It’s been 43 years since Benny Andersson and his fellow ABBA companions took the Eurovision Song Contest by storm with their iconic song “Waterloo”, which sowed the seeds of a global pop phenomenon. Following their Eurovision success, the quartet produced an endless string of hits in the 70s until they decided to part ways in 1982. Sad face.

Thankfully Benny Andersson has gone into ABBA mode again. According to Expressen, the 70-year-old composer and songwriter has been back in the sound studio making piano recordings and new interpretations of a number of ABBA’s greatest hits for his upcoming solo album.

The album, titled “Benny Andersson – Piano”, is to be released in the autumn by the German record label “Deutsche Grammophon” and reportedly contains no less than 22 tracks from Benny’s long career. Naturally it includes songs from the ABBA period, but also from his and Björn Ulvaeus’ hit musicals “Chess” and “Kristina från Duvemåla”.

Precisely which ABBA hits Benny has chosen to re-record still remains uncertain, so diehard ABBA fans will be kept in suspense a bit longer. However, according to Expressen, the classic “Thank you for the music” is one of the tracks on the album.

It is going to be interesting to listen to ABBA’s songs in a new format. Many know the songs by heart, and these stripped back numbers — Benny and a piano — mark a new adventure. Hopefully, the album will include the ABBA ballads “Chiquitita”, “I Have a Dream” and “The Winner Takes It All”, but also upbeat tracks like “Dancing Queen” and “Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)”.

Those are the songs that I want, but what songs do you want? Are you excited that Benny is dropping a new album? Let us now in the comments box below!

” the quartet produced an endless string of hits in the 70s until they decided to part ways in 1982.”

This sentence makes no sense!

I really love ABBA, but this seems like a quite simple way of making some extra cash. Why doesn’t he compose some original instrumentals?

He does compose original instrumentals, many of them. See his BAO albums.

I doubt he needs extra cash.

“Arrival” and “Intermezzo No. 1” would be great to hear in an updated style of today’s format.
