Daniël Dekker, one of the key figures in AVROTROS’ annual Eurovision selection procedure, recently told Dutch media that he would consider her for Eurovision 2018.

And today singer Romy Monteiro made it clear that she’d love to take up the offer to sing for The Netherlands in Portugal should it arise.

Speaking to Dutch radio station 100% NL, the 24-year-old star said: “I think it’s a great honour and I would definitely say yes. I would start rehearsing and focusing right away, even though it is still a year from now.”

Romy has been a steady presence in our Facebook feed in recent days.

Following our earlier report that she may be considered for Eurovision, AVROTROS announced that the singing sensation will host Junior Songfestival — the country’s Junior Eurovision Song Contest selection.

Romy, who is currently wrapping up her role in the musical The Bodyguard, will host the two semi-finals and final, which takes place on September 16.

“In recent years, the festival has proved a real springboard for young singing talents,” Romy said of the announcement. “And the boys and girls we see this year in the semifinals are also each such promising talents.”

Romy came to public attention in 2014 when she competed on The Voice of Holland, where she made it through to the quarterfinals. It wasn’t apparent at the time, but that season of the show spawned at least two Eurovision connections. Her coach was Eurovision 2015 star Trijntje Oosterhuis and the winners of that season were OG3NE, who went on to represent the Netherlands this year.

She may not have won the title, but Romy did win the leading role in the Dutch version of the musical The Bodyguard, where she slays some of Whitney Houston’s biggest hits daily.

The musical also shows off another one of Romy’s talents: dancing. In 2016 she took part in the television show Dance, dance, dance, where she competed in a group along with mother Antje Monteiro, also a musical star.

Her voice combined with her ability to move would give The Netherlands the chance to send a dance track — the first in a very long time. But trust us: Romy will stand out even if she stands in place and belts out a ballad!

Romy also has loose connections to Portugal, where Eurovision 2018 will take place. Her estranged father, who left the family while she was still young, is Angolan-Portuguese.

The timing could work out very well. Next month, after almost two years of performing in the musical, Romy will bid farewell to her role in The Bodyguard.

Are you liking the idea of Romy at Eurovision? Do you think her Junior Songfestival gig is a sign AVROTROS wants her for the adult ESC as well?

I have no problem if AVROTOS selected her for Eurovision (although I’m saying Maan should represent Netherlands). But if she were to go to Eurovision, then they better came up with something similar to “Solo Dance” or “By Your Side” if they want to land in the Top 15 or Top 5.

Maan has a song with Hardwell and it’s pretty flat and average.
And she is not charismatic singing this kind of records :S
I don’t see her singing something like “Solo Dance”.

I’m actually referring to Romy Monteiro. I’m saying that if AVROTOS picked Romy, then they better make a song similar to “Solo Dance” or “By Your Side”.

If we are talking about the Danish song.. it’s like the opposite to Romy. She would go with a boring ballad to showcase her voice. (And flop hard)
But Avrotos could send a House banger like those 2 for sure 🙂

YES please!! but not with a boring ballad! Give her an amazing dance track!! Eurovision needs more fast food music!!!!!!!!!

How about Natalie La Rose? She had two hits in 2015 (including a top ten in America) and then she disappeared. Around the World would’ve been a Eurovision smash, they should consider her too.

What about new single It’s complicated from Maraaya (Slovenia 2015) and BQL (second at EMA 2017)? It’s a great song and it will be a great hit. Btw Maraaya is now VEVO!!!

I hope Netherlands is not sending a random singer with a generic song.
Eurovision is not The Voice.

Netherlands seems to have interest in this contest. They can come up with something really strong if they want to.
And sending artists like O’G3NE, Romy, Maan is not going to work at all.

Did you just say OG3NE didn’t work?! They came 11th!

Methinks Marc expected better, because Douwe Bob finished 11th as well, but 3 points higher (153 to O’G3NE’s 150). At least they’re back to qualifying, thanks to the benchmark Anouk put out there in 2013.

O’g3ne didn’t work for televote. 9th in their semi and 15 points in the final (10 from Belgium).

Avrotos should be wiser and make a better move next year.

But it worked for the jury. It will be difficult anyway to please both at the same time

It depends on how you define ‘work’. Being 11th out of 42 candidates is excellent!

If Netherlands wants to win.. (not 11th) believe me that picking O’g3ne, Trinjte, Romy etc.. is not the way.

To me “work” means Top 10 in televote at least, and over 100 points there.

You can please both (The Common Linnets did it.. and in any other year they would have won, at least the televote for sure)
Anyway, I don’t care about juries and their bias voting.

That’s why I want to see the Dutch try a rock song next time.

As A Dutch I love every option 😀 There are a lot of good singers and songwriters in our country and if we come on stage with a good song and singer, for me everything is perfect.
Romy is very charismatic and a good live performer, but don’t rush it: there are more options.

Yes. Sharon Doorson could also do it.
With so many names interested in representing the N’lands, I guess their selection will be very strong for 2018.

I’m in love with 2014 (I’m sorry, it deserved the 1st place) and 2016 entries from The Netherlands!

Definitely. Calm After the Storm is my favourite Eurovision song ever.
I still remember Graham Norton saying that it wasn’t appropriate for the contest, maybe because he desperately wanted Conchita to win.

Maybe it’s also my fav too!
So sad! Portugal’s (2017) entry says “Hi!” to him! Also many people in Portugal said that Amar Pelos Dois is not for Eurovision, and it’ll be on last place bla bla bla and no final again, well SURPRISE!
The juries put Sweden above The Netherlands in 2014, I hate that song well I have to respect their votes (but I’m frustrated inside).

Undo received only 1 point ahead of Calm After the Storm. I liked Sweden’s song in 2014, but not as much as the Dutch entry.
I think Sweden was deeply overrated by the juries in 2013, 2015 and 2017.

For the other hand Juries that year helped Norway, it was so underrated by televote. That song reminds me Finland this year, so painful not see Finland in final </3

I really like his performance so simple and good, when he performed I really could apreciate how beautiful is his song! My favourite to win was Ukraine, and it happened!
