laura tesoro higher 2017 belgium eurovision 2016

She’s the Belgian singer who charmed her way into the top ten at Eurovision 2016. But it’s only now that Laura Tesoro has gotten round to releasing some new music. The curly-haired popstar finally dropped “Higher” — the much anticipated follow-up to “What’s The Pressure” — in April, while the music video came out at the end of May.

Speaking to local media, Laura explains why it took so long for the single to arrive. Essentially, she wanted to make sure it was good – plus she’s been rather busy hosting Belgium’s Got Talent, judging on The Voice Kids Flanders and interviewing Justin Timberlake. Was it worth the wait?

Short answer: Yes! Whereas her Eurosong winning effort took us back to the disco and soul sounds of the 1970s, “Higher” is firmly planted in the now. This time she’s channelling the infectious pop of Carly Rae Jepsen with the swagger of Poland’s Margaret.

Set to some mild tropical beats, Laura sings of how her love raises her up “You take me higher, everytime we’re on fire”. She doesn’t even care when they fight “Baby just screw it, I like the way we do it”.

And despite the new direction, none of Laura’s infectiously bubbly persona is lost. In fact, the genre change allows her to shine all the brighter.

This just might be the song of the summer — at least in the world of Eurovision.

The feelgood music video offers little in the way of narrative. For the most part, Laura sits on a stool before a backdrop that changes from blue to gold to pink. By contrast, the effervescent songstress dons a variety of black outfits, which against the bright colours make sure she is always the focus.

Wearing a constant smile and a selection of hairstyles — including a high ponytail a la Ariana Grande — Laura gives us plenty of attitude as lyrics such as higher, fire and inspire flash up on screen.

As the music draws to a close, Laura fades into the shadows and is replaced with an unidentified male — presumably he’s the lucky guy who gets to take her higher!

As forgettable as Yaremchuk’s one. Got me scrolling downwards to Debrah Scarlett then Ognevich and… Rykka’s oldie. More worthy vibes in player there.

I hear no Carlegend Raenaissance Jepsus in this. The savior of pop music has nothing to do with this. Higher is pretty basic tbh, didn’t stick in my mind at all.
