He’s the Polish star, known for his flowing long hair and instantly recognisable voice, which melds an angelic quality with sensual grit.
And on Wednesday Michal Szpak put all those attributes on fine display with the release of the music video for “Tic Tac Clock”.
The video sees Michal — shirt frequently undone — singing on the beach and in a boat, slaying scene-to-scene with all the beautiful ladies in his life. But turn up the volume and you’ll quickly realise that not all is well, as Michal seeks to fill the “empty space” in his heart in this slightly melancholic song about leaving a troubled relationship behind.

“I want to run away from you,” he says, as backing vocalists mimic the clock with the repetition of tic tac, tic tac, tic tac. “Clock on my wall tells me that it’s the truth, I want to run away from this love.”
As with his Eurovision 2016 entry “Color of Your Life”, Michal’s new single is fuelled by nostalgia and more than a bit of wistfulness. But here pain provides the drive as he struggles to separate from his beloved (who, as we see in the video, loves to share laughs and long baths with the androgynous star).
He takes a vintage sound — essentially an 80s synthpop ballad — and updates it for 2017 with clever production that’s cleverly restrained.

Since Eurovision 2016, where he placed an impressive third in the televote, despite the juries ranking him next-to-last, Michal has seen his star rise in his Motherland.
Google’s end-of-year search rankings saw him named Poland’s most searched-for musical star, and he was also the third-most searched for musical performer (of any nationality) in Poland. He was ninth on Google Poland’s list of fastest-rising searches.
