She won the fifth series of Italy’s X Factor and watched her debut single go double platinum.

And on Friday Eurovision 2016 star Francesca Michielin opened a new chapter in her musical life with the release of her stirring new single “Vulcano”.

Hot like lava and sultry like a Milanese woman of the night, the three-minute track plays in the space between urban pop and tropical house, throbbing and pulsating with a heady mix of drum, piano, horns and more. As in any eruption things get loud, but Francesca retains her signature control. Amid all the heat there’s a strong sense of cool, creating what may be her finest single yet.

Ahead of the release she met with Italian journalists in an Indian restaurant in Milan, noting that she penned the song in a similar space. She even references the establishment in the lyrics, which detail the passions that come with memories of a certain Mister: “I run at night, the lanterns, the stars, there is the Indian bar and the smell of you.”

Volcanos release pressure in their fury — and are an apt description of where Francesca is at as an artist.

“Volcano is an emblematic title that already makes sense in that there is something explosive in me and in my new way of making music,” she told ANSA.

“A volcano is something immediate, dirty and visceral, which at one point explodes, but is also coloured brightly and strongly. And with a volcano if you are not careful you can shake. All these sensations I wanted to put in this text because they tell me about what I feel now.”

Francesca, among the quirkiest and loveliest of all the singers we’ve met on wiwibloggs, channels her free-loving spirit into the music video, which sees her in a range of situations conveying emotions from carefree and fun to contemplative and tortured.

As she wanders the streets of Berlin she pauses to eat strawberries at a corner shop, dances outdoors, turns an esplanade into a runway all her own and downs beers with a friend. There’s a sense of connection but also isolation — no doubt reflecting her life as an artist.

The track will feature on Francesca’s third studio album, which is set to be released this fall.

Are you loving Francesca’s foray with tropical house? Do you hope the rest of the album is done in a similar style? Let us know in the comments box below!

Vulcano lyrics — Francesca Michielin

v
v
v come vulcano
e mille altre cose
come la volontà di camminare vicino al fuoco
e capire se è vero questo cuore che pulsa
se senti sul serio oppure è vanità
v come vulcano
e mille altre cose
come il volume che
si alza e contiene il mare
e capire se vale scottarsi davvero
o non fare sul serio
fare sul serio
corro di notte
i lampioni le stelle
c’è il bar dell’indiano
profuma di te
rido più forte
mi perdo nell’alba
sei in tutte le cose
e in tutte le cose
esplode
la vertigine che ho di te
la vertigine che ho di te
v come vulcano
e mille altre cose
la paura di
vagare per troppo tempo a vuoto
e capire se è vivo questo cuore che vibra
vuoi viaggiare davvero
viaggiare davvero
corro di notte
i lampioni le stelle
c’è il bar dell’indiano
profuma di te
rido più forte
mi perdo nell’alba
sei in tutte le cose
e in tutte le cose
esplode
la vertigine che ho di te
la vertigine che ho di te
mi sposto
mi fermo
il semaforo in centro
è già spento da un’ora
tu starai dormendo
è bello sentire anche qui
la vertigine che ho di te
corro di notte
i lampioni le stelle
c’è il bar dell’indiano
profuma di te
rido più forte
mi perdo nell’alba
sei in tutte le cose
e in tutte le cose
esplode
la vertigine che ho di te
la vertigine che ho di te
la vertigine che ho di te

I really like her new sound. I don’t know much about Italian music but from what I’ve heard in the past, her latest single is very different from other Italian songs.

Love her entry in 2016, Vulcano is pretty amazing as well. This girl has true talent.

Her best yet? Absolutely not. It’s completely generic and it’s just a way to get an easy hit. The Francesca we’re used to is more original and I’m sure her album will take a different direction from this song.

Disagree Polegend. Her other work is pretty boring. This is the first song that gives me life.

Have you not heard her song Tanto?

Not generic at all. My only issue is that it doesn’t translate to a new flavour, it’s different but somehow still the same.
In general, it’s a very good song, not her finest though.

Vulcano is an amazing song and I really like the style of it because it’s kinda same as Di20are’s and I love Di20are ? I’ve been waiting for her album/new songs since last December! And as her long time fan I wait them even more

I like this new direction, breaking from the standard Italian pop. Can’t wait for the new album later this year. Perhaps she’ll do Samremo again.

We can only hope. I wish to see a more diverse collection of songs in the festival next year.

As far as her entire body of work goes, Francesca is definitely my favorite Eurovision 2016 artist.

I think it’s better than the ESC song. She has better songs than her entry. Very sexy girl 😉

Loved Francesca last year – my favourite as was Francesco this year. What great artists, not helped by the Eurovision staging.
