He’s the synth-pop artist who took Belgium to fourth place at Eurovision 2015 before winning Danse avec les stars in France.

And on Friday Loïc Nottet put his artistry across song and dance on show yet again with the release of his latest single and music video “Mud Blood”.

In the four-minutes of 80s electro pop the Belgian star sings about the demons inside of all of us. He scoffs at conformity — “We’re gonna lose, Mama, because we choose, Mama, to say that we’re the best, but we look just like the rest”. And he takes a dig at those who pursue superficial glories — “We want that crown, Mama, and we want it now, Mama, to be the selfish kings of a worthless empire.” Preach.

The video brings the drama of battling with one’s self to life with Loïc portraying good and evil in a Sia-esque inspired dance off. It’s set among shadows and light and bares the cinematic quality Loïc’s videos are known for.

“I wanted to explain the song through a fight between my two selves: the good and the evil,” he told Fader.

“The evil wants the good to get dirty in order to escape his problems. Eventually the good prevails, meaning that you have to face your problems, not run away from them. Even though problems are hard to deal with, the most important thing is to never give up.”

“Mud Blood” features on Loïc’s debut album “Selfocracy”, which dropped in the spring.

It includes twelve tracks that are collectively contemplative and brooding. The title track introduces the album with a stirring monologue set over dark sounds. “Mud Blood” is arguably the best track on the record.

Another standout is the lead single “Million Eyes”, which was crowned Team Wiwi’s Top Track of 2016. It carries the theme of the album superbly, as Loïc sings about the glare of the public eye. With lyrics as powerful as “different, too different, I’m scared of judgement”, it’s easy to see why this was our favourite track of the year.

Mud Blood lyrics — Loïc Nottet

We got demons
Demons stuck inside our blood
Yeah we’ve got drugs inside our heart
Yeah we eat the mud to be freeWe got demons
Demons stuck inside our blood
Yeah we’ve got drugs inside our heart
Yeah we eat the mud to be freeWe’re gonna lose, Mama
Because we choose, Mama
To say that we’re the best
But we look just like the rest, Mama
We want that crown, Mama
And we want it now, Mama
To be the selfish kings
Of a worthless empireThat’s why we’re insane
We take mud to escape
Cause life’s hard to takeSo in our veins, it runs mud blood
We take all kinds of drugs
It’s our way to pretend
That we enjoy the life we’ve got
Sometimes it hurts to pray
To god and other saints
We’ve got mud blood

We got demons
Demons stuck inside our blood
Yeah we’ve got drugs inside our heart
Yeah we eat the mud to be free

It’s all about, Mama
What we look like, Mama
We talk about ourselves
Even if we sound obsessed, Mama
Always expressed, Mama
We couldn’t care less, Mama
We want to take you out
Like in a game of chess

That’s why we’re insane
We take mud to escape
Cause life’s hard to take

So in our veins, it runs mud blood
We take all kinds of drugs
It’s our way to pretend
That we enjoy the life we’ve got
Sometimes it hurts to pray
To god and other saints
We’ve got mud blood

We’re mud eaters, we’re mud eaters
We’re mud eaters we have mud blood
We take all kinds of drugs
We’re mud eaters, we’re mud eaters
We’re mud eaters we have mud blood
We take all kinds of drugs

That’s why we’re insane
We take mud to escape
Cause life’s hard to take

So in our veins, it runs mud blood
We take all kinds of drugs
It’s our way to pretend
That we enjoy the life we’ve got
Sometimes it hurts to pray
To god and other saints

So in our veins, it runs mud blood
We take all kinds of drugs
It’s our way to pretend
That we enjoy the life we’ve got
Sometimes it hurts to pray
To god and other saints
We’ve got mud blood

Belgium always have good entries (apart from this year), when are they going to win it again? People always talk about Sweden, Belgium and Denmark get overlooked imho.

Wow!

Not a huge fan of the song, but the dancing and his vocals are incredible. Plus, he is so adorable.

Why this man isn’t international star already? His music videos are better than movies and his voice is pure gold. <3 Loïc Nottet <3
