11th below (like Australia), countries only got points from diaspora/friends/neighbors.
It was hard to get points.

Top 8 from televote got points from almost all countries. Also Croatia and France were strong.
It was a big consensus.

Most of the female vocalists were better than Blanche both vocally and stage presence.
Blanche’s massive televotes are due to the song and studio version. The song was and still is a hit. But honestly her vocals are no way near as good as Lucie, Alma, Anja, Lindita, Kasia and Tamara just to name a few. Blanche was the only singer that didn’t perform any covers at the promos because she had difficulty singing her own song let alone attempt other songs.

I agree that for most viewers that shouty female ballads are a bit expected and often lack feeling and are just about showing off what you can do with your voice. There was a lot of that this year and most viewers were turned off by it.

Even Christina Aguilera who is the queen of this hasn’t had much luck recently. Her biggest non-dance hits are her softer songs or more emotional songs.

Some people here these loud ballads and say “look at that voice” but most viewers said “why is she shouting”.

Globally, on Spotify, Isaiah is one of, if not the most successful singer to compete at this year’s Eurovision. Isaiah’s first song, It’s Gotta Be You has had over 70 million plus streams on Spotify and has gone double platinum in Sweden.

Funny how Isaiah didn’t do well with televotes for his eurovision song but his other song “It’s Gotta Be You”, has just as of yesterday been certified “Double Platinum in Sweden”. His eurovision journey helped him reach 90k+ instagram followers. For someone that got low televotes that’s pretty impressive. He probaby came to eurovision with the wrong song, staging and that unfortunate bum note. I wouldn’t underestimate this guy.

I just posted a similar response, I didn’t see your post.:) He’ll make a ton of money, he’s mature, intelligent, poised, articulate, good looking and comes across as really sweet. I frankly have surprised at the dislike for him here.

Where did you find out? I preferred his song “It’s gotta be you”. That should of been his eurovision song.
By the way he’s still in Europe at the moment. He went to France and is now in Sweden and is heading to other countries. Heard he was doing a promo tour. He hasn’t gone home to Australia yet.

I thought Isaiah sounded dreadful in the jury performance. Placing him 2nd and Blanche 13th was a joke. Then again, the juries didn’t like any of the women this year-other than OG3NE, so…

Women were bad and boring this year.
Only Blanche and Alma were fantastic and televote saw that of course.

O’G3NE weren’t the only act saved.

Anja? 5 points in Semi from televote. Juries push her hard.
Lucie? 99 points from juries, 12 televote.

Isaiah’s jury show performance was impressive and there were no hiccups. The mistake in the live show was evident in the televotes as people were reluctant to vote for him after that.
He’s got a great voice and I’ve been listening to his x factor album daily.

That explains why you think it was good, he deafened you girl. The public voted for him even less in the final.

Agree with Fàtima. Judges and televoters are viewing different performances. In The live semifinal Isaiah didn’t hit the high note so for me explains the bad response of the public.

That wasn’t a factor.
2 points in final is very telling.
People were bored, simple.

Alex fron romania didn’t hit any note in the final and Romania got 224 points.

Juries are not here to agree with the public, so that per se is not a scandalizable.

Actually seem to vote quite fairly on a big picture, and have bettered themselves throughout the years, but apparently they are still corrupted by two countries: Sweden, which runs the show; Australia, to keep them interested in the show.

“Scandals” on a much more smaller scale are the jury love between Greece and Cyprus, the jury hate between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the attempts to kill their enemies between Bulgaria, Portugal and Italy. But these things don’t matter much.

Juries are getting worse since 2013. Their voting is just biased and looks random.

I would add Malta in your list.
And Norway got another Top 10 thanks to juries.

Last year Sweden got more televotes than jury votes. This also happend with Eric Saade.

Austrailia overrated yet again…there is a surprise!

The juries completely lost it with Belgium, should have at least given her a spot in the Top 10. I’m so glad that televoters knew what music was. Australia shouldn’t have qualified. The song was bad and the performance was bad. But alas, this is Australia -_-

Are you saying that Dami Im was overrated last year?

Darren

Yes, I was. She was the first female oralist to come to the stage with a white dress and a mid-tempo ballad. Top 10-15 maybe but 2nd place? No chance.
Would any other country have done as well if they sent SOS?

Dami was so overrated by juries.
320 points were insane. Compared to 191 from televote.

Juries are clearly biased.

I don’t like Sound of Silence, I wanna mean, it’s not really my cup of tea. I think the same about Sergey Lazarev. I’m so happy because Jamala wons it, (and not, It’s not because political message).

I prefer only televote than both, it’s more democratic and less “eurodrama”

It totally was. Her vocals are impeccable but the song is far from being the most original, the catchiest, the most heartfelt, the most meaningful or the most fun. The rest of the top-5 succeeds better in at least one of these, while ‘Sound of Silence’ is more of a vocal showcase. I think the song is fine, but the way juries unanimously put it so high was surprising, especially the way it was ahead with such huge gap, not even having received the most 12 points. Ausralia got points from all national juries but 3, at the same time,… Read more »

Australia looked like a non-qualifier in the final, finishing in the top 10.
Sorry, but I’m struggling to understand this year’s jury results. I guess next year the show will end just before the voting.

Let’s not forget that the juries and the televoters judged two different performances. I remember hearing Isaiah sing cleanly in the jury final (via a live stream), whereas, in the broadcast final, there was a bad note as the song reached its climax. I think it’s time that everyone votes on the same performance, or we are always going to have discrepancies such as these. They do the contest no good because the results show rewards and penalties which only those few watching the jury final will understand.

A bad note? There wasn’t a note in tune in the live performance. And it’s not like he was flawless the night before, either. Those useless juries are voting for the countries first and foremost.

I like ‘My Turn’ too. My conclusion is that it was just too old fashioned for people. Clearly, it’s me who’s out of date. 🙁

The issue was that Martina Wasn’t semi-convulsing on the stage and didn’t have a back story of a lethal medical condition!!

It literally sounds like a song at the bottom of a Martine McCutcheon album tracklist… how some people expected it to attract the public is beyond me.

Polegend Godgarina is a troll. He/she is a virus on wiwibloggs. I’ve been reading their comments and I only agreed with them 10% of the time. Last year there was this guy called “Nicky91” who was a stubborn Ira losco fan, this year it’s Polegend.
