The Netherlands has not officially announced it’s participation in next year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Portugal, but the rumour mill has already started spinning — and it’s spinning fast! In recent days fans have been whispering about pop RnB artist Alain Clark. And now they have another name on their lips: Romy Monteiro.

Speaking to Daniël Dekker, one of the key figures in AVROTROS’ annual selection procedure, Dutch media Shownieuws put forward the idea of sending Romy and he said he would consider her. And we have to say: she is definitely worth considering.

The 24-year-old came to public attention in 2014 when she competed on The Voice of Holland, where she made it through to the quarterfinals. It wasn’t apparent at the time, but that season of the show spawned at least two Eurovision connections. Her coach was Eurovision 2015 star Trijntje Oosterhuis and the winners of that season were OG3NE, who went on to represent the Netherlands this year.

She may not have won the title, but Romy did win the leading role in the Dutch version of the musical The Bodyguard, where she slays some of Whitney Houston’s biggest hits daily.

The musical also shows off another one of Romy’s talents: dancing. In 2016 she took part in the television show Dance, dance, dance, where she competed in a group along with mother Antje Monteiro, also a musical star.

Her voice combined with her ability to move would give The Netherlands the chance to send a dance track — the first in a very long time. But trust us: Romy will stand out even if she stands in place and belts out a ballad!

Romy also has loose connections to Portugal, where Eurovision 2018 will take place. Her estranged father, who left the family while she was still young, is Angolan-Portuguese.

The timing could work out very well. Next month, after almost two years of performing in the musical, Romy will bid farewell to her role in The Bodyguard.

Are you liking the idea of Romy at Eurovision? Do you think her voice could wow viewers? And what genre do you want to see her perform in? Let us know in the comments box below.

Please Avrotros, Daniel Dekker, Cornald Maas, Jan Smit, focus on the song and not so much on the artist. If you choose a good song there is always a Dutch artist who will sing!

I don’t think good song writing works that way. A song should be made by or for a specific singer/ band. Otherwise you’ll get generic crap like “wildfire” in the german nf. And only second rate artists would want to sing the song.

I wish you hadn’t uploaded the obvious Whitney song (which itself was a Dolly Parton remake) as a benchmark for us to decide, because the most obvious question that will follow is, “What else can she sing?” You follow me? Too much of a cliché to judge her based on “I Will Always Love You”. Having said that, after having seen Softengine from FIN lose another member (thus putting another shot at the ESC in doubt), and this year’s ESC having only one rock band (O.Torvald from UKR), I’m still in the camp for Kensington. If not them, maybe Chef’Special… Read more »

I would totally be here for it. The looks, the voice… Europe is going to be slain.

I see in a lot of comments the preference for a dance song as the Dutch entry. This would be the worst possible idea in my opinion.
It’s so hard to create a ESC winning dance song. 99% of the time, it just doesn’t stand out enough and doesn’t showcase the singer’s voice.

Shady Lady by Ani Lorak says hi. It’s not impossible to achieve that.

Ummm…. Euphoria and Heroes? Also what about dance songs that ended up in the top 10? Like City Lights, Hey Mamma, Grab The Moment, I Feed You My Love, Dancing Lasha Tumbai, Shady Lady, Jai Cherche, If I Were Sorry, You’re The Only One, Rhythm Inside, What’s the Pressure, Golden Boy, etc?

You need a stage performance and a stage SETTING that fit the song you enter. Jana Burceska’s “Dance Alone” (Macedonia) failed, because with a song like that, you needed to turn the stage into a mini-rave (lasers, spinning or blinking spotlights, etc.). Same for Ryan Dolan’s “Only Love Survives” (Ireland 2013). Instead, they took the generic ESC approach and flopped. Look at what JOWST (Norway) brought to the stage, graphics and all, the result being an unexpected top-10 finish.

LOVE her incredible voice and looks. In my opinion she’s one of the prettiest and most talented celebrities from our country.
The only question is: what will she sing? She hasn’t released any of her own material… Please no generic dance song

Netherlands has many big stars and they can choose really original songs and outstanding artists. Next solo female from talent show? Why why why? Eurovision is full of them and Europe sent only one of them in final TOP10 this year. Nobody cares about them more, its still the same. Europe wants originality, bigger genres diversity, interesting projects, featurings, something NEW! What about great nu-metal group from NL? I think this is the last place with the obsession of solo female pop, because everyone other wants different things like 50’s portuguese nostalgia this year. I expect great artist and song… Read more »

I dunno why she is hated there, but she’s pretty boring as a performer.

I hope Avrotros will be more focused on the song this time.
Picking just an artist with no song and concept is so risky, specially if they are lacking charisma and uniqueness.

I’m already bored by her.

As someone said, Netherlands needs to bring something new to the table, like in 2014.
Sending just a voice is not gonna work.

No sorry, she sings great but wont bring anything new to the table. And we do have that in the Netherlands. The act has to stand out, like Jet Rebel.

Really good singer. I think she should get a song where she can really get those high notes out as well as having a song that does appeal to a lot of people (radio friendly). Really getting a Beyonce vibe out of this.
