He’s the Hungarian charmer who brought the Romani language to Eurovision last May in Kyiv.

Now, Joci Pápai is injecting some romance into our summer with the dramatic “Özönvíz” (Flood).

“Özönvís” tells the story of a man’s emotions for his beloved. Or rather flood of emotions, hence the title. It’s the A Dal winner’s first single since “Origo”.

Just like his Eurovision 2017 entry — which secured Hungary its second best result since 2007 — Joci’s new release is a powerful ode to love, where modern pop is mixed together with the traditional sound of his Romani heritage.

With lyrics written by Joci himself, in collaboration with Ferenc Molnár “Caramel” and Gergo Szakács, the track is deeply personal.

According to the main man, the release is very important to him, as he had been struggling musicly prior to his Eurovision adventure. But, thanks to both fate and his faith, the words came to him in the end. Pápai credits the almighty for giving him the strength to keep his creativity alive.

In the music video, Joci is joined by dancer Alexandra Virág — she who danced so passionately throughout his Eurovision performance. And, as in Kyiv, it’s her job to represent the singing rapper’s lover.

And it would seem that she was fully clued in to all the entries inside the International Exhibition Centre — or at least Montenegro’s. For the dancing damsel does Slavko Kalezic proud as she whips her single braid back and forth.

Although the video only landed on Monday, Joci first debuted the song live on Hungarian TV channel Duna back in June. Alexandra accompanied him then too. Hopefully their partnership will continue to flourish into the future, since they seem to be a match made in musical heaven.

Joci Pápai — Özönvíz lyrics

Nem látom az arcod, a víztükörben magam állok.
Hosszú volt ez a tél, feledhetném, feledhetném.
Nem hallom a hangod, a csend borítja be a tájat,
Bármerre visz a szél, engedném, elengedném.

Valami most is fáj
Lépteidet hallom még.
Ha elmész, nem marad ami szép,
Bárhova is indulnék,
Jajj jaja jajj.

Hallom, ahogy hozzám szól,
Ébredek a zuhanásból.
Visszajövök, nem lesz baj,
Jajj jaja jajj.

Vártál a folyónál, a hajadból egy hidat fontál.
Hívtál, hogy menjek át, a viharban, a viharban.
Szívemben dobogtál, és nem hallottam a világot.
Más partra sodortál, és messze jársz messze járok.

Valami most is fáj
Lépteidet hallom még.
Ha elmész, nem marad ami szép,
Bárhova is indulnék,
Jajj jaja jajj.

Hallom, ahogy hozzám szól,
Ébredek a zuhanásból.
Visszajövök, nem lesz baj.

Viharban jöttem, az árral szemben,, úgy is csak szöktem, özönvíz lettem.

Valami most is fáj
Lépteidet hallom még.
Ha elmész, nem marad ami szép,
Bárhova is indulnék,
Jajj jaja jajj.

Hallom, ahogy hozzám szól,
Ébredek a zuhanásból.
Visszajövök, nem lesz baj,
Jajj jaja jajj.

Valami most is fáj.
Valami most is fáj.

Alexandra has a braid like Slavko, Poli Genova has a new video with horse heads like DiHaj, Michal Szpak is using in concerts a background with himself having wings like Sergey Lazarev, esc stars are finding inspiration in each other.

Brief translation of the song: I cannot see your face, I’m standing in the water table all alone. This winter was long, wish I could forget, I could forget. I cannot hear your voice, silence covers the landscape, Wherever the wind goes, I would let her go, let her go. Something still hurts, I can still hear your steps. If you leave, all the beauty will be gone, wherever I would go. Jajj jaja jajj I can hear she is speaking to me, I wake from the hurtle, I will come back, there won’t be any problem Jajj jaja jajj.… Read more »

Nice song. He has great talent. Wish I understood the lyrics. Wish he could also do an English version. But yes, very good.

Maybe it’s not perfectly refined (just about kinda forced rhythmicity in first half) but I’m still delighted that it wasn’t one time wonder with ‘Origo’ and the work continues. Pity though that not only he may face obstruction at home from some powers but got same thing at the contest albeit didn’t succeeded potentials of staging.

Had had previous hits in Hungary previous Origo. He has never been a One Hit Wonder 🙂

You do notice that my ‘it’ can’t transform into your ‘He’? It was about traditional stuff and implementation of it in His current tracks.

Why do we have the jury if this song was placed #17 with only 48 points.
Where are the music professionals? I only saw unprofessionals overrating cheesy entries, called “radiofriendly” (Sweden, Australia, Norway, Austria, Denmark).
Must be justified, since they were all big hits across Europe.

Indeed!
Origo had:
– Writing/originality
– Great vocals
– Arresting performance
– Amazing overall impression (as we saw in its televote result.
All 4 are the juries’ criteria, yet it only came 17th. Juries keep proving they are just useless.

Juries basically reward generic/safe songs. It’s a miracle that Portugal won there.

Not Wiktoria not Blanche, not O3GNE… Joci is the real winner of ESC 2017!

I was being ironical… As it seems so fashionable in every post to say that “x” or “y” is the real winner.

This ‘jalomá jajj jaja jajj’ is still not my thing, but I like this one more than Origo 🙂
